DFRPG / Crunching the numbers - a sample "combat"
« on: July 07, 2010, 02:01:57 AM »
Alright, to start figuring out the game, I decided to run a sample combat between a Hellhound (OW, page 46) and a Malk (OW, page 48). Here is how it "went down".

Scene - Woodland clearing - aspects -     Huge old mossy tree trunk
                  Bramble bush
                  Trees
                  Medium Grass

Each fey has 2 fate points.

The hellhound is roaming through the woods, hunting. A malk is doing the same. Both come within perception range of the other. A roll will be made to determine who notices who, first.

I decide difficulty for the Hellhound is 4 (the malks stealth). Difficulty for the Malk is 2 (the Hellhounds survival).

Hellhound rolls a -1 against 4 (alertness against a value = to malks stealth) This results in a 2, or a failure of 2 to notice the malk. (Hellhound has good (+3) alertness.)

Malk rolls a 2 against 2, which results in 5, or 3 shifts (significant success) Malk has a good (+3) alertness.

GM rules that this lets the malk add an “oblivious” tag to the Hellhound.

Round one: Hellhound is unaware that it is in combat. Malk makes a stealth roll - free tagging the oblivious, to set up an ambush. rolls negative one. add +6 (2 for tag, 4 for stealth). Ends in 5. Hellhound rolls alertness (+3) against a 5. Rolls 0, so fails.

When an Ambush  succeeds, the target can only defend at mediocre. Cannot take standard action.

Malk spends a fate point to tag oblivious for attack. Rolls a 1. +5 (+3 for fists, +2 for tag), Hellhounds rolls a 0. Since its a being ambushed, defends at mediocre (0) instead of good (+3). Malk gets a 6. With a +2 for claws, thats a total of 8. More than enough to take down the hellhound. The Hellhound decides to take a moderate consequence (belly slash), and a minor consequence (torn ear), to reduce the attack to 2 stress. It marks off its second box. On the bright side, oblivious is now gone.

The Hellhound wants to offer a concession. (And neithers Malks, nor Hellhounds are beasts, so its doable). So he offers the following concession: (its a 3 parter) Bring food to the clearing and leave it every other day for a fortnight, enough for a malk and a cluster of cubs. Be indebted to the malk, until the debt is called in. And lastly, not reveal the debt to anyone.

Notes: Reading back over it, I think the oblivious tag being granted for the significant success is overdone. At the least, it should have been a fragile one. Perhaps sticky on a potent success.

But, do I have the basics right?

DFRPG / Re: Downloadable scenarios
« on: July 06, 2010, 09:03:39 PM »
Well they aren't downloadable - they are just adventure ideas (for a wizard and a werewolf), but this thread  (http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=517766&page=2) at rpg.net has some really snapping ideas. I've put in three that I rather like

52) Did you know that Professor Josephson down at the University of Central Florida teaches a class dedicated to how to kill monsters? Well, you do now. And it seems the werewolf is this years final exam.

53) There are certain questions that no one has answers to, because no one's ever been willing to test it before, like: can a wizard effectively hex out an atomic bomb without causing it to detonate? Well, it looks like your lucky day, because it's time to find out.

59) There's a rather popular stage magician in town. He does the usual bits, pulls rabbits out of hats, makes birds appear out of nowhere, becomes invisible, levitates things, lets people stab him, and so on. The problem? It's not a trick. He's the real deal, and he doesn't even realize other magicians fake it. Unfortunately, this means he isn't even trying to pretend its an act, and some people are starting to realize how real it is. Of course, the White Council can't have that, and the send the wizard and the werewolf to deal with him. But, he hasn't done anything wrong.

Well I ordered the PDF/Book combo, so I've been busy reading the file. :) Though I have to admit, I can't wait until one of the E-readers does a smash up job with PDF's. When that happens, I'm getting one.

But, read the blog over on Dresden Files rpg.com. Its mostly one poor schmuck handling all this. So buck up, and learn to enjoy the anticipation. Its good for you.

I got a suggestion that I love, but which doesn't fit the guys personality, for an aspect.

Since he spent time in a sanitarium, and can turn into a dog - "Barking Mad".

I'm tempted to tweak things just to take the aspect.

Thanks again for the suggestions.  :)

Great, another reason to anxiously await the arrival of my books.

Hmm. I've read all twelve of the Dresden books - though not recently, I'll admit. I don't recall Dresden casually stepping into the nevernever. He seems to go to specific points to enter it. Am I misremembering, or is it that he is capable of stepping casually into the nevernever, but doesn't because its highly likely to be a Bad Idea. (I don't remember the details, but how did he end up in the dining hall of the Master of the Wild Hunt? Was that a casual excursion into the nevernever (or not casual, but a desperate attempt to get away from something, so he did it blind?).

Werewolves - where would you propose that they be able to step over? They don't even count as magic/supernatural for inflicting of harm.....

In the books, it talks about supernatural creatures and the "World Walker" power. It uses the example of a white court vampire vanishing in the back of strip clubs, or brothels and the like. Harry asks if all supernatural creatures need to take world walker, and William replies No, thats just part of their supernaturalness.

So, do you grant this as a "free" power to player characters? White Court lust vampires can transition in brothels, strip clubs, etc. A Changeling dryad in a city park, or forest, a changeling troll under a bridge, etc? Or should this be a one point power? And, what counts as Supernatural? Not werewolves or wizards, based on the books. How about Winter or Summer Knights?

53
Number one: Don't mention the (soft) limits you set. Down the road, if someone starts pushing pens in google maps or something, and notices "Hey, we've never been out of West Whateverville!" then everyone will get a chuckle. For the most part, players never really notice any soft limits you set. Though, if you point out the soft limits, they promptly find a zillion reasons for why those limits are "crimping their style".

This is the physical books, and physical bookmarks? If so, yes, that is a very nice touch.

DFRPG / Re: Campaign Ideas Thread
« on: July 04, 2010, 04:09:31 AM »
I was kicking around a concept for a character along this line, but after a discussion with a friend this week, I can really see this as a small beginning campaign.

The idea was simple: have a character who is a member of the SCA or another similar organization becoming exposed to the supernatural via these groups. This included reenactors for those Wild West Shootouts, Civil War, etc. It seemed to be a fun idea for a Vanilla Mortal, a Minor Talent, or a slew of other ideas (see below).

So. . .imagine the possibilities. You have mundane mortals living by old methods of living, older supernaturals can participate and use their experiences from that time to their advantage, and perhaps even use these events as a way of networking with other supernaturals. How about a group of fae actors that come in to play pranks on the viewers, or Sidhe Lords that want to relive the times of mortal nobility? An old Warden who has taken these events as a chance to train and test his (or her) apprentices in combat? A Red Court Infected living by a knightly code as a means of keeping his Hunger under control, and always moving with the group to remain hidden?
<clip>
Lots of ideas, and with this being a smaller community than a city, I can see it as either an introduction "campaign," a short lived set of games (i.e. holiday breaks), or even just an entire story arc (or potentially recurring arc).

Any thoughts or opinions on this?

Yes. I like it. I'm giving serious thought to running it as a short (2-3 session) mini scenario.

"Claws of the dead" - a 1 (?) point power which adds 2 points stress damage to attacks against incorporeal spirits. +1 stress against defilers of the dead, or corporeal undead (like ghouls, or grave robbers), and removes the "must acknowledge" clause. Maybe a two point power? (added, because it stacks with regular claws).

Hmm. Perhaps a better would be "Claws of the Dead - satisfies "the catch" (if any) for undead, or defilers of the dead."

What I meant by asking about what powers you're thinking of for this character is that there are so many directions you could take it that it is a little hard to give you good input on aspects without knowing what the character will be doing.

For instance by taking "I Know the Dead", and adding the subtitle "and they won't shut up" I am getting a very strong Medium/Ghost/Sixth Sense type of vibe, so that is a guy who is being forced by Anubis to deal with ghosts and spirits of the dead and their problems.

That's very different character from say a Zombie Killing Undertaker charged by Anubis to make sure that the dead stay in the ground, battling Necromancers and putting down zombie uprisings with a Boomstick, a Sharpened Spade, and some ancient Egyptian funerary rites.

An idea for the character that popped into my head after a quick wikipedia search on Anubis would be to make a character who is an Spiritual Counselor, essentially a guy who is an attorney for the dead, gathering evidence, arguing their case, and lifting their earthly burdens so that their hearts can be light as Maat's ostrich feather and they can then get into the afterlife.

This is a great example of why I didn't want to post my character ideas. He is still a concept, and the spinning off of ideas is golden.  Those concepts are quite good. And, he won't actually be fully statted up until the group meets for character generation.  Yet, here is the basic idea, so far.

I wanted to be a werewolf type, but not a "stock" werewolf. I ended up pondering Anubis. (After lots of twists and turns). Long story short - he is were, but turns into something resembling a giant jackal. Or to most modern americans, a funny looking Doberman Pinscher. His "job" from Anubis, is to find spirits, or defilers of corpses, and return them to true death, or stop them.

So  - tentative
echoes of the beast
Ghost Speaker  (or whatever that see ghost power is)
Alt form human, affecting
Claws
Shadow Walker
"Claws of the dead" - a 1 (?) point power which adds 2 points stress damage to attacks against incorporeal spirits. +1 stress against defilers of the dead, or corporeal undead (like ghouls, or grave robbers), and removes the "must acknowledge" clause. Maybe a two point power? (added, because it stacks with regular claws).
And, possibly the ability to step into the Never Never when in an area of interest to Anubis (Graveyards, Funeral homes, morgues, in the presence of a corpse, or to get to a ghost).
Marked by power

"Hound of Anubis"
And "Hounded by Ghosts" both spring to mind as concept tags.

He doesn't judge - thats the sphere of Anubis himself. He just returns the undead to where they can be judged. Which might pose interesting complications when dealing with a good undead.

(edit add:)
Also, he is a very small man - about five feet tall. Not physically impressive, but fairly stocky for his height. Asian Indian. Didn't know a darn thing about Anubis until he killed a zombie (Corpse was an Egyptian man) in his mortuary. He almost died - indeed, maybe he did die. He remembers talking to something while laying there in his large pool of blood. When he awoke, he had the full slate of powers. Though discovering the giant jackal form took a while.

He ended up in a sanitarium, for a couple of years. By "Coincidence" there was a very, very old man incarcerated there, who recognized him, and taught him a gazillion tons of lore. Mostly about dead things. Eventually he got out. Later of course, when he returns, no record of the old man exists.

He is a family man. First wife is Ingrid, a statuesque Norwegian (6 foot 2). They are still reasonably friendly. She is a Valkyrie, just to make things odd. They have a son. He is almost 16.

Present Wife is a stereotypical Irish Catholic woman. Freckled, pale, with fiery red hair and a temper to match. She too is tall (he has a weakness for tall women). She stands 5 ft 11. They have 4 children. Twin girls, who are 13, and are hellions. He worries about them. Another girl, who is 8, and finally, a 5 year old boy.

He has money problems, and is pretty constantly running short of time. Lots of events to attend (basketball games, etc).

Family man will be one of his aspects.

Thanks for the input!

But, I have my ideas for powers. I'm looking for some sample aspects that I can play up. (I like the one "I Know the dead" (and its subtitled "and they won't shut up").

Ooooh, as a nice flavor trivia, he hates the movie ghost. (Too realistic.)

DFRPG / Aspects for a Anubis oriented character
« on: July 03, 2010, 08:44:44 PM »
Greetings all,

I'm working up an Emissary of Power, Anubis character concept. What would some cool aspects, based around

Anubis is the protector, (and judge) of the dead.
Cemeteries are sacred.
Dead Bodies.

The character isn't even Egyptian. He is a very small man, and asian indian. But
has somehow ended up as an Emissary of Anubis after destroying a zombie at the
funeral home where he worked. (The corpse was Egyptian....) He is/was an
undertaker (everything is still nebulous, actually. The character is still
concept).

Thanks!
