Title: Duration of veils
Post by: KnightKD on December 31, 2011, 03:01:32 AM
How long does an evocation based veil last?

The book says something about an exchange, but does this really mean a single "turn" in combat? How about out of combat? Our group thought the exchange might mean when it was tested with an alertness check, but that really puts the average duration of a veil all over the place.

During our last session I used the thaumaturgy durations cause it felt right. +4 shifts or so for 15 minutes.

Veils generally last a scene.  It's discussed in one of the sidebars if I remember correctly.

That said, I don't see a problem with using the time increments table.  If nothing else, it's something to spend a shift or two on.  :)

Are you sure about that duration for an evocation veil? I've checked - and maybe I've missed the sidebar but I can't find it in the evocation section of the rules.

It's the sidebar on YS255.

It actually works both ways, and I've played it both ways depending on the situation. In conflict, where it may be important I'll keep track of exchanges of duration, but other times I'll just give them the whole scene.

Based on the sidebar, I treat a veil that acts as a mutual block as lasting a scene and a veil that doesn't (that the caster can see through perfectly) as requiring additional shifts for duration.
