Title: Defending against WCV powers
Post by: blackstaff67 on May 20, 2013, 01:24:02 PM
What type of Aspects or Maneuvers can you recommend to defend against a WCV's Despair attacks, aside from a potion that might place a maneuver or act as social/mental armor?  I can think of possibly a navel-gaze maneuvers: "Deep in Thought; Reliving past victories;" possibly "Too busy to pay attention."  Any ideas?

Any personal aspects representing mental fortitude or determination would be well suited.
An aspect representing awareness of the nature of the assault could help (in the sense of 'I know what this is; it is not real; it will pass').

"I am vengeance. I am the night! I. Am. BATMAN!"  :P

"Less I bat for the other team, more I don't play ball at all."

Well. That's lust, not despair, but still. It's funny. I think, at least.

My Christian Wizard could use "I Have Looked On The Face Of God". Hard to fill you with despair when you have an unforgettable cause for hope.

As for despair, here's what I can use from my wizard:

REALLY DOES CARE...DEEP DEEP DOWN (There's a reason to hang on, regardless of how bad it seems).

I GOT LOST IN THE NEVERNEVER (I've seen worse than that pathetic hovel)

I used "A Monster with a purpose", "Smiling Certainty", "I am the big bad".

Here are mine:
"Nihilistic Sociopath" (Everything you can do, the character can do in a worse way)
"Cold and empty inside" (The character is emotionless)

Maybe a ritual to give the aspect "Borrow Love" or the like, perhaps requiring that you find a participant who actually has true love for another.

True Love will protect you from the Raiths, and from the Lust that they typically incite.  It will not likely protect you against Despair, unless, perhaps, incited by a (deviant) Raith.

Borrowed Courage then.

Another suite you could use would be something along the lines of "It is the Battle that matters, not the victory". (the idea is to fend off the despair attack by basically saying "Yes, I know that everything is hopeless. That doesn't change what I should do. I accept that doing the right thing will fail, and try anyway." So the despair attack hits, but it can't cripple you).
