DF Spoilers / Re: Are Soul gazes inherently subjective?
« on: April 15, 2022, 01:51:33 PM »
The thing is, the world has what the White Council needs to find new wizards already, it's just that the WC is too snobbish/hidebound/stupid(take your pick, they all apply) to use it.

The Paranet is a nationwide(and growing) group of practitioners who were forced to organize precisely because of the WC's inability to police the magical world on the small scale.

All it needs is a few open minded wizards to make checks every 2-3 weeks, treat the lesser talents with some encouragement rather than intimidation and provide some financial backing for a centralized information center and you're good to go. The Paranet has become as big as it is, while being run by renegades such as Elaine and small talents the WC doesn't see as significant unless they go to the dark side. Imagine what it could be under the aegis of the WC.

Yes, the Paranet could be a vital link in a number of ways, not just to identify kids with potential talent before they go bad, but also as a go between with their parents to educate them about the gift that has manifested itself in their child, the good and the dangers.

Yes it would be a crap move, but Marcone has a blindspot for pettiness where Harry is concerned, something Harry can exploit.

Which he would, I can see Harry ridiculing him in public on that very point..

I think a wizard often takes an apprentice, the same way people "often" are married:  yes, it's more common than not; but non-Apprentice'd potential Masters are hardly more eye-raising than eligible singles.

"Happiness in marriage, my dear Eliza is merely a matter of chance.."  Charlotte Lucas to Elizabeth Bennett, Jane Austin.. Oh and Elizabeth's retort was that her notion was not sound..

However I doubt that one can say the same about a master/apprentice relationship.  It would be a foolish master that didn't soul gaze his or her charge before taking him or her on.
Quote
But I am thinking the White Council needs a major educational-reform push; to step away from the master/apprentice model and towards the instructor/class model.
Which is the direction I believe Jim is headed if the speculation/spoilers for the little Maggie spin offs are correct.  As soon or shortly after her talent is discovered she is shipped off to a school like Hog Warts by her father.

But first, they need some way to find the damn proto-wizards (before they literally become "damned").
I think it could be done if most wizards weren't so self absorbed and secretive..

Another thing to consider is time. It seems to me that if you soul gaze someone who's 20 years old, and see that they're idealistic, optimistic and has lots of potential, decide to trust them, you can't fall back on that assessment 10 years later. People change all the time, and you can't gaze them again. You still have a very clear memory of the first gaze, even if they are a completely different person at 30. (which is very likely), so if someone else gazed them and found a dark and cynical soul, you'd unlikely to belive them.
I think it needs a rework in a future book.

People do change especially the young, but that is why when Harry describes his soul gaze with sixteen year old Molly, he describes her possible futures, the trick is judging which future will be the most likely.  Then one has to decide if intervention will help or not.  Harry judged that Molly wasn't too far gone, though in reality given her slip ups that that was a very close call.. The Merlin on the other hand judged that the Korean Kid had gone too far down the tubes and his future was bad no matter what was attempted to redeem him.

Cold steel is the one cold which would bother Harry. Cold air and water no.

Well, if that be the case, leaving steel toilet seat other than being a token pain in the ass, doesn't do much.  Simply because a toilet seat is the cheapest, easiest, and a quick change... I can see Harry taking a look at that and saying, "Really Marcone? Is that the best you can do?"

I think the iron has to actually pierce his skin.  Do that, and it disrupts the Mantle entirely.

Simple contact isn't a problem for the WK -- he is still human, after all!
I agree, there was also the bit at the end of Battle Ground, when Harry was picked up off of Demonreach and they almost killed him treating him for hypothermia, which because he is the Winter Knight he didn't have.

Harry's had so many people wandering around in his head he needs a traffic cop to keep order. It's overused and Butcher needs to give it a rest. But currently he seems not to be disposed that way.

I agree,

Or if you go back to the original Star Trek that gave Jim the idea for Mirror Mirror, to be a strong leader a person needs both sides.. Harry's Id is much more his dark side, he is more assertive and doesn't seem to have much of a conscience.

DF Spoilers / Re: At what age does Talent usually manifest?
« on: April 12, 2022, 06:15:45 PM »

Just because one inherited talent it doesn't follow that the other did, example Harry and Thomas.  Thomas can do some ordinary magical things but he is no and never will be a wizard.

So just because Molly got Charity's talent, doesn't mean her brothers would.

As for Susan, we don't know anything about her family line..

Also supposedly Eb's wife, Margaret's mother, was a vanilla human, so talent can come from the male line even though it usually goes through the female.

As for the rest, I really feel like you're stretching the extent to which Id!Harry is his own entity and not just Dresden being a bit loose in the head and having existential dream talks with himself.

In a sense the Id,is his own entity, lets not forget back in Fool Moon I think it was when we first meet him, he is a very different Harry from the one we know.  I wouldn't be shocked if that is the Harry we meet in Mirror Mirror..

Sitting on a cold stainless steel toilet seat is something the Winter Knight would find uncomfortable.

The cold wouldn't bother Harry, he is the Winter Knight, besides this is the guy who took cold showers for years in his little basement apartment in the dead of winter in Chicago.

And then do a replay in White Knight. Have Lash decide the best way to keep the taste of freedom that she's found is to let the curse burn out the parts that tie her to the Fallen. She gets put into the real world with a darling skull of her own. That is one way of affecting reality.
That is a possibility, but while Bonnie may really be Lash, she isn't Lasciel's Shadow either.
Quote
We have no reason to believe that Michael was wrong with the exception of Harry. In Harry's case the Shadow was supposed to be burned out. This doesn't prove that Michael was mistaken. It's used as a plot point to drive the uncertainty about Harry's allegiance in Small Favor.
Yes, Michael's doubts or claim that it had never happened before was meant to keep us in suspense. However with the gift of Soul Fire from Uriel, all doubts were done away with.  Here is one for you, seemingly in contradiction, what if Lash, then Bonnie are really Lasciel as she was before her fall?
Quote
If you control the mind you control reality. Try this on for size.  If you are  Lash and you are ordered to wreck LC, all a shadow need do is alter the reality of what her host sees and does. Have the host tell Bob to not see it and there you go. And you thought you were ordering steak at the steakhouse.
That wouldn't be a shock since the Shadow of Lasciel convinced Harry's mind that he was seeing a woman named Shelia and if it weren't for Butters convincing Harry that there was no one there, things might have turned out very differently.

Bob: "What do you want me to say Harry, you can't keep run around making loving self-sacrifices unprotected and not expect this to happen. I mean honestly..."

To me that sounds a little bit too ambiguous, Bob may say that but it doesn't mean that Bonnie was a direct result of Lash's sacrifice for Harry.  We know from the earlier books, both in conversations with his Id and with the Shadow before she changed to Lash, that the Id and Lasciel's Shadow were very close and agreed on things that Harry did not as far as cooperating with the Shadow of Lasciel is concerned.

The kitchen fitting are left from Marcone, he knows Harry is the Winter Knight and may have left them deliberately, knowing that Harry would be affected to some degree. The walk in stainless steel fridge makes a lovely Fae trap. It would hamper even Mab.

If so I wonder how long Marcone mused on the regret that the toilets weren’t made from the Bane? There is no proof of this so I have nothing to go on. Unlike Harry.

Are we really sure of that though?  Nothing said about it in the books, and even if it was, it appears that Harry isn't having it changed to accommodate his pizza loving army.  In the over all expenses of the castle remodel job, switching out the fridge, freezer, sink and counter for another material, isn't that much, Harry doesn't need a huge kitchen.  Apparently since there is frozen pizza, Harry has figured out a way to live with a modern freezer.. Because an ice box isn't going to keep pizza frozen very long, yeah maybe since it is still winter in Chicago, but not long term.

Apparently the "bane" or stainless steel doesn't bother Harry, so bane toilet seats is kind of a moot point..

DF Spoilers / Re: Black Court Missing Elders (Newbie first post)
« on: April 11, 2022, 03:22:04 PM »
I don't think "need" enters into it.  The "elder" designation is simply descriptive, of having lived long enough and gathered enough power to stand out even among other powerful blampires.

Mostly, I think, it describes the ones who survived the Stokerpocalypse.

Then none are missing, we have Mavra and we have Drakul...  Unless the Black Court is a lot bigger than we think, do they really need anymore than that?
