DFRPG / Re: The Dresden Files RPG Book Quote Scavenger Hunt
« on: February 26, 2007, 06:57:21 AM »
Here's an early one from Blood Rites:
Weapons (weaponed combat, swordplay, thrown weaponry, weapon knowledge)

"As I watched, one of them reached down between its crooked legs and . . . Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but it gathered up the kind of ammunition primates in zoos traditionally rely upon. The monkey-demon hurled it with a chittering scream, and it combusted on its way to me. I had to duck before the noxious ball of incendiary goop smacked into my nose."

Here's an early one from Proven Guilty:
Driving (driving, flying, boating, car chases, shortcuts, street navigation)

"Stars swarmed over my vision and I tried to swat them away so that I could get a look at the Chrysler's plates--but it was gone in a heartbeat. Or at least I think it was. Truth be told, my head was spinning so much that the car could have been doing interpretive dance in a lilac tutu and I might not have noticed."

EDIT: Ooo... and one from Dead Beat.Handy, if you don't want to say your real name:

Deceit (Falsehood, deception, distraction, misdirection)
"Who," said the man, his accent thick and British, "are you?"
"The Great Pumpkin," I responded. "I've risen from the pumpkin patch a bit early because Butters is just that nifty. And you are?"

Author Craft / Re: Ideas for town names?
« on: February 23, 2007, 04:22:16 AM »
Base your town names on the culture surronding your area, prominently on the language used by the people there. I agree that it's easiest to name towns after prominent person or a local landmark. You can base it on a history and you don't have to be so serious about it. I mean, look where I live, Kuala Lumpur, the internationally known heart-centre of Malaysia (shopping, eating, business, foreign-exchange, telecommunications, satellite broadcast, etc).

It literary means Capital Mud.

...FYI, Capital Mud was so-called because of the rich tin mining places around the outskirts back in the old days. It requires lots water to erode the hills. ;)

Author Craft / Re: Planning battle scenes
« on: February 23, 2007, 02:38:20 AM »
Actually, that's not a bad idea. I have a set at home which I would lay a National Geographic atlas map on the floor and I place them according to the wars of the 19th century (no really, I'm alone and nerdy enough to do it). It helps me define the strategies used based on the weaponary at the time. I get most of my info from Wikipedia and other online stuff. Once I figured out how wars works back then, I'll move on to fighter jets and espionage. Must say that my fav would be the Crimean War of 1857 ;D.

I'm going to be very honest and say <100 :(

I'm still working on background stories, history, societies, etc, and almost all of it from scratch. The thing about making your own world is that I won't have to look up too much background material to make it realistic. The downside is that it takes a really long time to get all these ideas into an accurate timeline. Which there were more hours in a day...

What, you haven't read White Night yet?  Man, did you fall for the whole "April" ruse hook, line, and sinker!  I guess I shouldn't tell you that Murphy dies... :D

Aww... c'mon. I haven't lost it so much that I'd sink all way to that. ;D Just to be on the safe spot, I'm keeping track at my local Borders. Just wish the sample chapter was online already...

I wish it was.  ;D

Me too.

:blink blink:
Well it better be April, cos I don't want to have to wait that long only to find out that it all was JUST SOME FREAKING APRIL FOOL!!!  >:( :P

Author Craft / Re: How powerful should a protagionist be?
« on: February 08, 2007, 02:27:38 AM »
It is essentially the protagonist's story you're writing about and thus, he/she must have certain issues that the reader could relate to. Such as taking the bus or driving the car to work or take on the bad guys in a battlefield or sneak into the fortress. It's the choices the protagonist makes, rather than the best of his abilities (indeed maybe the lack of his abilities) which makes a charcter who/what we can love and cheer to.

Oh gods and freaks, I think I subconciously quoted JKRowling's Dumbledore of COS :o.

But still, the system works. The character grows, he loses his abilities and makes different choices. You question what if he still had the power and then which way would it force him/her to do the best thing or the right thing.

Indeed, I plan to make my character with super-potential and super-strong but her choices restricts her from acheiving top level. Not to mention getting crippled socially, physically, magically and emotionally (in that order). But remember, what makes a book is the characters. Plural. There are others that would support my protagonist along the way, those she had helped before. They wouldn't want her to give up no matter how much she just wants to lay down and disappear.

So it doesn't matter how tough/weak your protagonist is. Preferably, the tougher he is, the more people needed to bing him down. He could be a god with phenomenal cosmic power but it still comes down to either sacrifice his family/friends so their pure blood can heal the planet or rescue them to a temporary heaven and risk bleeding reality to the demons. It's the walk that goes with the talk ;).

I love how it says "National Bestselling Author of White Night" despite the fact White Night isn't out yet. Hahaha

Yeah, the Sci-Fi dot bugs me. Mostly because I don't like the show.

Well, he's a national bestselling author, and he's author of White Night.  How is this inaccurate? :D

Cos the term "National Bestselling Author of White Night" gives the impression that White Night is already out and at the bestseller's list. For a second when I read the cover, I thought White Night was out early... :D

:groan:
I guess I'll have to experience standard Dresden withdrawal until then. I'll be under the security blanket in my room if anybody ask.
:suck thumb and wimper...: :P

Author Craft / Re: Why Do You Write?
« on: February 06, 2007, 01:37:33 AM »
Because no one else in my family approves of me writing fiction. I have no support whatsoever. They especially opposed to contemplating a future of me as a writer. Yeah, I'm a rebel :P.

Author Craft / Re: Writing Sequels
« on: December 25, 2006, 11:02:03 AM »
IMHO, sequels are the defining factor on your ability as a writer. You shouldn't put out a sequel just because you think you got the first one right and that you like the story enough to continue. Success or not, the first novel are mostly meant as introductory on your skills as a writer and imaginator. Sometime, sequels are the stuff that make or break your series so you have to be careful on your plot and structure. In the second time around, readers have an idea of who you are and have expectations. I would recommend if you're sure you can really do better the next time around.

With that said, I sincerely wish you the best of good luck as you've done more that I have... ;)

Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Personal Avatars???
« on: December 21, 2006, 08:45:26 AM »
Kiriath just posted with her own image, and she only has 39 posts.

No she didn't. Her avatar's in the Actors folder somewhere close to the top, called David Boreanaz. At least, it was there the last time I checked it.

Oh and yay, I got a personal avatar too :).
