DFRPG / Re: [Character Creation] How to make Daredevil?
« on: March 30, 2012, 03:40:33 PM »
I'd strongly argue that he also has at least Inhuman Speed for another -2 refresh. I'd also allow Inhuman Strength and Toughness as well.
That's not part of the powers DareDevil has, though. He's an ordinary human with superhuman senses, and that's it.

I could see giving him Speed for the dodging bonus, but for that, it would be more thematically appropriate to just write up a Stunt that does the same thing, for 1 less Refresh.

The only real issue I have there is mechanically. If you already have a weapon of high rating, allowing THAT to satisfy the catch just makes you that much more of that one badass who overshadows the whole party. Everyone else is using their claws and daggers while you get to deal 4- or 5-stress hits left and right. And THEN this big tank comes along and everyone else is that much more ineffective against it, while you get to bypass its Catch and kill it that much harder, leaving everyone else in the party to wonder why they ever bother doing anything except throwing out a few maneuvers here and there.

I mean, it's one thing to be the star fighter in a party. It's quite another when you leave everyone else in the dust to the point where they don't even feel useful.

I knew Sanctaphrax would have a few links available ;-)

Those things (or werebuffalos or werebears), by all rights, should have some natural armor rating and extra stress, as detailed in Inhuman Toughness. Problem is, that needs to be assigned to a Catch, and those animals don't really have Catches. You just need a big enough bullet. So, the Catch should offer a +0 refund, but what would you put there?

So like The Colt, from Supernatural.

Seems like it'd be pretty expensive, if nothing else. I'd limit its use, at least, by making it a muzzle-loading repeater or limit the ammo available or something like that. Maybe make an Aspect out of it, costing a Fate Point to use.

I just don't think statting it in terms of Refresh is the right way to go. Just my personal opinion, though.

By the time the far future comes about, the catch to magic will change from tech-hex to something else.  Bob has said it has changed before, and if people rely on technology simply to live, magic would have to adjust or cease to exist (a wizard born on a starship would likely not survive to procreate, for example).

Good point. Bob did say "every three centuries" or so. Maybe it'd have subspace effects, since that's the newest technological advancement by then.

A futuristic Star Trek world would be hilarious, what with technology malfunctioning all over the place. It would certainly explain a large chunk of Next Generation episodes!

Your Story, page 61. It's where it's talking about writing the backstories for your story aspects.

Oh, believe me, with my group, there's no way I'll ever be able to compete with their roleplaying, minmaxing, or general character-building skills. I mean, I'm not bad at any of those, but some of them are on a whole new level.

This seems shameless, using one forum to promote another.

I'm also shameless, and I love both products, so you've earned my vote :-D

There really isn't any way to go from Red Court Infected -> White Court Vamp though (They're two different Beasts entirely), the only exit (leaving out GM handwavery) for a Red Court Infected, is eventually giving in to the hunger and becoming a full Red Court Vamp and an NPC. (It would be interesting however to see what would happen if a Red Court Vamp bit a White Court Virgin though...which nature would be dominant).
That would be an awesome character to play. A Red-Court infected White-Court virgin. Torn between the two courts plus his own humanity, and eventually (after enough major milestones), he Feeds (either on blood or in lust), and the Court he aligns with takes complete control, extinguishing the other demon completely.

Or not quite completely...

I love being a DM. I can just roll up a new character and RP with him in whichever session I want!

A LOT of good points, there.

I think it should still be possible to talk someone into giving up even when the fists start flying, but it should be a LOT harder to do during combat than around a table.

I'll talk with my group and see what they want to do.

See, I'd always just played such that, even if you're in a physical fight, you can still make mental or social attacks, and if any one is taken out, he loses the fight. Either he surrenders to a point you made or his brain shuts down or something.

Maybe throw in some free Aspects that can be tagged in a situation, like adrenalin's flowing too hotly for words to have the same impact or something.

I just let them do social attacks on their turn, mix it all into the same conflict. Running two conflicts simultaneously like that would just be overly confusing.

To determine turn order, just go with whatever type of conflict it started as. And if one's going to continue trying to talk while the other is using his fists, then do Empathy of the first guy vs. Alertness of the second.

As an aside, it struck me as odd to see people crunching numbers on a system that is so obviously story based / not about numbers. The DnD community crunches numbers on a daily bases, but that game is all about numbers.
Near as I can tell, these are the only numbers really worth crunching.
