Title: oneiromancer?
Post by: Yosepi on June 14, 2014, 11:26:48 PM
So I am relatively new to the am a, though a long time Dresden fan. I have a character concept(still looking for a game to use it in) that I am unsure how to go about. The idea is someone who interacts with and maybe even feeds on dreams. The abilities would include inducing sleep, manipulating dreams(and maybe emotions by extension) and illusions(bring dreams to life). As for challenges and draw backs include having hunger stress and maybe their own dreams sleep into the his waking vision i.e. hallucinations. As for the source of the power I am not interested in mortal practitioner...I don't really want to be a law breaker. A scion or a emissary of a Baku or Morpheus(the god)? The child of a dream focused phobophage(the fear things in proven guilty) I really don't know how to make this happen so I am asking for help :P

Sounds like you'd be best off with a scion of Morpheus, or something of the same type.

Powerset wise I'd go for something like this:

Emotional Vampire [-1] (Dreams)
Feeding Dependency [+0] (Dreams)
Incite Emotion [-1] (Lethargy)
Sponsored Magic [-4] (Oneiromancy)

That's a pretty basic set up with some room for improvement through the Incite Effect upgrade tree. Feeding Dependency is in there because it's a RAW power, but I think the most preferred method of dealing with it on these boards is through compels rather than using the given mechanics.

Yeah looking at feeding dependency it is not exactly what I had in mind. I was looking at a bit of folklore and the sandman is one the few characters who's origin is more benevolent then other fairy tails, though some have taken a more heinous route with him through the years. His origin story is that he puts sand in children eyes to give them good dreams and was also known as a story teller. I could go that route. powers looking something like

Sponsored Magic [-4] (Oneiromancy)
World Walker[-2]
Glamours[-2]

Took the glamours cause they seem to fit, as well as world walker cause some parts of the never never could be similar to "dreams" Maybe having the trouble of the "needing" to experience the dreams of others using the sponsored magic or something like that. Would any other powers be usful? the sponsored magic i think would cover sleeping spell and such so that is covered.

Iirc it's canon that dreams take place in the Nevernever. It's how the Nightmare was able to bypass Harry's wards in Grave Peril; it waited until he was asleep and thus technically outside of the wards.

You don't really need glamours if you have Sponsored Magic, unless you want to partition the ability to use illusions from the ability to mess with minds (in which case you can drop Sponsored Magic down to Sponsored Ritual. Personally, I'd drop glamours and take a few stunts to round your character out some more.

Y'know, as the creator of Oneriomancy, i'm no longer satisfied with it. The extra benefit is game/setting-specific, and the Lore bit isn't that good and doesn't really sound as justified. I'd replace it with either an oneiromantic Blood Drinker (Dream Eater), Glamours, or Telepathy.

Perhaps a re-write of Oneiromancy too?
