I tried to look this up, but I can't find it...
Can you use free tags on aspects to pay off compels? I thought you could but I may be thinking of a house rule from a previous game I was in.
Here's the example: we are in a cave
We can accept a compel and resist environmental damage from falling debris or pay off the compel to ignore the debris.
There was a previous declaration saying there was an Overhang and there's still a free tag left on it.
Can someone use the free tag to say they took shelter under the overhang instead of paying a FP?
Is this a House-rule or is it a legitimate use of a tag?

I think that's a houserule, or at best it's implied somewhere but not outright stated. There was something similar about spending free invokes on temporary upgrades instead of fate points in an official post, so there is an example of free invokes being used like fate points. But I can't think of anything from the books.

Houserule/Extrapolation.
The margin-scrawl on p 283 talks about paying for temporary powers, and mentions using tags instead of fate points. The (really old) beta discussions I've read indicated that the developers intended tags to be usable like fate points, IIRC.
So, not clearly Rules As Written, but arguably Rules As Intended.
I'd allow it, even without the sidebar; as long as the aspect with the tag made sense of course.
