Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Magic wood(spoilers)
« on: December 04, 2015, 01:57:00 PM »
I personally don't think the wood is magic, just that being organic its a good container for souls.  However, I think its a mistake to equate that the library soul, and the soul of the Predator are the same thing.  Books, as described contain pieces of soul, ending up with a conglomerate soul, of sorts.  The soul of the Predator, is an entirely new soul, and it isn't just the wood, but it's crystals are part of it.

Hence, why Folly was only able to hear the Predator once it had a new set of crystals installed.

How exactly do they get metal for their needs? Trees I can understand can be harvested even if the process is risky, but how can they ever mine in safety. The surface is mist covered and dangerous, so how would they find new mines to suit their needs. Can mines be run for centuries without playing out.

I think that's answered in Grimm's discussion of what to do with the crew of the Auroran vessel.  I forget what they were called (base of the Spire?), but Grimm strongly advocated that the crew not be sent to what I assumed were the mines.  I might be wrong on my assumption, but it at least seemed likely from my reading.

Quantus, you assume that the 7/8 miles starts from the surface.  However, in my reading it was from their current altitude.  Not sure which of us is correct, but it's something to consider.

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Like and like not (major spoilers)

I thought the growing madness was a very gradual thing in general for etherealists.  We did also see Folly nearly pass out after the lightning show with the silkweaver horde.  I'd imagine there's a personal cost to channeling large amounts of energy into crystals.

Since we've only seen Folly collapse, I'm not certain to take that reaction as a given.  Consider in the Alex Verus series, apprentices can get winded, but trained Mages have a nearly unlimited ability to call upon their magic.

Since we haven't seen the limits of Cavendish or Ferus, it could be the same here.

In the Alex Verus series, it's only Mage on Mage action for the most part.  However, since Ethrealists have limited numbers, I'd like to see a bit more limitation on their power.

I pretty much liked everything, except a few things:

I really didn't like that Bridget's second kidnapping happened without a fuss.  I'd like to have seen something of a fight.  It just felt so very unsatisfying.

We know Etherealists progressively grow more mad as they work with the powers.  However, in the context of the book, the characters seem to remain at a static level of madness.

I somewhat feel this gives the Etherealists a bit too much power & wouldn't have minded that grand displays of power would be followed by either a temporary increase in madness, or some other drawback.

I mean, I don't see anything from stopping Lady Cavendish from pointing at every one of her enemies & getting people to claw their eyes out, just like Oprah handed out cars.

Gaunlet's overheat, but what stops an Ethrealist from just going overboard?  We really were never shown.

Those are my two major issues.  One I hope sees some self correction as the series goes on, the other is just a minor quibble.

I'd guess it has to do with her crystals & her Master's collection.  I'll bet that the Cavendish lost a great deal of whatever held her sanity together.  When Folly's Master (sorry can't remember his name currently & using my phone) last saw Cavendish, she must have been so far gone that he assumed she would certainly die, she might have also been aboard a ship crashing to the surface.

The Enemy came to her in that state & was able to fill her mental gap with its own will.  The Enemy just assumed it could control Folly because she is likewise an Ethrealist like Cavendish.

I think there's a line or two, that suggests that Bridget's family is new to meat production, but that doesn't necessarily mean a new vat.

I pretty much agree with your assessment.  Additionally, I'd point out that there is support for excessive oxygen & strong electromagnetic energies.

Remember, people no longer live on the surface, but in high altitudes where oxygen should be thinner.  However, everyone seems to be relatively fine.  So maybe, one of the reasons why people have left the surface, is because there's just too much of an abundance of oxygen down at the surface.

Also, the crystals seem more of a focus/battery for etheric energies, from my perspective.  They basically pull energies from the air, and convert them to energy that can be used.  So that's a point for strong electromagnetics.

Just my two cents.

I agree.  I'm glad I got it, and it well compliments the text.  The voice acting is perfect, and appropriately British.

I want to say it's a play on habitat.  That's what I assumed in my reading of my own ARC.

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Non-spoiler review of TAW
« on: August 02, 2015, 10:27:44 PM »
So hey, got an advanced reader copy of CS: TAW at SDCC, and I've recently finished it (and mostly gotten over my post-flight migraines).  So I figured I'd give you guys something of a review, sans significant details.  (I'll at least try to talk in the general, but you should be warned that I can't promise that I won't let something slip.  You have been warned.)

First off, the book starts off a tad slow, but starts to get you hooked about 4 chapters in.  The problem is, this being a new series, it takes time for you to feel any emotional interest in what happens at first.  Plus, this book doesn't jump you straight into the action, and begins a tad on the mundane side.  Personally, I think the book might have benefited from picking another perspective as a starting point.

(click to show/hide)

Still if you stick around long enough, the tedium quickly evaporates & you'll be committed to the long term.

Speaking of which, the general flow of the book is great.  While the book is presented from a multi narrative perspective, you aren't left hanging waiting for each story to resolve.  The narratives really flow well into each other, and there isn't a sense of individual story behind each chapter.  (Oh, and it isn't in a journal style, so that helps.)

I won't say that I'm nearly invested into this series, as I am the Dresden Files, but I liked it significantly more than the Codex Alera books.  I can't say that there isn't any minor quibbles or complaints I might have, but generally nothing worth mention.

The book did a fairly decent job of presenting a interesting new world & a story to go along with it.  If you are willing to give it a chance, I think you'll be pleased with your reading.

So I was at SDCC 2015 & if you followed the @acerocbooks Twitter, you had a chance to pick up an advanced reader copy of The Aeronaut's Windlass.  I didn't sign any non-disclosure agreement, but I'm sure I could say something here that might be frowned upon.

I've already said some things, but a bit belatedly I thought it might be useful to ask if there are things that I need to avoid talking about.  Thus far, I've mentioned how many distinct voices the book has, and I wrote a post that has the details of the marketing campaign (listed on the book's back) where other ARCs will be released.  I also wouldn't mind attaching copies of the front/back cover of my ARC.

I don't plan to talk too much spoiler info & will try to talk in general, but it'd be helpful to know if there's anything I should avoid saying.

Additionally, at SDCC there was a flyer that had the complete prologue & first chapter of Cinder Spires: TAW available.  I'm sure Penguin might okay putting those up on the website, if requested.  I mean, yes there's a little bit of chapter 2 up, but its a bit out of context, and the prologue & chapter 1 would help.
