Title: 2nd Annual Borden DFRPG Awards (2011)
Post by: Katarn on December 28, 2011, 05:56:25 PM
As another year closes, it's time to acknowledge those game/people that have been phenomenal in the DFRPG.

Link to Last Year's Thread (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,25746.0.html)

General Guidelines:
*The nominee must have premiered before 2012- the game must have begun official play before January 1st, 2012.  The PC/NPC/quote must have also been presented before January 1st, 2012.
*If the game/character/individual is nominated and has been around for more than a year, their efforts in 2011 are what should be considered.
*An off-site nominee must be able to verified (aka a well-known game off-site, such as Undertown, can be nominated).
*Nominations begin today (December 28th, 2011)- January 31st 2012.
*Voting will be February 1st-12th 2012, the winners announced the day after.
*If applicable, please include links to character sheets, game threads, etc.

Favorite NPC: A classic villain, murderous Fae, iconic hero, or conflicted anti-hero? As long as it wasn't a Player Character.

Best Plot: The all-important plot hook~ it doesn't have to be unique, just great.

Quote
It'd be for those that give help to others when building characters or cities. Sorta similar to Best Board Contributor, but on a more personal level. They are some of the people I talk to most when trying to suss out a character idea, or stunt/power, or plotline.
Best DFRPG Board Contributor
Quote
for those who have been incredibly helpful, gave enciteful opinions, and has been generally positive on the board in general.

GM of the Year: This Game Master (of 1 or more games) allows for fluid gameplay and a fun, memorable, epic time.
Game of the Year: The best game overall- plot, dialogue, NPCs, combat, through-and-through-the-best.

Hey, it's this again!

I'd like to nominate Team8Mum's Liverpool as Best City.

Will nominate more things soon.

We need more nominations, people. This is your chance to gush about things you like. Don't be afraid to nominate yourself if you think you're the best.

Now, to practice what I preach:

You can probably copy the nominations for best game into best plot and best GM.

Kinda spoiled for choice when it comes to sounding boards. I'm going to think about this a bit more and maybe just nominate everyone.

I'd rather not nominate my own for best PC, NPC, or player. I don't want to play favourites. If I come across someone great in another game, though, I'll put them up.

My best line this year was probably this. (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,22978.msg1236336/topicseen.html#msg1236336) Will nominate more quotes as I come across them.

If nobody else nominates a location I'll toss up some of my Nevernever locations. I don't think they're as good as Liverpool, but I want there to be more than one entry in each category.

Sounding boards:

I'll throw up some options.

Sanctaphrax
Wyvern
Tedronai
Sinker
Silverblaze

All of the above have been playing for a while I think.  All of the above have strong opinions, but can see things from other points of view and many times offer a fresh perspective though perhaps not always a postive one.

I don't PbP or haven't been invited to.  Also my time is already hard to manage, thus I shall abstain from voting upon many things related to those categories.  I think I can vote on quotes though.

I nominate belial666's Elena from ETA for favorite pc. I have lost count of the number of jaw dropping moments I have had reading her posts. Most of her ideas are brilliant but also the sort of thing a group of pcs would be trying to stop in a normal game.

I'll add at least one entry for several categories
*For Favorite NPC, I nominate my own Eustace Delacroix.  He's an eccentric WCV aliased as a doctor
*Best Quote- polkaneverdies, as Stanley Johnson
*Best Plot- Copying the current applicants for Game of the Year
*I'm adding my 2 longtime players, ZMiles and stitchy1503, for players of the year.
*Best Sounding Board- adding Crusher_Bob
*GM of the Year- copying Game of the Year nominees
*Game of the Year- adding Forced to Fight, by ZMiles

More nominations:
UmbraLux and Richard_Chilton for sounding board
Computerking for board contributor (his questions are always interesting)

I read through Spare Character Concepts and Character Request Game, and now I have a nomination for best NPC: Richard Chilton's Jake J (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,22322.msg1290015.html#msg1290015). It was kinda tempting to nominate something of my own, but I've decided that I like Jake J better than anybody I wrote up this year.

Also, I scrounged around a bit and found a decent competitor for Liverpool: Belial666's Hecate Strait Freehold (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,27135.0.html).

And for the Best Quote category, I present a modified Tolkien poem (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,22978.msg1281248.html#msg1281248) that Elena Blackcloak used as part of a ritual.

PS: Has anybody listened to the City On The River podcast? Is there anything there worth nominating?

Another nom for favorite pc is Falar's
Georgia Flanagan
High Concept: Half-Vila Nancy Drew
She was a lot of fun to read in Baltimore high horror

Favorite plot: forced to fight
It was a seemingly simple plot with an incredible amount of layering and detail that went into it.

Favorite npc: General Josef wartberg
This guy's job description apparently includes round up several 18 refresh monsters and warlocks and forge them into a unified front to save your city. Then walk into muspelheim to call out Prince Urt of the fire giants and bend him to your will. After all that he can look forward to getting to fight off a few thousand zombies, demons, and denarians. Not too shabby for a vanilla mortal.

*GM of the Year - Mij he's been running the undertown game for ages now and it's easily one of the best run RPG games I've ever played.

Best Location or City:  San Francisco -Undertown game-

I don't participate enough to really nominate for many of the categories.

Of course I second, third, fourth (whatever) for Mij, GM and the plot for SanFran: Undertown.

I wish there was a "Best Aspect" category because I'd have to mention Enjorous' character Edward Deshain's aspect "Real Life Michael Weston." Very appropriate, useable and most entertaining aspect!

Also, I'd like the "Most likely to cut their own head off with a sword" nomination to Synobal's character Jack Herring. just kidding. well, mostly. ;)

Also, the OP for this thread for most helpful/best sounding board. Whenever I have a question I find it has already been answered or there is a resource thread that helps. Thanks!

I think thats it. Until later when I remember what else I was going to add.

Weird and slightly pointless question: what time zone do these awards operate in? Where I am, there's about 5.5 hours left before nominating ends and voting starts.

So...when can we vote?

Lol forgot about the issue of timezones (despite the fact I work with them a lot....)  Let's say midnight, Pacific time is the cutoff.  Then voting can begin.

Hi.  I didn't really look at this thread much before the crash - mostly because I thought it was centred on the games on this board.  That, and this Christmas some chaos started that is still evolving (I'm hoping to get the worst of it sorted out by the week of Feb 10th) and that's consumed a lot of my free time.

Which means that I didn't notice the extra categories.

Let me say that it's an honour to be nominated for those NPCs.

And a question - when does voting close? I'll need a while to wade through all the nominations for all the categories and I'm not sure when I can find that time.

Best Sounding Board: It's very close (if this keeps up through the next year, we might benefit from a weighted ballot), but if pressed to it, I'd have to say UmbraLux

I'm flattered, thanks.  Must say I hadn't planned on voting...I don't follow any of board's games - which seem to cover the majority of the categories.  However I'd like to vote 'everyone not me'!  I err all too often.   :-[  Besides, there are a lot of interesting viewpoints and thought provoking posts on the forum.  Shouldn't have to narrow it to one individual!

To be perfectly honest, it's the interaction, discussion, and creative energy I enjoy.  That stems from the community!

Yeah, I actually flipped a coin to decide my final vote for Best Sounding Board.

I do that a lot when I feel indecisive, because when the coin gives me the wrong answer it helps me realize what I actually think. Funny how that works.

Anyway...we need more votes! I'll post to a few game threads to tell people about this.

Still reading games, so I can't tell you any more of my votes yet.

GM: Mij

If I could, I'd vote Fyr's own Tory Gozen as my favorite PC. Creative and always entertaining to watch.
Though I might award Jack the "Suicide by Ghoul" nomination rather than "Most Likely to Decapitate Self." Or maybe, "Suicide by C4." or "Suicide by Sorceror." You get the picture. ;)

Voting's still open?

I thought it was going to end on the fifth.

Whatever. I have a question for the thread.

What can we do to get more people to vote?

Heh, without getting political... I think that is the million dollar question the whole world over.  Good luck with that.

About all you can really do is tell you're players to vote for you and beg the rest of us to change our minds. ;)

I extended it due to a slow start-up.  It ends the 12th.

Advertise in your games' threads.  All the nominees got a PM that they were up for the awards.

I'm not really looking for votes for me, here. I'm already winning every category that I think I deserve a win in.

Mostly I want the location tie broken, preferably in Liverpool's favour. And I'd like to see some more game/gm votes on general principles. Preferably from unbiased observers.

I guess I'll just advertise more.

I'll vote for ZMiles for Player of the Year, and Elena/Belial666 for Best Quote.

I think I'll abstain from voting for the others.

Since around Christmas my life has been, well, chaotic.  A relative had a health issue that is more or resolved now.

While I'm grateful to be nominated, I haven't had the time to look through all the nominations.  Not even just the ones in the categories that I'm nominated in.  Since I haven't seen all the nominee's I don't think it's fair to vote - not even for myself as there might be someone better out there.

So I'm voting not to vote while congratulating everyone who was nominated.

Awesome. I like getting prizes.

Not sure my game deserved the tied categories, but hey. The people have spoken.

Congratulations to everyone who won and thanks to everyone who voted.

PS: I'm actually quite surprised by the unanimous verdict in the contributor category. I guess I'm more popular than I thought.

In some ways I'm surprised that anti-Dresden Jake J was so popular.

All I can say is thanks to everyone who enjoyed that character.

I Have finally dragged my self out from under a whole pile of mess at work which has kept me ridiculously busy and got chance to look at this.

Thanks for the vote of confidence in Hangover city.
I promise I will get it all finished and written down as soon as work settles down again (some time after april 1st according to the current funding projections).

For those in the uk, I will be running games based in the city at both Con-quest in Derby and Ukgamesexpo in Birmingham. Hope to see some of you there.

Hey, you're alive.

If I was in the UK, I'd try and make it to those conventions. But I'm in Ottawa, so that's not really feasible.

Looking forward to april.
