I'm going to have to pull out of this debate. I'm starting to mentally internalize it and question myself, which never ends well.

When I start taking my own BS seriously, I tend to self-destruct  ;)

Philosophy gives me a hard time because it is so far removed from my usual thought process.

That's all very romantic, Ark..  but it isn't a philosophical argument.

And also, logic is more of a discovery than an invention.

Truth be told, I'm bad at Philosophy. I've never been able to wrap my head around the point of it.
I once had to write a paper on the subject of nothingness. It made no sense to me. So I turned in a blank sheet of paper and got an A. Refer to my First Law (in the sig)  ;)

Well, logic was created by man, was it not? In a reality without humans, there is not logic, which I find to be subjective on an individual basis.

What constitutes a philosophical argument, anyway? Is it not all subjective? The ravings and musings of a higher mind trying to make sense of a cold reality they can't transcend?

I would like to examine these bombs.

And yes, it very much looks like we are a series of chemical processes that think.  Epistemologically speaking, we can never be 100% sure of this, though.  We know from experience that things are not as they appear.  My keyboard looks like a solid object, but in reality it's a network of bajillions of tiny things called molecules that are buzzing around like bees!  How are we to know that that's the end of it?

Stand outside, with the sun shining down on your face, a cool breeze blowing at your back. Feel the warmth and the chill, synergistic, stimulating neural pathways up and down your spine.

Think of the stirring in your chest when you see a beautiful woman.

Imagine the cries of victory and the swelling of pride when you've finally overcome the obstacles that have plagued you.

The loss of a loved one, taken too early, the wrenching pain in your gut.

Electrons and protons may make up the world, and cells may swarm together to create a being, but these are the things that define our lives.

We are alive because we feel.

Alternatively, being gifted with a responsive and chemically efficient neural network defines life. Birth, growth, reproduce, and die. Let the chemical reactions run to completion, to the final product, a cold, shriveled shell.

Dina- I consider logic to be purely a human construct, just as good and evil are. What creation of man, logic in this case, dares to define the miracle of my life?
And I read it too, Dina. My excuse is the same as Don's. We're moving pretty darn fast here.

How is that proof?  My senses would tell me that something like seems to be another human being is standing in front of me, but then how do I trust my senses?
Have you got something better to trust?

I've destroyed many a philosophical debate by logic bombs. Or by pointing out that we are essentially a series of chemical processes given sentience.

Or took the obviously stupid side of a debate and won.

How do I know for sure that I'm not in some sort of matrix-like reality right now?  You people could all just be simulations or figments of my imagination.

Generally speaking, that's precisely what we are. Cyberspace avatars, controlled and manipulated in this realm by personalities at electronic consoles.

No, no. That was supposed to happen in Matrix 2 and 3, which never existed *shakes head*
If it wasn't for some excellent Hugo Weaving, I would unequivocally support that statement.

How bout we talk about the Matrix

If you had the choice, right now and you found out you were in the matrix, would you leave?

This does not mean you are the one you are just getting a chance to leave.

It depends. If I could control the Matrix, knowing it's nature, I would stay.
If it was between the life I have now and a hopeless war with machines...I'll take the robot war.

Uh...not tonight, thanks  :D

Maybe another time I'll derail the thread into a nice philosophical musing, but not tonight. I'm just here to chill and chat, while my cheap massage pad works out my sore back.

I am cursed to only memorize the irrelevant.

I could lecture for days about the 7 forms of Lightsaber combat.

But I can never remember what CWA stands for...(The Clean Water Act...and I'm an Environmental Scientist)

There is no "meant to be".  If it truly were not meant to be, it wouldn't be possible.  This is a journey into a new realm of knowledge.  Not all are comfortable with it.  Though people weren't comfortable with the printing press, antibiotics, or the automobile when they first came out, either.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.
- H.P. Lovecraft

I wholeheartedly agree and embrace a future of madness and insanity.
