DFRPG / Re: Balancing a Wizard/White Court Virgin PC
« on: September 29, 2018, 07:28:56 AM »
I don't know much about DFA, but...White Court Virgin lets you take a Pure Mortal mantle in addition to itself. So you probably want to cut down the Magical Practitioner mantle until it's roughly equivalent to a Pure Mortal mantle. Maybe removing the ability to exhaust yourself for a power bonus would work?

A White Court Virgin already has one way to exhaust themself for a power boost. A second feels a little redundant.

DFRPG / Re: Spell [+1] -- Evocation needed?
« on: September 29, 2018, 07:20:02 AM »
To my eye, it looks like you do need Evocation or Channelling. Which makes sense, since having those Powers makes spending mental stress a fair bit more impactful.

I wouldn't worry to much about going by the book, though. Rebate Powers are pretty poorly balanced overall. And this one's basically an afterthought. Doesn't even have a full writeup. If I were GMing for you, I'd be ready to work something out.

Maybe you can attach Beast Change and Modular Abilities to Spell, but it makes assuming your beast form into a full action rather than a supplemental one. Casting a spell is a full action, after all.

One track.

If that seems odd to you, bear in mind that consequences are under player control. Consequence slots are a lot like Fate Points.

Not sure I'm reading this right.

Is it, "while the aspect exists, you may tag the aspect to dodge with Intimidate" or "once you've used the tag, you may dodge with Intimidate until the Aspect is removed"?

If the former, it's way too weak. If the latter, it's not terrible. But to be honest, I think I'd allow it without the use of the tag. "You may use Intimidation to dodge attacks made by characters who have Aspects reflecting their fear of you" doesn't seem broken.

I don't know who that is.

What do you mean?

Increasing the Refresh cost of the Power to remove the FP cost?

Eyeballing it, 4 Refresh might be fair for FP-less Righteousness. But I feel like taking away the FP cost would make the Power less flavourful.

Like:  OK you can slap together some disparate Aspects/Powers, but really it's the "fluff" and the RP that makes these combo's come alive.  Asking you to just "do the mechanics" seems like... kinda not to the point?

That's not the idea. If you want a clearer sense of what I have in mind, look to the first pages, and to characters like John Jameson.

So...   Is this enough to work with?  Have I postulated too much that's not really Dresdenverse'ish / DFRPG'ish or needs custom stuff to work?

I can work with that. But I'm a little hesitant to just start writing because you seem to have a very clear idea of who this person is and I suspect my writeup might contradict the image in your head. What are you looking for, here?

One note: I prefer Compels and normal Refresh-spending mechanics to stuff like Demonic Co-Pilot and Feeding Dependency, though; I've found those Powers to be a pain in the neck.

I only very vaguely know who that is. So I'll pass.

Anyway, here's Zolo. Not sure I picked right aspects to emphasize in his Aspects, or the best wording for the ones I did choose; feedback on that score would be welcome.

Went for the PP version of mental toughness because a) it's official and b) he can use it for his supernatural martial arts.

Would've liked to add some more stunts and martial arts techniques but ran out of Refresh. I guess Epic weapon 11-13 attacks will just have to be enough.

Thanks.

If anyone's thinking of making a request, remember that a request doesn't have to be a named character from another series. I can work with a picture, a list of disconnected Aspects, four Powers that you wouldn't normally see together, whatever.

Rough Zolo sketch here. Normally wouldn't post this online but right now it seems like the best way to save it.

You know, it's kind of funny how much cross-pollination there seems to be between Exalted and DFRPG specifically.

Maybe I just notice because those are the two RPG fandoms I'm in, but it really seems to me that DFRPG overlaps less with Shadowrun or Vampire or Apocalypse World or what have you. Even though some of those are a lot more similar to DFRPG than Exalted is.

I feel like there's a lot of different directions you can go with "trying to live the way Musashi taught". What do you have in mind beyond the obvious philosophy and swordsmanship aspects?

That aside, one practical note: Antarctica seems likely to test your Endurance and your Survival.

Truth be told I hate canon bless this house and holy touch for obvious reasons. They are way to reliant on stringent criterias that will be extremely difficult to make as something I can consistently fall back on. Would like to look into much better, reliable options. I am open to suggestions.

You might prefer this Power to Bless This House.

The wiki also has a modified form of Holy Touch, but I doubt you'd like it.

Mordite can be handled mechanically in any number of different ways, and all the ways I can think of would work just fine for an undead being.

I'd be inclined to represent a chunk of mordite as an IoP weapon wielded with Discipline, with a high weapon rating and something similar to the All Creatures are Equal Before God power of the Swords of the Cross to let it punch through magical durability. You could totally give something like that to an undead character.

Sure, I can take a crack at Zolo. I'd like to try Anderson first, though.

What can Anderson do? What is he good at, what supernatural abilities does he have?

I feel like reviving this thread. Throw bits and pieces of character-concept at me, I'll stitch them together.

Not sure how many I'll do before I stop, this time around.

Anyone else who wants to make characters here is of course welcome to.

Father Alexander Anderson of the anime Hellsing.

So, what's his deal?

I know he's the champion of the Catholic Church. Fanatically religious, good with knives, and capable of healing very quickly. But that's not enough to make a character sheet.
