DF Spoilers / Re: Warden of Demonreach: Dragoncon lore-dump or retcon??!?
« on: September 20, 2024, 01:00:26 AM »
Blundering into it doesn't make one automatically bad at whatever the job is, or a bad person.  I do agree talking to the inmates is dangerous, also the temptation of trying to harness the power in that apparently very powerful ley line.  However in the light of all of that, why didn't the Senior Council make sure there was a Warden in charge of the place they could trust?  After all they have a designated assassin don't they?  Someone authorized to use black magic for cripe sake! :o

I've always thought it strange that they don't have someone as the "sitting" Warden who was the Warden but knew never to go to the island but could sit on the Title. What if the fear is less about corruption and more about ability? We know the Warden can lock anyone or anything up and that the Warden can let it out with specific orders/under his control. Maybe the Senior Council (and other parties) are afraid of someone taking the Wardenship then putting their cronies in a cell and releasing them as his puppets.

Take the Senior Council, they know the island is a threat and so has Eb take up as Warden. Ten years later The Merlin tries to kill Harry, Eb to protect Harry puts The Merlin in prison, then releases him with the order to not kill Harry. The Merlin becomes the puppet of Eb, so Eb basically controls the council. I wonder if this is the true fear of the SC that someone could infect their minds and control them. We saw how much Peabody could get done with his ink and I'd assume Deamonreach is more powerful than ink.

Obviously, the big issue with this is the geographical location of the island which is why I have speculated before there must be a way to expand the range or something to be able to cast a wider net. But there is no evidence I am aware of supporting this potential.

DF Spoilers / Re: Who wanted the Fomor to rise?
« on: September 06, 2024, 04:33:17 PM »
???
I don't recall this event; pointer/linkie/cite, please, so I can go re-read?
The quote comes from Bombshells:
Quote
“The one I made for the Red Court in the Congo was deadly enough,” Lord Froggy said, a smug tone in his voice.

My heart pounded even harder. During its war with the White Council, the Red Court had used some kind of nerve gas on a hospital tending wounded wizards. The weapon had killed tens of thousands of people in a city far smaller and less crowded than Chicago.”

My apologies for referencing the wrong city in my OP (didn't have the books close at the moment) but my point stands that there was a link between the Fomor and the RC.

Don't forget that it is the Fomor who created the chemical weapon that took out 1/3rd of the Wardens in Cairo(?).

While the RC was old the Fomor is ancient they know how to play the game as well as the pros (Mab, One Eye, Mr. Sunshine). I wouldn't be surprised if the Big Bads of the world consider all of the "old" players as children. I have no evidence of this besides Eb saying to Harry in BG something to the effect of "This isn't everyone, not nearly everyone" to Harry saying that the battle of Chicago had all the big hitters. This leads me to believe that there are many more civilizations out there that we haven't seen. Maybe some/most of them are sleeping or are hidden deep in the Never Never but they are out there. If this is accurate then the big players we have seen are just a fraction of the players that make up the whole. My point by all this is that maybe the Fomor and other ancient civilizations are the true 3D chess players while the old and the new civilizations are just pawns. Like Palpatine using Darth Maul or Ventris for his own gains and then disposing of them. The point of the series is to lead up to the BAT for this to occur we need to have villains that are more than blood junkies or ego maniacs we will begin to see the string pullers in the next few books. Every few books the stakes get higher, we go from Harry the small-time detective, to Harry the (WC) warden, to Harry the Vampire Slayer, to Harry the Winter Knight. We are now in Harry the Wizard of Chicago era and I think the string pullers are just beginning to take note of this new power.

DF Spoilers / Re: Molly Sending a Hidden Message?
« on: July 31, 2024, 01:51:17 AM »
I'd like to think it is a hidden message but honestly, I don't see it. Primarily because Harry is too dumb to understand it. Harry is a smart guy but is clueless until he needs to be. I think the easier answer to this song choice would be that Chicago is known as the Concrete Jungle, and Winter are predators. So the song choice says welcome to this jungle where we are the hunters and you are our prey. This is our territory and you are out of your depth.

DF Spoilers / Re: Gatekeeper
« on: February 27, 2024, 12:35:12 AM »
How long has Rashid been the Gatekeeper and who did he replace?

I'd say there is a chance (although a small one) that Rashid has been the Gatekeeper since the faeries took over control of the Gates. I say a small chance because that would make Rashid VERY old and while I agree he is the oldest wizard we know of he may not be that old. Secondly, Mab has both respect and trust in Rashid, this would have taken time to build up. Mab wouldn't trust just anyone as the Gatekeeper I'd bet Rashid did something (probably many things) to build up trust. As for previous Gatekeepers, I'd say anyone from mythology with special vision (one eye or otherwise notable vision) for this reason I'd guess Heimdall.

DF Spoilers / The Mother's Cottage
« on: January 07, 2024, 02:59:42 AM »
During a recent reread of Summer Knight, I noticed a strange detail that Harry pointed out about the Mother's Cottage. It had a Snowflake on the front door. This cottage is where both of the Mother's live so why is there a snowflake on the door? This is a small detail, but I find it interesting. Maybe Mother Summer once lived in a different house? If so why did she move?

DF Spoilers / Did Butters break the Laws of Magic?
« on: September 15, 2023, 03:02:36 AM »
I am rereading Summer Knight and came to the part where the Mind Fog was released into the supermarket and Harry calls the Fog illegal. Now that reminded me of Skin Game where Butters had the globes of Mind Fog. Butters was using them against Binder's goons but I'd bet this wasn't the first time he used them. If so could Butters be in violation of the Laws of Magic?

DF Spoilers / Re: Why is Mab trying to change Harry?
« on: February 01, 2023, 12:45:12 AM »
Maybe Mab isn't trying to change Harry. Harry's defining characteristic is his Will, he has overcome dozens of foes that should have beaten him, but he is still around and doing his thing. Mab is forcing Harry to make hard choices and make sacrifices, all while knowing Harry is going to fight her every step of the way. Harry is a knight worth Mab's trouble because he won't cave to Mab's desires. In Cold Days(?) Harry says something to the effect of, "You can't afford a mediocre knight" sorry don't have the exact quote at hand. Most every knight before Harry has been a mindless thug (yes, there are exceptions but not many); Harry won't get to this point because of his Will. Harry Will's himself through big bad after big bad, not because he is the strongest or the smartest in every fight but because he believes it is right and those big bads need to be put down or because it was Right. By Mab pinning Harry into corners and making him make choices, she is sharpening his Will and focusing him on her enemies and on what she thinks needs to be done. Harry will and has gone along with this because he realizes that even though Mab is evil, she is the evil humanity needs. Harry will continue to face down Mab's foes because it is right, and he will come out on top because of his strength of Will, and it's what he needs to do to protect his family, friends, and world. A tangible example of this is when Harry describes "fighting" Mother Winter in CD as a grain of sand against an ocean; the grain of sand can be pushed around but will not break. Harry will not break, he may need to be strengthened and supported, but he won't break or bend that is what Mab needs.

Why do we presume Merlin or the Dragons created the ley line network around Demonreach? Maybe the network was not created by Merlin when he built the jail, maybe Merlin built the jail here BECAUSE the ley lines were here.

No, the Gatekeeper clearly states on page 385 of TC (soft cover)

Quote
"The ley line you speak of does not go through the island," he said. "This is where it wells up. The island is its source."

The Dragons or anyone else didn't create the ley line. The ley line is created by the combined magical energy of hundreds or thousands of powerful beings all in one place. The Dragons may have created other lines, but I think it is more likely every ley line comes from a place of great significance.

Besides Alfred’s limp comes from the Glacier which carved out Lake Michigan according to Jim/Harry, but according to science it was created 1.2 Billion years ago by the fissure of two tectonic plates

Where was this said? What WOJ or book talked about glaciers creating the limp? I don't know every WOJ but this is the first I'm hearing of this one and would enjoy hearing more about it.

DF Spoilers / Explanation behind Harry's ID?
« on: December 31, 2022, 04:47:10 PM »
In a reread of DB I came to the part where Harry was talking with his ID about the decision to release Lasciel for assistance, and Harry's ID described him as:

Quote
"I'm simply the more primal essence of yourself. The one most concerned with such matters as food. Survival." His dark eyes flickered idly over Lasciel. "Mating"

This reminded me of another Harry we meet in the future. Winter Knight Harry. Winter Knight Harry's priorities are very similar to ID Harry's priorities. Which brought me to my next question, where did the ID come from? The best answer I could come up with (admittedly, this is a stretch), but ID is the echo of himself that Harry creates when time traveling. We know that time travel is dangerous and when used at a large enough scale (CD attack on Demonreach), it creates ripples in time. We don't know of any other wizard with an ID, so it might be unique to Harry (no way of knowing for sure). If that is true, then we need to look at unique things that Harry has done, will do, or is. I don't think anything he has done (except maybe dying) that would create a second version of himself. If it was his death, I would imagine the ID would only appear after he is revived. We know per WOJ that Harry will break every law of magic, so my echo through time theory is possible. It could be a starborn thing, but I don't think that fits with what else we know about being starborn. It could also be the fulcrum/destroyer part of Harry, and the ID is what destroyer Harry will look like, and the ID is trying to "come out" sooner.

Again I know this is all a stretch but interested to hear your thoughts.

DF Spoilers / Re: How was “the Well” on Demonreach filled with inmates?
« on: December 31, 2022, 04:20:13 PM »
The last time this question was posed, I suggested and still wonder if Demonreach can move his essence along the ley line. So you could be halfway across the world and still sent a baddy to Demonreach. We saw in BG that you don't need to be on the island itself to be snared, so there must be at least some way the Demonreach is able to extend himself beyond the island.

DF Spoilers / Easy defense against the Eye
« on: December 26, 2022, 04:36:26 PM »
I got to thinking about magic circles, and my understanding of them is that a magic circle is a basic yet effective defense against any form of magic. I believe we have seen Butters use a defensive circle at least once in the series (sorry don't have books with me right now). It takes more complex circles to hold or bind entities, but a simple circle imbued with blood can block magic until a physical object breaks the "plane" of the circle. With that understanding, could a magic circle be used to block a direct shot from the Eye? In other words could Harry (or any other mortal wizard) simply use a circle to block the eye?

Haven't seen roman or Greeks. Lea is definitively Celtic, but have we seen any other named beings from the Tuatha? Their enemy fomorians have been seen. The Morrigan could be an interesting spice. And she's higher up the chain than Lea.

The Morrigan would be fun to see. But with the Morrigan being a triple goddess, there might be a greater connection to the founding of the Fairy Queen Mantles.

DF Spoilers / Re: Can Demonreach do this?
« on: December 06, 2022, 03:24:42 AM »
Could Fidelacchius kill the demon side but save the human side?

But to take this a step further, how would Thomas react if this was possible? For years now, he has been tormented by his demon, but it allows him to be an ally to Harry, do good for other people, serve in the Oblivian war, and protect his girlfriend. Yes, he probably hates his demon and the need to feed on people, but he very well could feel useless for being a vanilla mortal and need to relearn how to live.
