DF Spoilers / Re: Some thoughts on Stormfront
« on: October 03, 2019, 02:33:23 PM »
That's one tangle of plotlines I can't quite understand - Bianca was extremely shirty about her employee being killed (by someone who was nemfected), but seemed to be complicit with Cowl later on.

Depending on how grim things get, I could imagine The Archive "ending" before it can be passed on. Though, that's if Jim goes the China Mieville writing Perdido Street Station route of torturing every character you care about.

DF Spoilers / Re: WAG: why Nicodemus wanted the knife
« on: September 05, 2019, 12:47:33 PM »
My WAG is that Nic wanted the blood of Christ for some ritual work. The grail would have the most "residue" on it most likely, but each of the other objects would famously have some on them too, with the exception of the plaque.

But we dont really know what that is yet either. (my assumption was that it was the plaque affixed to the crucifix in most depictions of it, which bears the letter INRI) Seems likely if it was affixed to the cross, there might be some blood on it just by nature of where it was.

There's also the supposition Harry makes in Death Masks that the shroud had faith-related power, simply because people believed in it. That would be enough to supercharge the grail, too. Probably also the plaque.

DF Spoilers / Re: How did the Red Court Originate?

The Madrigal's father going skydiving without a parachute was in Proven Guilty, it comes up when they're talking about how Madrigal ended up with the Jann.

Quote
Thomas nodded. 'Scion of a djinn and a mortal. He worked for Madrigal's father. Then my father arranged to have Madrigal's father go skydiving naked. Glau stuck with Madrigal after that.'

Not sure of the hard copy page no. since I've only got the DF books through ibooks.

DF Spoilers / Re: Drakul is the third Walker

Jim seems to have cribbed his idea of free will from the Alex Verus.  Or maybe I put the cart before the horse, and it's the other way around.  Benedict Jacka's character sees events as a set of diminishing probabilities as he approaches a nexus.  So his choices become limited by decisions he makes as he goes on.  But if he survives that nexus the choices again become numerous

IIRC, Dresden actually describes how the Ordo Lebes member with short term precognition’s ability works in a very similar, cloud of probabilities kind of way.

DF Spoilers / Re: Butters’ ancestry?

I’d never heard of Khazar society, or the etymological roots of the name Waldo. Thank you, I’ve learned something new today and it’s only 7 am!

The origins of his name make me wonder more about this. Now, whether it’s by design or just coincidence, I guess we won’t know until later.

Wow, that sounds like a headache. Where are you from?

‘Straya, but I’m built for colder climates. I pretty much stay indoors all Summer.

Getting all excited for the new book is what made me sign up!

On weather news: here it has been cold enough for jackets. I like it when it’s cold enough for jackets. From October to April, no jackets can be worn and that is terrible.

DF Spoilers / Re: Wizard McFee from “Changes”
« on: August 22, 2019, 01:39:03 PM »
I always figured that not all full council wizards are made the same. Perhaps wizard McFee’s talents aren’t in the overt power-slinging field.

I think Harry also points out how difficult it is on the phone when people on both ends are wizards?

After recently re-reading Turn Coat, I wonder if perhaps she’s just a dreaded Bureaucromancer?

DF Spoilers / Butters’ ancestry?
« on: August 22, 2019, 01:34:00 PM »
So, we know that Michael is a descendent of Charlemagne, Sanya of Saladin and Shiro was a descendant of the last king of Okinawa (IIRC?)

The short story detailing his first job against the Baku made it sound like he was into it for the long haul. That makes me wonder, who is he a descendant of?

I’m guessing it would be Solomon?

(Apologies if this has already been covered before!)

DF Books / Re: Jade Court of Vampires
« on: August 22, 2019, 01:16:09 PM »
I so speculate, because Butcher routinely says the White Court can pass as human under mist circumstances. What if the Jade Court is one more subversive level beyond that? It does make for a great survival trait. And if they were into cultural manipulation, rather than individual, they could feed off the zieghtgeist of whatever they proffered. Ancient Mai might have the White Council in thrall, albeit unknowingly, manipulating the whole society rather than particular members. If so, she certainly would regard any Black Council as a direct competitor. What if Peabody had been working for her crew, for instance? Multiple black interests add intrigue and I wouldn't put it past Butcher.

That would certainly make sense - the Black Court are pretty noticeable, looking like reanimated corpses and such. The Red court are somewhat noticeable, given the right circumstances where their meatsuit gets a bit skew-whiff. The White Court could pass for human quite easily. We haven't heard anything really about the Jade Court, so they're either quite niche, or just *really* good at hiding.
