The other complicating factor, if we just pull the Veil part of Spirit out, it's a 2 refresh ability, which makes it as/more expensive than say Channeling (Spirit) that gets the same functionality and a bunch of other powerful stuff. Admittedly, the 2 point glamor ability doesn't cost any mental stress, but is anyone really throwing the 4 or 5 veils a scene it would take for that to matter?

Glamours does one heck of a lot more than just Veils.  Seemings is the real powerhouse in that combo.

Yeah, the 3rd Law is the only one that might reasonably be bypassed by 'consent' without some other finagling.

Some other Laws might be bypassed by not violating them directly yourself and instead creating a situation that allows the prospective subject to cause those effects to themselves (a potential canon example that was brought up recently on these boards might be a stationary wall of fire that someone chooses to step into, resulting in their prompt fiery death).  This is a contentious area of, at best, 'grey' magic.

in the hands of a mortal wizard with less than a quarter-century of practical magical experience under his belt.

And a personal approach to evocation that favours power over control.

Molly or Ramirez would likely achieve the same ends (open door, retreive bottle) in far less blunt fashions.

Harry's failings are not suitable evidence for the limits of magic.

I don't recall that law's stance on non-humans, but the fact that the target is willing does not get you a pass.

Thaumaturgy with evocation's speed and methods is executed exactly as evocation in all ways except that the end result goes beyond what evocation is normally capable of into realms normally accessible only to thaumaturgy.

At the very least, your character should be able to maneuver, assess, and declare several relevant aspects useful in the casting of a large thaumaturgical ritual.
Personally, I'd likely rule (or possibly Compel) that only those sharing the same basic form of magic with the 'lead' ritualist could join directly in the casting itself.  Even substantially different traditions of mortal magic would prove difficult to integrate efficiently.

The player of a character that achieves a take-out result 'owns' the narrative of that take-out.  They may dictate the effects as they see fit within the bounds of reason as adjudicated by the gaming group as a whole.  It is not inherently unreasonable that someone taken out by an attack narrated as a ball of fire suffer little more than minor burns, a concussion, and some time unconscious, for instance.
This stems from the fact that an attack that 'succeeds' mechanically does not necessarily 'hit' narratively.

I suggest you take a look at the 'special effect attacks' section on page 326.

Had a character shortly after I got into DFrpg with the aspect: Armed for Bear, Hunting Monsters

DFRPG / Re: A few seconds ahead - How strong is it?
« on: April 23, 2013, 12:16:19 AM »
A few Seconds Ahead is more than twice as powerful as a comparable stunt, since it moves two defense trappings without restriction for the cost of 1 refresh where a stunt would move 1 such trapping with some sort of meaningful restriction (in the case of Footwork, for instance, the skill the trapping is being moved to already possessed a lesser version of the trapping being moved) for the same cost.

I reject any premise that labels (cosmic truth) Lawbreaker any who so much as types 'What is an Outsider?' into a google search.
The Wardens may enforce as they will, but that interpretation on the cosmic truth of the 7th Law leads only to absurdity.

Yeah, I'm reasonably confident I'll be able to get some of these once they're properly in production, but I want to back the kickstarter (by way of pooling through them, given the specifics of this project), a concept which has not been well received by them in the past.
I'm just a typical impatient gamer who wants their shinies now (or as soon as can be arranged).

Psychomancy is form of Thaumaturgy.
Except insofar as it might also be available elsewhere, such as indicated by the oft-cited notation in the Spirit section.
Just in case anyone thought this was a case of the RAW being unambiguous, or the community approaching a consensus.

Yeah, with those international shipping prices...
I'd really like to back this, but the best I'll realistically be able to do is try to cajole a local retailer.  Hopefully they'll be more responsive than they have in the past.

The 7th Law forbids 'seeking beyond', not 'seeking of beyond'.

In the past, I did most of my pbp gaming on a forum site called Myth-Weavers, which has an impressive built-in dice roller.
Not terribly helpful for games happening here or in live chats, though.

DFRPG / Re: Stoicism Catches
« on: April 17, 2013, 04:51:06 PM »
An easy one would be 'Mundane Trauma' - The individual is protected from supernatural forms of mental assault, but conventional means of torture and trauma are no less effective than they ould be against a comparable Pure Mortal.
Then, there's the situational Catches, such as 'while Church bells ring' (one of my favourites) - while the character can hear church bells ringing, their protection is compromised - or 'on the full moon', etc.
