Have his little sister get really pissed at him, mainly because he is leaving, but partly because she can't go with him. She has a screaming/crying hissy fit.

Rick Riordan, the author of the Percy Jackson novels had a nice way to keep the supernatural secret, he called it the Mist. It worked on ordinary people by clouding their perceptions as to what was going on.

wizard, shaman, thaumaturge, all names for the same thing.

Oh, and the Druids of legend are nothing like those so named in D & D, and heaven save me from those writers who can't divorce themselves from this game system.

First off, the whole sunlight thing was created by FW Murnau for his rip-off of Dracula.
Crosses are also solar symbols, and some authors throw in the idea that Crosses are psychosimatic.
In legend, garlic is a symbol of life, but you could throw in the fact that garlic is a natural antibiotic.

I see shamans as a weird combination of a priest, a psychic, and a thaumaturge(wizard).

I believe this is allowed under Fair Use, though you might want to tread with caution if one of your characters goes in for some negative criticism of the place in question, (e.g. "This Busch Gardens place really sucks ass, doesn't it?!)

I didn't hear of Jim having any problem with using the Field Museum or Sue in Dead Beat or Wrigley Field in Blood Rites; whether he had to get permission is something one of the mods may know about.

Doesn't part of their funding come from public sources?

I think he should keep it, it could lend itself quite nicely to a variety of plot arcs.    Especially if vampires can turn out considerably different as they 'age' depending on choices they make.

Sunlight could "turn off" their abilities.

Throw out the sunlight thing, that was added by F. W. Murnau.

What if there is a defensive spell that causes a magic to return to the environment.

Throw in a Hex Gate, that allows a person to control chance and probability.

Why not use the idea of magic being able to manipulate the Platonic Realm? (I don't think this is a new idea, but alot of authors don't come out and say that is the main basis of their magic.)
