DF Spoilers / Re: Has Eb ever messed with Harry's mind?
« on: July 17, 2021, 03:16:32 AM »
I'm pretty sure someone messed around with his memories of confronting Justin and the Walker as a teenager. It seems suspicious that he remembered the events a lot more clearly, and maybe differently, while temporarily deadish.

I'm pretty sure that Eb could do it without anyone noticing it, but there would still be clues.  It would probably depend on Harry's friends or allies picking up on unusual changes in Harry's behavior or memory, just like Michael did before.

It strikes me that the sudden absence of two of the most likely characters most likely to notice something off - Karrin and Thomas - would be a particularly bad time for something like that to happen to the protagonist. So it's probably tempting for Jim to write, especially into a plot where Michael isn't very involved.

Didn't Luccio also mention something about limited precognition as an aspect of the Sight to explain why Harry was supremely familiar with the island even before bonding with it? Maybe his Id was in tune with that well before his waking mind.

They seemed pretty friendly when teaching kids at Camp Kaboom--then again, Harry behaved in a rather appalling way there, so....

I doubt the guy who's been making a necklace of teeth taken from his kills in the war was all that bothered.

Merlin, or Christos. But I doubt Christos at this stage as we haven't seen many hints for it. I am not sure the Merlin needs such a thing tbh.

If you're not going to draw upon enhanced durability when you're batted around and set on fire, what are you holding it for?

Possible, but if character changes end up written as 'because Nemesis' too often, it's going to get predictable.

Turning him adversarial as a consequence of Harry not investing enough trust and effort in maintaining a friendship makes more sense. From the way PT was written, Harry doesn't seem to have checked in with him after getting off the island.

The question is, did he have enough of a problem with the expansion of the BCV to want his own entourage compromised by the publicization of their weaknesses?

Yes, they're competent, and that goes a long way at staying safe ... but the competent thing for a blampire to do when someone recognizes them and is loading up on garlic and holy water is generally to run. A cadre of elite BCV lieutenants without the Stokerlypse spilling their secret vulnerabilities into public knowledge would presumably have been even more of an asset to Drakul than a cadre of elite BCV lieutenants in the Dresdenverse as it stands.

Dirty tricks?  What do you mean by that?  If you mean black magic, not good for Harry.  Also I'm not sure that White Court Vamps know all that much about Denarians in the first place.

They may not, but it never hurts to see. Maybe they have something that's effective against angels ... that would be considered dark, but it's only illegal as far as the Council is concerned if it hurts Marcone the host as well.

(Plus, do Denarians actually count as human for first law purposes? Harry's tried lethal force a few times with no reservations that it would be worth a beheading if he actually succeeded)

Now that he is kicked out of the Council, Harry has no restraints on what knowledge he can acquire now..  The only limitation is getting it, and I bet Bob has a lot of it, Alfred might as well, and practice.

Bob was a secret all along, and the only time Harry asked him for dark / forbidden knowledge, he got so spooked that he ordered Bob to spin off Evil Bob so it would never happen again.

What has changed is he very well might be able to ask Lara for access to the Raith library. That might well have some dirty tricks he could use against a Denarian.

Plus, besides asking Sanya and Michael, Forthill might have something on Namshiel personally.

Oh, that's easy. Rivers of London. He'd be constantly questioning whether Peter was snarking him, but it would be too British to ever be quite sure. And the magic is all based on Latin spell words, where the basic elements have to be strung together in a proper grammar to achieve complex effects - Harry would be so lost.

Mechanism? Perhaps Alfred requires Harry to represent him to cross-multiversal genii loci diplomacy.

DF Spoilers / Re: Could any Senior Council member handle Harry if
« on: July 05, 2021, 02:34:52 AM »
Marcone is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve a goal.  Would not be shocked if he's the next one to attempt a Dark Hallow, and Knight of the Cross Dresden will take him out.  The clash of the Sword, with the Fallen, and the Dark Hallow will fracture space, and time.

Namshiel would probably be rather conflicted about that. On the one hand, host evilly killing a bunch of people is the sort of corrupt-your-human they're supposed to groove on, and (based on DM, if that wasn't another thing the Church has wrong) maybe allow him to run more of his own power through an increasingly corrupted host. On the other hand, is any Fallen going to want his host to gain that much personal power - perhaps enough to be a peer of the Fallen rather than a vessel for them?

And what's the use of corrupting souls if they gain immortality and Hell can't claim them?

He'd probably bat the coin around for a bit just to toy with the fallen inside, then give Mouse a shot at actually hurting it (I don't know if it would work, but worth a try) once he got bored.

Basically that is what Langtry tried to pull in Proven Guilty, when he wanted Molly convicted, claiming he had proxies for the Senior Members missing, when he never even consulted them on how they wanted to vote.

Sure, but it's one thing to make a personal call against a random teenage warlock. Taking advantage like that to expel a member who's still popular with slightly less than half of the rest of the Council is quite another. It's borrowing a lot of political trouble for another day.

Langtry has enough political acumen to have a pretty good idea if he's got the votes among the general membership to kick Harry before the voting even opens. Letting it be decided by the open membership gives him more cover against 40-odd percent of the membership thinking he personally railroaded someone they regard well.

I don't think it is as open as you think, I think Eb meant with other Senior Members.  The reason I think that is back in Summer Knight when they tried to demote Harry back to apprentice, only the Senior Members actually voted.. The rest of the members just witnessed it.. Molly's trial, again only the Senior Members got to vote, remember Langtry claimed to have a proxy for all of them.  Also if everyone got a vote, don't you think Harry would have asked Carlos how he voted?

Carlos said on the way into the summit that he'd voted in Harry's favour, though.

I suppose Langtry could have pulled rank to move if from an open council vote to Senior only based on the rule Eb used in SK that any senior councilor can move a vote from open to senior council only, but but there's nothing in Carlos' accounting of how it went to indicate that happened. It would have been poor politics on his part to have an expulsion vote decided only by himself and Ancient Mai.

Majority?  Really? Four of the Senior members were either in surgery or still off defending the Outer Gates..

No, majority of the open council membership. The expulsion vote came first and was open to all members. That's why Ebenezar was advising in PT that Harry should go to Edinburgh and shake some hands with the other members to reassure them before they voted on him, before everything went pear-shaped.

According to Carlos, it was the suspended capital sentence for roasting turtlenecks that the Merlin decided behind closed doors with Ancient Mai (and, I assume, Martha Liberty). That came after the expulsion vote passed.

I personally assumed she was one of the unflappable Harry's command over the Little Folk disturbed. She has extensive contacts among the spirits and loa- she is the one most likely to know of some rising Za Lord but not know who it was

The expulsion was by majority vote, not just SC. Though my read on it is she was the most likely to have reported him killing the turtlenecks to trigger the death sentence by SC vote, but probably also the primary mover for getting it suspended instead of passed. I think you're right - she's rattled and wants a tighter leash on him.
