Title: Cloud-based characters
Post by: Haru on March 29, 2014, 04:05:17 AM
So the title of the other thread gave me an idea that I very much enjoyed. Basically, a bunch of low level talents who get together and store their powers in "the cloud", where they can all access them, if they need them.

This cloud is a shared pocket of the nevernever, that is attached to a magical item, usually a ring or an amulet, I suppose. The characters can then draw onto those powers, whenever they need them. However, no power may be taken twice, so the characters would have to come to an arrangement on how to distribute the powers. On the other hand, by shifting the powers around, they can be quite versatile, and if done right, it can be incredibly powerful.

Just wanted to share, since I will probably not be able to play this any time soon, but if someone likes the idea, go ahead.

Hmm, interesting. I like the idea, but I don't think minor talents have the umph to make magical artifacts. Maybe some sort of bodhisattva?

Item of Power
+1 One-Time buyback
-2-<Highest Cost Power) Modular Abilities (I think that's the name?)
Maybe +1 for the limitation

Alternatively, you could just make them all with artificer builds and give all their enchanted items the -1 so they can be used by other players.

Mechanics aren't really the issue, I just thought this idea was cool and wanted to share it. ;)

Arcane's character in the Semi-Divine Comedy utilizes a similar concept.

His character is the opposite of this idea, I think.

He's one character who can dip in to an infinite pool  to take anything.  This power would be lots of characters with a selection based on a finite pool.  If you limited his flexibility depending on what others have, then it would be a bit closer, I think.

So, for instance, going  in to "reporter" mode might not be possible if someone else in the collective was using those same powers/skills.  It would take lots of co-ordination.  On the other hand, just having an aspect to represent that collective would be good for compels.

Yeah, it was meant as an idea for a group of PCs. Arcane's character is an interesting take on the "store some powers somewhere and use as needed" idea though, so thanks for the link.

I think you could do a campaign with a "minnows rotting together to chase away the shark" theme coupled with the loss of identity or loss of self. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea.
