DF Spoilers / Re: What if its not Thomas
« on: July 16, 2020, 06:17:27 PM »
I think it was strange everyone just automatically assumed it was him.  Everyone also assumed immediately that Justine was being pressured so Thomas could do the assassination.  These are the immediate assumptions that have no basis in the story at all.  I would also point out that the Fomor have no reason at all to have caused this assassination.  The Fomor are about to kick off a war where their empress does not care if there is any infighting among the Accords.  So they have no reason to try to cause infighting.  The war is going to happen anyway.

I have seen the idea that Eb might have messed with Thomas' mind to cause the assassination since he hates White Court and did not seem impressed with the Dwarves either.  This explanation would at least give every character clear motives.

The conjureittis seemed... pointless.  Its just used for jokes.  And we already know wizards don't come into their powers until teenagers.  But they can also have this magical disease as children?  That doesn't even make sense.  Plus conjuring things seems really powerful, but it is a child's disease?  I hope there is some payoff for this because I just don't see it.  Bob appearing to explain this would have worked perfectly since Harry went to Butters' house where Bob stays.  Yet no Bob.  Easy fix.  But Butcher didn't want to explain it, so Bob doesn't appear.  Same with the Starborn thing.  It felt like Butcher was intentionally hiding it instead of characters' own choices.

So.  This was a good read to me.  But it was obviously very incomplete.  There is little to no payoff on every subject raised throughout the book.  My suggestion is to only read this book once Battlegrounds comes out.  Here is my review of it.

Overall, I enjoyed the book.  I read it in a few hours, and it was a fun read.  Butcher still has talent after a 6 or so year break in Dresden. There were a lot of small problems however.  Butcher's 6 year writing span really shows through in places.  I think they probably should have just made 1 book as Butcher originally intended because this book is incomplete, and it needs the next one to payoff all that it has promised.  Good thing Battlegrounds is out in a few months.

DF Spoilers / Re: Why, Thomas, Why? (Peace Talks Spoilers)

I think this being, in anyway, a Fomor plot is shaky.  The Fomor have literally 0 reasons to care about infighting with the Accords Nations.  They are kicking off their war, and they don't care about what the other side is doing.  Thus there are no reasons for the Fomor to be behind Justine's or Thomas' actions.

Eb using some black magic on the other hand to force Thomas is an interesting theory. This would cause Harry to lose any trust he has in Eb.  Plus it would suit Eb's plans.  He hates the White Court.  Them being destroyed or very hurt in a war would very much please him.  Though you have to ask the question of why are the feds watching Justine?  They shouldn't even have her on their radar.  So maybe its something else to do with the government.  That whole plotline makes no sense because no one really benefits from it.  And I don't see it being resolved very well in Battlegrounds because that book will take place during 1 day if not just the night.  Thomas will still be locked up for most if not all the book.  All the signs are pointing to Justine causing the assassination, but yet again we are left with no reasons or even any clues about a possible reason why this would happen.  I just hope we get payoff otherwise it will be a stupid plotline that went nowhere and has no relevance.
