Title: Have we already heard Susan's ghost?
Post by: Cozarkian on November 07, 2017, 03:45:01 PM
Quote from:  Grave Peril, ch. 38, last page
"I love you," I said, or tried to say to Susan. "I love you." She pressed her mouth to mine. I think she was crying. "Hush,"" she said. "Harry. Hush. I love you, too." It was done. There was no more reason to hold on."

Quote from:  Changes, last page in the book
"Hush, now," whispered a woman's voice. It sounded familiar."

I've always thought it was Mab whispering those words in Changes, but if it was Mab, the above is a really big coincidence.

Interesting connection, but I'll stick with Mab having said it.

Then again, it's possible that Mab could have used Susan's shade, but that doesn't make sense with the next 6-months.

I was thinking if it was Susan's shade (which I'm not entirely convinced myself, yet), that perhaps the spirit's purpose is to let Harry know Susan forgives him. That would explain why Susan's shade would be around Harry and whispering comforting words without the need to be directed to do so by Mab.

it certainly sounds more like something Susan would say as opposed to Mab, which what I'd always assumed.

I hadn't thought about it.

I'm not sure that Susan would have left a spirit behind, but it does seem more like Susan than Mab.

My take was that it was his Mom somehow.  In part because I would imagine that Susan's voice would be more than just "seeming familiar."

Kind of like the hand holding in Storm Front near the Sell's house?

I often thought the vague but familar female voice was his mother, Maggie.

Wouldn't it have been mentioned when Harry heard her "recording" during his Soul Gaze with Thomas?

It would have been mentioned if Harry made the connection; he has a tendency not to make connections until the last moment.

True, but I'd have thought he'd have remembered that it sounded familiar.  You have to remember that he's NEVER heard his mom's voice, while Thomas has.

Hurray Susan!

Not to be a downer, but... do Reds leave ghosts? Susan turned before she died.

If they do leave ghosts... well, Harry's going to have an interesting (and short) life, considering he killed literally all of them, and those ghosts might have a grudge...

I will say that I don't think it was Mab. I don't think she would've done anything so nice as comfort him as he died; I'd imagine she was quite pissed. I'd buy Lea, though; she always seemed to care about him, in her way, and she knew about keeping him alive on Demonreach.

Maybe Bonnie? As an amalgam of Kim Delaney, Murphy, and Maggie, her voice would be familiar, but not, you know, readily identifiable, cuz it's a mix.

That is a piece of evidence against it.  However, Harry was in the final moments of his death, so I'm not convinced he had the mental capacity to recognize anything beyond it "seeming familiar" no matter who was speaking.

Lea would be a good choice.

Personally, I don't think it was Susan's "ghost".  I'd guess it was her soul, if anything.

But honestly, I'm just waiting for Raidem to make the Mab/Murphy tie between Mab's presumed hush in Changes and Murphy's hush to Kincaid in SmF.

But for the sake of argument, Sheila/Lash tells Harry to hush in DB.

Well, dang, you probably done toss more fuel on Raidem's fire.

I never had any firm thought on who it was, but I did not think Mab would use that choice or words or seemingly gentle tone when giving a command. I liked the idea of it being Harry's mother, but do not have any evidence that would point to her being able to communicate from beyond the grave. After reading some of the comments I now like the Bonnie idea and her voice being a combination of the voices from the women in Harry's life.

Mab said it, it was into her arms Harry fell.

Mab said it, it was into her arms Harry fell.

And that makes sense.  But that doesn't preclude the possibility of someone else whispering to him.

I think it was Mab though.

It is possible (heck pretty much anyone is possible at this point), but I still contend that it doesn't sound like Mab in either tone (gentle/loving) or word choice.

Okay, this is kind of tongue-in-cheek, but ....

It still doesn't make her any less ... softened ... toward him.

That act was a power play not something that creates tender feelings towards a person.

Agreed.  Mab's grabbing him and depositing him in a cave on DR was and is a power play.

However, saying "Hush ... " could have been done at the same time, by the same person.
