DF Spoilers / Re: Mab is cleaning up the White Court

  • (I have a WAG that) Margaret may have hinted to Papa that she had set "special" protections on Thomas, and Papa was unwilling to risk it after she had blocked his ability to Feed his Hunger

an interesting idea, but I think by now that info would have leaked thru Lara. Earlier in the series, I'd have given it a better chance.

Over the (many) years, I expect Raith had been hit with magic more than once, within sight of other Whamps (particularly his daughters (who seemed to act as personal bodyguards?)).  That he had some sort of protection seems unlikely to be a well-kept secret.  The details, though... I suspect he intentionally dropped multiple contradictory hints.  Make a maze of dead-end clues, swim in a school of red herrings.  Show up as having a unique & potent ability, that nobody understands.

They have some anti-magic tech. Those arm wraps they used in the duels. put something similar looking inti his suits. When he is attacked they glow. They are not draining magic, he has them on battery power.

So, Elaine proactively contacts Carlos... "I'm helping the minor talents organize and train, adopting the kids who were orphaned by the White Court, etc.  Can you take a look at this training-material on the Laws of Magic for me?  We really don't want to run afoul of the wardens!  Maybe you could even send wardens to do occasional trainings with us?  Pretty please?"

And, being a full-on Wizard-level talent herself, she can filter the trainees, make sure no Warden ever encounters any trainees that the White Council would want to grab.  But she can send a few strong-but-not-quite-WC-strong talents to Carlos for "testing."

Might be careful having Elaine around Carlos too much. He's convinced NOW she is a minor talent. What if he stumbles on she is likely stronger than him? Isn't she almost Harry-level? Just a little more finesse?

And how well do wizards detect power levels? She has Carlos fooled, and he's strong enough to be a Warden. The wizards might only be able to see on and off. Harry seemed surprised at Ascher's power and he had been on the expedition with her.

It's specifically the castle, I think, that becomes problematic for the Council.

Bastion of the Winter Knight, staffed by Winter-aligned Fae ...  Basically (from the outside) it looks an awful lot like "this is a part of Winter."

Gotta be careful on that line, because if it is Winter, it could be an embassy, which would make Harry an ambassador - is there diplomatic immunity?

Which is kind of weird, because the Knight is at least partly a hitman. Surely the Queens would expect Knights who don't bring magic of their own to rely on Winter ice magic in the course of carrying out certain kill orders.

Can't kill HUMANS with magic. Vampires, etc, other supernaturals are fine. Other Fae are fine.

Icicle thru the guts like the Ramp duel? Looks like Winter mantle, though he could have hit her with anything anyway

He nearly had an entire hand amputated - does that count?

Nope. Almost doesn't count. Lack of commitment. Hand looks almost normal now.

I'm pretty sure the White Council wouldn't go to war against Winter.  Frankly, that would be tantamount to suicide, and I think most of them know it.  Harry's the WK, and with winterfae now inhabiting the Castle, it would be hard to see a White Council attack there as anything else.

I disagree. Not saying the WC WILL move against a school, but that the SCHOOL being considered part of Winter.  The Knight is a liaison with a foot in each world, but he CAN be attacked for his HUMAN side without it being seen as an attack on Winter.  Shooting a Marine at a US Embassy on guard duty can be considered an attack on the US. The same Marine being stabbed in a bar fight offduty that night is not.

It also strikes me that if any attack on the WK is an attack on Winter - even if he was doing it at Harry's behest, why didn't Winter move against Kincaid? He shot the WK with intent to kill him. They didn't because that was Harry on Harry - personal, not professional Winter work.

Mab may not be anti-Raith as such, but may be anti-Papa and thinks she can work with Lara. If Lara then arranges events that weaken the other Houses within the Court, it strengthens Lara's hold.  She has her Knight in a position of power within the Court, where he can pass along info (but - what happens if his loyalties are divided between his Queen and his wife?)

Harry has shown some ability at geomancy - could he repair the Deeps for Lara? Even crude walls and a ceiling could later be refined like the polished tunnel walls by human contractors. Though Harry is likely more crush rock than carve rock.

Did we ever conform Papa's shield is Outsider-powered? It's a good possibility, maybe probability, but even the likes of the Forest People have an immunity, so maybe someone else can bestow it too.

Nah,  Harry would teach Shop, the making of magical tools and artefacts.

Harry can't teach shop, he has all his fingers.....

Trust me, the last thing you want on a rolling sailing ship is a loose cannon...  ::)

Oh, yes, i read "Veeck as in Wreck"!

(a baseball team owner, serving as a Marine in WWII, had a recoiling artillery piece crush his leg, eventually requiring amputation)

Mab is something horrible, at that point in the narrative she is Harry’s worst nightmare, she wants to take away his self control to become winter Knight. Nick on the other hand knows she is the Defender of the Outer Gates, and horrible to him. Nick was telling the truth from both parties point of view but not objectively.

Why tell a lie when the partial truth is perfectly acceptable.

Mab doesn't really want to take away all of Harry's self control. A thinking Knight is more dangerous than a bloodthirsty sadistic idiot. And (as I actually said just yesterday to a Maid of Honor who absolutely ROASTED the groom in her toast and claimed she held back) a rapier is more elegant than a bludgeon. The Fae like to style a bit.

The Raith’s breed for beauty, not brains, so why on Earth Harry?

Back in the day, there were many sailing ships with graceful lines. But some had ugly cannons to defend themselves. Harry is a cannon, and often a loose one. But they have uses.

I wonder is this is a proscription of the White God to protect human bodily autonomy, free will and to push mankind to advance medical technology? The exceptions are very limited, and this is something oft stated - medical technology is about as good as magic these days.

We saw TWG give Michael the power to heal Harry's mental block - likely because Mab, a supernatural, imposed it with likely no warning. Uriel doesn't heal Harry because he tried to climb up a ladder against  building on fire and fell. He made choices there.

Even the Apostles did some healing in The Bible. Vanilla humans.

The thing that I think many don't realize is what the Swords actually do.

People talk about the "superweapons" (from Hades' vault) and say they're "stronger" than the Swords.  That's not (at all) the case.

If one of the Angels inside one of the Swords had stepped forth to do battle with Ethniu & the Eye, they could have put Ethniu over their knee, spanked her like a child, and given her another 3-4 millenia timeout.  Or, y'know, just killed her out of hand.

But that's not their job.

I don't think we know enough about the Swords to say that, There are ranks even among angels, I don't think the one guarding the elevator in Colin Murphy's office building is Uriel-class. Yes, Uriel could have walked across Lake Shore Drive and said "Invasion is off. Go back home, or I will make you. " Michael? Sure, he could too, or Gabriel. If they all had that kind of power - why would there be a dozen at the Carpenters' ? One would be plenty.

You could say it is in the Holy Swords since there supposedly an angel in the hilt of each of them.

I think any angel likely resides in the Nail - supposedly there is a Nail from the Cross in each hilt. that's the real relic part
