Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Jim's 2012 Schedule
« on: July 07, 2012, 02:38:20 PM »
Keep in mind that Jim LIKES doing cons; remember, he's a fan as well. It's just that going to so many of them together wear on him, as it would on anyone. But he's also savvy in regards to PR—authors benefit greatly from having a physical public presence, especially one as amiable, entertaining and interesting as his. It's what really hooked me into his books; I saw him at a con in '07, and between him and Shannon, I moved from simply liking his books a lot to thinking they're extremely good people who deserve our support. It's always a good thing when you can help reinforce people doing right.

It's a balance, in the end: between his own fan-ness and keeping a public image, there's got to be a happy medium.

Edit: I'm in germany too.

Then do as has been suggested and contact DFRPG. They'll help.

If, for example, one of Jim's Beta-Foo were to do an Alera spin-off, Id forsee them having a good perspective on the material from their involvement in the original publishing, as well as enough open communication with the Author that they could conceivably do it fair justice.

Are you insane? If one of us got hold of it, what resulted would likely be the story of Tavi and Kitai's second son, Gluteus Snarkius.

Ditto the above - sometimes, weird stuff happens, so Evil Hat is jaw-droppingly dedicated to customer service.

It comes down to this: is the fanfic-writing the person's hobby or is it a step in a greater dream? If it's a hobby, we have no place criticizing them for doing it. To tell the truth, we have no place criticizing them even if it IS supposed to be a stepping-stone; people have their own paths to follow, and not everyone is supposed to share the same path.

I'm not much into fanfiction, but, like all other fiction, its legitimacy is entirely dependent on the individual work. Consider, for example, all the fantasy compilations out there where multiple authors are given a common world to write in (e.g., Thieves' World); it seems pretty much parallel to fanfic, in that they're using other people's creations, but given that they're pro authors and they get praised for their work in those compilations, that makes it sound as legit as anything else.

Still, for someone trying to make a name for himself, it would seem more effective to do so for his own story, not someone else's. Yes, there's plenty of awful fanfic out there, but there's also a lot of awful pro fiction, so quality has no direct correlation to that question of "originality". So, again, it's an individual thing and what the writer DOES with it.

Can't say more than this, but I will say two things:

1) Some measurements are given from Harry's perspective - i.e., an estimate.
2) Some things are, bluntly put, deliberately not as they seem, but the agency has not been revealed.

But overall, HELLUVA thread and compilation of issues. Well done, you guys.

The few steampunk stories I've read and enjoyed reminded me of this little plum: "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Which describes the "accidental" (i.e., an ill-understood discovery in an alternate timeline) steampunk stories quite well.

Pat Elrod was griping on FB the other day that she needed to come up with a new genre that would put her in the J.K. Rowling class of best-sellerdom, and that vampires and wizards seemed to be overdone.  I suggested to her that the Young Adult market seems to be where the money is, and judging by recent trends, maybe she should try a series about angsty teenage zombies.  She was not enthused.

Has anyone done anything with intelligent zombies that only eat brains of livestock?

Personally, I imagine it's most likely the result of something out there pop-culture-wise at that time that's triggering the formation of certain ideas.

DFRPG / Re: Unofficial DFRPG chatroom

One favor we'd like to ask: if (and we all hope it doesn't happen) there does turn out to be some kind of heated disagreement in there, please don't bring it back in here. That's a partial contributor to the reason that Fred hasn't pushed hard to get the chat feature running on these new (well, new compared to then, anyway) forums (beyond the fact that they just don't seem to WANT to work) - unpleasantness, even in the private chatrooms, had a tendency to spill over onto public chatrooms and eventually the forums. I'm sure everyone will be civilized and polite, but if worse comes to worst and it does go a bit south, we'd just like this to be on record.

Hope it works out well! :)

It wasn't my intention to be impolite or to violate forum rules.

And now that you know where one of the lines is, it'll be even easier to fulfill your intention now. :)
