DFRPG / Re: Focus or Enchanted or... Oh my!

You could also combine option one and two through alchemy. You create potions that have holy water or other catch satisfying ingredients in them. So a destructive potion with iron as one of the ingredients would satisfy the catch of a faerie.

Every additional sponsor would have to be paid for sepperately.

DFRPG / Foci for thematic ritualists
« on: February 17, 2011, 04:57:13 AM »
Does a thematic ritualist like a diabolist just use a foci for diabolism or do they have to take foci for each individual type of diabolical thaumaturgy? In other words would I have a foci of diabolism control +1, or would I have to take diabolsm wards control +1, and redo that for each of the diabolism abilities?

You can use thaumaturgy to give yourself aspects, three shifts for a fragile aspect more shifts to get the fragile aspect to stick around longer. So is it possible to give yourself a lot of fragile aspects that enhance thaumaturgy then use your free tags to create spells with a large complexity and safely power them up very quickly?

I think that they would be responsible to both Marcone and the White council. Just like Miss Gard has responcibilities to both Marcone and The Monoc corporations leader(two different freeholding lords).

DFRPG / Ritualists and enchanted objects

Can a ritualist create an enchanted object that has an evocation effect within their theme? For example in the Baltimore chapter there is a character with ritual aquamancy, could he create a enchanted object with a water magic evocation?

I always thought that battle mages relied on enchanted objects for extra spells. Which is why Harry made all those extra force rings after he beacame a warden, he had three on each finger so that is a total of 24 extra atack spells with zero stress. I am sure that most of the wardens have their favorite battle spells enchanted into magical objects to give them more combat power.

It has bean a few years sinse I last read Fool Moon, but if I remember correctly it mentions that a lycanthrope possessed by its spirit of rage is not protected by the first law. I would think that the same thing would go for demon possesion.

I disagree with your conclusion:
"Regardless, an item’s casting strength after all bonuses are totaled should never exceed two times the crafter’s Lore rating"

The rules for potions specifically say that unlike normal enchanted items they can be empowered further through the invocation of aspects.

You cna make potions that have the more powerfull thaumaturgic effects, under their description on ys.280, it says "Unlike a normal enchanted item, the effect strength of the potion may be boosted on the fly or at the time it is created with the invocation of aspects. each invocation allows the potions strength to be increased by 2." So a base strength of your lore, up to twice your lore from specializations, foci, or using multiple slots for the potion then adding two for each invocation of aspects, this would allow you to get a decent number of shifts in. You couldn't make a super ritual into a potion, but you should be able to make most of the more commonly used thaumaturgical effects as potions. In the sidebar Bob is talking about making a major entropy curse potion.

I think you have to have a power that gives you a different skill set in your alternate form. This is one of the things that beast form does, you don't just get two skill blocks for free.

I just got done reading a book called Frost Moon, in this book the main character has tattoos of crosses on each finger of her hand so that she can punch vampires with a holy object. Would such a tactic work in dfrpg.

DFRPG / Refinement for non human spellcasters
« on: July 17, 2010, 07:51:59 PM »
Are people who gain their spellcasting abilities from non human blood still limited in refinement like a human spellcaster? For example, the scion of a fire god has chanelling(fire), it makes sense that he would never have non fire spellcasting but it doesn't make sense that they would never be able to gain refinement for their fire spellcasting.

I would think that telepathy would be covered under supernatural senses. The real problem with telepathy is that it violates the laws of magic, so if you use it the wardens will try to kill you.

DFRPG / Re: Hedge Witch/Wizard Template
« on: June 25, 2010, 09:43:38 PM »
The hedge witch/wizard as they are now seams to me to simply be a sorceror without evocation. They have 1 level of refinement just like a sorceror, they can have the sight, though it is not a requirement, just like a sorceror, they are a sorceror. Now if you wanted to make a hedge wizard that could gain thaumaturgic refinements like a wizard, but at the cost of never being able to use evocation, unless they gain a sponsor of course, that would be more interesting to me.
