Author Craft / Re: My First Short Short Story....
« on: November 22, 2009, 09:24:47 PM »
Gritti, i really liked it. Lately i have been transitioning from reading books whoms setting is in the past, to the present based ones. I liked the story, and, if elaborated upon, it could be a moving story of a man's change of nature. Whether or not this was the intended affect, you had me hooked.

I'm not sure if you wanted feeback such as puntucal errors and such, but i didn't find any. Do you plan on making a 50,000+ word short story of this and publishihng it?

Dear lord i need to become more frequent on this site. i'm gone for a month and BOOM! 10 more posts. I dont have much to say, except for i'm filling up my folders with ideas for future books, but school takes up so much time that all i can do is fantasize on my breaks. i may have something more fruitful to say in the future, but, Miss Witch, your idea sounds amazing and i LOVE to write about magic, sorcery, and all that cool stuff. throw a question out and i'll reply. hopefully with something useful.

Adios.

Author Craft / Removing a few chapters.
« on: October 06, 2009, 03:25:58 AM »
Is it really necessary? while every situatoin is different, my original chapters dont seem to fit the plot of my book. Whether or not i should do this is like deciding between which vowel to drop off the english alphabet. i know that i could write a few chapters, mix the ones that do and dont fit until it matches up just right, but that takes so much time just to think of a few new scenes that were never even thought of as a necessity for existing. ARRRRG.

Also, its just that my writing style now differs so much than it did a year ago that i can't quite convert it.

Anybody else have these problems? Its just such a hard decision.

Treat myself to a nice walk/bike/slow jog around my scenic small town. theres this little hill we call "Hamburger Hill" and it is the highest point in the city. if you look at a certain spot you can see the whole city. You can only see trees, for the most part, even though its mostly houses beneath them.

*Relaxed sigh* Its inspirational.

Or i just do homework because i'm in highschool and thats what i was supposed to be doing in the first place.

I can't remember what the website was called, but i was watching this show on the science channel that went over the two moons, phobos and demos. "If Mars had liquid water" or somethign like that.

It was a crazy episode with all different types of weather patterns being theorized and all that cool stuff.

this doesn't really help you, but you get the idea. the idea has been worked before and you CAN find information on it.  8)

I also fall into the catagory that finds 1st POV easier.  I think because my stories come from my characters, in my case.

At writer's workshops with 'real' writers (not hobby duffs like me) though, they have a huge marked preference for 3rd in all it's various forms.  There were editors at houses that said, "never send me a 1st". I take that as a bit of snobbery and filed it as unimportant.  I'm not writing Tolstoy.

Whoah whoah whoah whoah!
Hold up!
Never send me a 1st. i haven't even gotten past that before my world went concave. thats ridiculous. i write in first. i hope editors don't really mind 1st...I'll continue reading what you wrote.

Reading.

Hmm. now theres some advice i never see. most books started never get finished. I suppose i'll have to oppose this law of writers.
Heheheheheee, motorvation.

I also give kudos to Belial. as a newly starting writer I have only experienced this burn once. it lasted my whole summer break(i'm still in highschool :-\). all of that free time wasted in front of a computer screen destroying my eyesight in an "I'm not gonna blink until i can push out a page" type of staredown with a monitor. Then, once the stress of the oncoming school year crushed me it came back. at the exact time when i'm not motivated to write, just sleep and hope i wake up as a fish or something. If only i had know about the "Outline Your Chapters" trick. i started that at the beginning of school and it has helped me bulldoze over the beginning signs of writers block. Well, i hope this (auto)biography gave you any insight into the ignorantly oblivious(Does that even work??) teenager.

Back to my point. Congrats to anybody that defeated this plague. just remember, you are a crystal hammer and the block is a brick wall. you'll get through it...eventually.

Author Craft / Re: Someone please use this? _____ anyone else?

Yeah, i just had thought of one today.

A spider mutates into a half mouse in the shape of a kid, spider, and mouse, and tries to enroll in human schools. It promtly gets beaten to death. the president of the united states gives "It" a memorial, as it wasn't a sentient being long enough to give itself a name, and is buried under Fort Knox(Which i believe is where all of the treasury of the U.S. is held.) Uneventful end and no sequels. thats a bestseller... ;)

Anyone else?

Ahh, for those people who have read the original post i digress.

The wind on fire trilogy by author William Nicholson.
Although i started this to talk about the endings, his is a rather good idea. The author puts much detail into the surroundings, and in the second book he even writes about a few months or years where the main character was in a slave pin and if anyone had tried to escape they would kill a family member. or a whole family. There was so much potential for a climax that was all about war and intense fighting but, if i remember correctly, he didn't even write about it at all.
But, there were a lot of people who like the style. i just couldn't get into it...even though i willed myself to read through the whole series.
But this was a couple years ago.

My point is that the author put so much time into detail and great archetypes for the story that he forgot to make it interesting.

If any of you have read the Fall of Farsala Trilogy you'd know what i mean when i say that Hilari Bell knows how to moderate.

Action, lack of it, detail, humor, dialogue, and most of all an enthralling story that seems completely possible. I may be praising her too much but I know i could learn a few things from her.

Except for one thing. For all of her cool font styles and font size she DOUBLE SPACED! The heathen!  8)

With the most uneventful ending you have ever read?

For me it was every book in the Wind On Fire Trilogy.

...This isn't a hate thread or anything, i just want to know if they have anything in common so future authors who view this thread don't make the same mistakes.

But i cant remember the ending to those books. just that it was extremely anticlimactic.

This thread was inspired by the movie The Forbidden Warrior.

Awesome. Is this after the 2012 incident? because that would be the safest place to find haven if it does happen...

Or have we evolved to a level 1 civilization? Have we finally found out how to travel to jupiter in less than 2 days? i think it takes years right now, but i know it definitely takes four months to get to mars if you slingshot around venus, then venus again(second revolution around the sun), and then earth.

Science Channel don't fail me now...

Seconded. aside from my self-absorbtion...

Gritti, i thought it was pretty cool. also amusing "Thats another point for me, doc" i liked that.

A five by five foot cell? what country does this guy live in? thats a pretty vile thing to do to a guy. aside from that i thought it was cool. keep writing  :D

Alright, heres the first piece of a new book i'm starting to work on. Hope it catches your interest.

-----------------------
A bright spinning multi-hued flash of light. A hard something charged out to hit my head and then snapped. While I’m falling towards the ground at an awkward angle, I notice that sunlight is skimming the tops of the trees as a few small birds pass overhead. Then a rough but oddly soft surface rushed up to catch my back and another hard something hit me in the back of the head.
Then blackness.
I jolted up, becoming dizzy, then let myself fall back down. There are birds chirping, and the sound woke me up from my half sleep. I open my eyes and realized I’m in a forested area. It smells like spring, but the weather is still cold. The sun had risen enough that I can see it though the leaves. Head aching, I stood up to look around and drink in my surroundings.
I’d taken the time to think about it and I  surmised that I was in a forest but I didn’t know which one. The trees surrounding me are a mans width and five times as tall. I looked down to where I had landed and saw that I was standing on top of a flowered bush with a rock in the spot where my head had landed.
Around me I heard hushed footsteps then lifted my arm and opened my mouth to beckon them towards me, hoping to ask where I was. As I came to a realization I shut my mouth before my breath can make it there.
I’m in a forest, I told myself. I have to be cautious, dangerous animals could be living in this forest.
I quietly moved a for a few minutes, roughly circling the spot where I had awaken to get my blood flowing. I tried to remember how I got here, but I couldn‘t. I could barely remember anything past the bright flash of light, and this scared me. My heart rate started accelerating.
I could remember the basic stuff though, so I guess that comes as little consolation. For example, I knew that the something that had rushed out to hit my head was a branch. I had stopped walking, realizing that I didn’t hurt at all. I lifted up my arms to look at them, checking if they were cut or bruised from the fall, but they didn’t look like normal human hands.
They were prosthetic.
But I don’t remember what put them on my arms, nor did I know the necessity for the replacement. I examined them closely and found that they were strangely unique.
My hands…In my right palm was an inset sphere that glows with physically clashing edged strands of black and yellow that resemble electricity. Extending away from the sphere, but still connected to it, are glowing, pulsating blue strips that–are one-fourth of a centimeter in width–reach all the way down my fingers to the tips, and there they expand into a circle that is three-fourths of a centimeter in diameter. My left hand is the same way, except for the fact that the sphere and glowing blue strips are on the back of my left hand, rather than on the palm, and in the sphere, rather than black and yellow electricity, is a dull shade of purple.
Hmm, electricity, I thought.
I started forward again, walked into the shade of the trees in front of me and spotted a mound of dirt, cleared of any shrubbery to my right. I stared at it, concentrating.
I continue gazing at the mound, and I lifted my arm up, outstretched at shest level and in a controlled movement I napped my thumb and middle finger of my right hand together, creating sparks.
As I predicted, a thin and relatively weak bolt of lightning struck the dirt, solidifying the topmost patch into a glass-like substance.
I jumped back despite my prediction, and tripped over an above-ground root. I patted my hand on my leg, thinking it was going to catch fire. I stood up and took a quick glance at the glass-like dirt.
Scared of myself, I fled the area, trying to reach the end of the forest. After a few minutes of frightened running, I reached the brink and what happened next seemed completely impossible. What happened next blew my mind completely.
I was in a desert. I looked to my right and my left and there was nothing but sand except for the forested area behind, and when I focused, I could see the end of it to either side of me.

Sorry for going over the directed word count every time. I hope it was worth it.
