Well, I think I finally have a working plot down for my story, but I'm having trouble getting motivated to start it.  Should I just turn off tv and whatnot and type till my fingers fall off, or have an alloted time for it?

Also, regarding chapter names (by which I mean something more endearing than "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", yatta yatta).  I would like to hear opinions on whether you elaborte more with chapter names.

Though it might be part of one of the six you have - I don't see Transformation anywhere.  Like the Alpha's becoming wolves.  That was their own internalized spell.  The hexen wolves needed the belts and the Loup Garou was under a curse.  A curse could conceivably fall under Transformation.

Thing with Curses, I guess some curses can fall under Transformation, like turning someone into a toad.  But then you've got something like the entropy curse where tht would fall under the "God you are totally f*cked" category.

But thank you for mentioning transformations.

I at least try to decide on a nationality for the character first then look up names online that fit.  If I'm not looking for a specific meaning I''ll just pick one at random.

Yeah, I try to do that too.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I just wanted to bounce a list of the types of magic I wanted to utilize in my story and how I define them:

1. Ritual: Rites, Ceremonies, e.t.c.  Specifice words, names, items utilized to perform a spell.

2. Evocation/Summoning: Bringing forth creatures from the Spirit World.  But also summoning of such things as fire, lightning, e.t.c.

3. Thaumaturgy: Utilizing a piece of something to effect the whole.  Tracking spells, voodoo dolls, communication directly into the subjects mind, e.t.c.

4. Necromancy: Using magic to tinker with corpses, ghosts, the dead.

5. Illusion: Using magic to manipulate the five senses of another creature.  An example being veils.

6. Protection: In short, magic used to protect things.  I.E. wards, barriers, e.t.c.

That's all I have so far.

An irksome task.  I have no problem coming up with first names for my characters...it's last names that are a pain.  Anyone have any advice, techniques, resources that they use for this task?

Careful with the Jerkass Facade - too much and readers won't like your character or have patience for him.

Could this idea be possibly slightly similar to one of Barbra Hambly's wizard tales?  I can' think of the series name, sorry.
The neutral good girl sounds similar but not sure bout the wizard.

Never actually heard of that series before.

And thanks for the advice on the facade.

Yeah, I figured as much on that part.  Already got a plan for a love interest for one of them.

I figured I'm put up this proposition and see if anyone knew of any stories that had a similar premise.

To put it simply, it is a novel from two points of view:

* The Lawful Neutral Insufferable Genius Wizard that is Allergic To Routine, but secretly isn't and has a major Jerkass Facade.
* The Neutral Good Girl that is just learning about the magic world and tries to do good as much as possible.

(in case you haven't noticed, I am a troper)

They are NOT love interests, but partners and foils.  The story is their private investiagtions of crimes involving the magical world.

So, what do you think?
