DF Spoilers / Re: Time for an Update
« on: June 02, 2021, 06:28:13 PM »
I haven't been following on here (the boards) as much lately, but it crossed my mind that I hadn't heard anything from/about Jim in quite awhile, and was going to post how much I missed the weekly Dresden drops we were spoiled with last year.  Hopefully all this quiet is a good sign that whatever he's working on is progressing nicely!

DF Spoilers / Re: The Next Book's Title

I agree this is fantastic.  There is so much aftermath here and given that the next book was going to be Mirror Mirror it seemed like it was going to be difficult to touch on those topics very easily.  Hopefully if he's already got this in mind he's going to get it out soon after the next CinderSpires book

DF Spoilers / Re: Mab and Lara

hmmm...daughters.... or people with Fae links like Lily.... could Molly be a descendant of Mab? They refer to Mab as in the time of Hastings... Britain.... we know Charity's parents were wealthy, and that could be a Puritan sounding name... maybe Charity descended from a Mayflower family, old money.... maybe Boston Brahmin... so proper... with a magic strain running thru the blood lines that One Does Not Talk About.... Charity ran away from tat life, but not her blood...

We also know Michael's line goes back to royalty, so it's possible that Mab "meddled" on her father's side as well

Mab eyeballing Lara as a potential replacement makes a lot of sense, especially when you look at the functions of the mantles and why they operate that way.  My read on the situation is that the Lady mantle denies it's holder sex as a means of teaching control and responsibility and restraint.  Once they have learned to master that then they might be ready to be the next Mab/Titania.  But looking at the history and what Jim has said about each of the mantles, the higher you go the less likely there is change (I believe he said Mother Summer has changed once, and Mother Winter has never given up her post).  That tracks with what we know of Mab...she's been Mab for a thousand years, and the only Winter Ladies we know of are Maeve and Molly...there obviously were Winter Ladies before Maeve, so the question is whether they were actual daughters of Mab, and more importantly, were they discarded because they showed the same lack of restraint as Maeve?  I think the answer to that is a yes, and it also explains why Mab does not want her mantle to pass to Molly yet--she doesn't think she has the necessary control and restraint.  Lara then, having managed to gain control over her demon (at least as much as possible) presents an ideal alternative if something should happen to Mab, someone who has demonstrated restraint and control and can operate without passion if necessary.

DF Spoilers / Re: Will There Be A Power Struggle Among the Denarians Now?
« on: October 14, 2020, 11:29:50 PM »
I don' t think there is anything to compel Marcone or Namshiel to follow orders from Nic, nor do I think Nic would even bother trying.  My sense is that the Denarians that follow Nic do so because their Fallen have a similar mind to what Anduriel wants to accomplish.  From what we've seen of Namshiel, he has a different agenda.  Plus Marcone seems to have a similar obstinacy as Harry when it comes to letting someone bend him to it's will.  We're assuming Nic knows about Marcone because we're making the assumption that Nic/Anduriel for lack of a better word stalks the shadows of those he's interested in (Marcone would qualify for that, even before he took Nic down a few pegs).  I don't believe we know for certain that the Fallen have some sort of way of knowing when coins are taken up...it seems like generally Nic steals the coin, plants it on his intended target, then waits for the Fallen to come to him.

But renovating a castle has to be insanely expensive. How many people do you know who have experience building, maintaining, or repairing a castle? I'd expect that alone to make it expensive. The materials aren't going to be cheap either. Granted, Harry only has to fix the roof/ceiling in a single room, but maintenance is also going to be expensive. I've seen estimates ranging from 1 to 5 percent of the market price of the castle.

I feel like the answer here is Svartelves.  They'd know how to fortify it/rebuild it.  It seems like they don't know that Harry broke Thomas out (or that Thomas was even broken out), so you'd get the added bonus of Harry feeling guilty/awkward as they did the work and expressed gratitude for his role in saving the city.

DF Spoilers / Re: Who should Harry marry

Hmmm, eight books, well, we only have to wait sixteen to forty-eight years to find out how it all turns out...

Lol.  It will be interesting to see how his pace is now that he's got his own place again to write.  Also whether he alternates back and forth between Dresden and CS after the next CS book.  If he does that, he'd more or less wrap up CS in time to then focus on BAT.  At least prior to PT/BG he was pretty good for a book a year, so there's hope!

Shouldn't 23-25-be the BAT?

I wonder if Mirror Mirror is also the time traveling case as it seems like alternate dimensions pair well with time traveling.

We can probably pencil in Nicodemus for #20.  Speculation--#20 leaves him completely broken and he returns at the conclusion of the BAT (#25) to find redemption, bringing his and Michael Carpenter's story arch to a satisfying conclusion

DF Spoilers / Re: Why is Harry so Tall?
« on: October 08, 2020, 11:16:15 PM »
Intent: She was targeting his birthtime exactly by using a mix of slower-time and faster-time locations. Thomas was the dry run, hence his birthday on exactly Valentine's. By changing her subjective timeline relative to objective time, she could ensure Harry's birth at the optimum time to produce a starborn. Side effect: He's tall.

I like this.  Also because it would indicate his mother's mastery of The Ways wasn't limited to just physical utility but also temporal.

Kind of makes you think Malcolm isn't Harry's biological father...All sorts of questions how Margaret would wind up with Malcolm given the crowds she frequented.  I think most likely situation is either Malcolm entered the picture as a convenient dupe and either didn't know (or didn't care) that Harry wasn't his OR he entered the picture right as/after Harry was born and took him in.  We've seen enough of his nature that either is possible.  And in no way does that diminish the impact he had on Harry.  Even if he's not biologically his, he inherited his good nature.

WAG--Erlking is his father.  There's something interesting about how the Erlking is described (asymmetrical face but ruggedly handsome) that kind of lines up with Harry not being your prototypical Hollywood leading man but still does well for himself in terms of getting women attracted to him.  Then you also have the multiple times they have encountered each other and the Erlking respecting Harry despite the circumstances.  And also Mab's hints that Harry could be immortal.  Now go and pick this guess apart!

Question to ponder...if the wedding happens and Harry takes his vows as the Winter Knight (and I would assume he would given it's political wedding)...how will the obligations as a spouse interplay with his obligations (and urges/desires) as the Winter Knight?

That's what those diamonds are for.
I think the question is whether Harry splurges on nice stuff or if he falls back into what's familiar and furnishes the castle via Goodwill :)[/list]

I think that also was the signing of the contract. He won't need to sign again because the contract is still valid, even when the Queen changes.

I would agree, the contract is with Mab (the mantle) not Mab (the individual wearing the mantle)

I think the operative thing here is that she doesn't expressly indicate that it's a command to Harry.  It's her last command, which would generally go out to all of Winter (ie she's telling the Redcap or Lea or whoever has opportunity).  In true Winter-fashion she realizes that Harry would have the highest chance of success...because he's the one person in Winter Molly would let her guard down for and be susceptible to treachery.  The phrasing here is key in that she suggests he would be wise to fulfill it, but it's clear he, as the Winter Knight, is not ordered to do so.

DF Spoilers / Re: Mac [Battle Ground Spoilers]
« on: October 05, 2020, 08:18:21 PM »
You don't think they're going to use the castle as their safe haven?  The Paranet was already using it as of Ghost Story, with Marcone letting Butters live there, and others come and go with a nursery and everything.

I could see where it might be a target, and he wouldn't want to jeopardize civilians during a battle.  But he already took civilians in during a battle.

I think they will use the Castle as a safe haven as well, but I think there's a couple of reasons it will stay with Mac: 1) logistically it makes sense to not put all your eggs in one basket (ie overpower the Castle with the placard on top of it's already formidable defenses).  Additionally, you'd have to transfer the placard over to Harry, and Harry already has enough targets on his back, he's not really the best person (at least in the perspective of those living in the Dresden-verse).  Mac on the other hand isn't the high profile target Harry is, and he also has the benefit of giving the Paranet an alternative if the Castle is compromised;  2) from a literary standpoint, it's sort of a Chekhov's gun with Mac sealing the protection with his blood.  True, that could have just been Jim's way of showing us what Mac really is, and there's nothing more to it, but I think ultimately this is setting the stage for the end-game and we'll see Mac and the placard come into play.

Just my thoughts anyway :)
