Title: Character Request Game
Post by: Sanctaphrax on September 05, 2011, 01:18:12 AM
I kinda feel like making some characters, but I don't have very many good ideas for them. So I'm asking for your help, people of the DFRPG forum.

Give me at least three of the following:

Templates
Stunts
Powers
Aspects
Primary Skills

And I'll make a character with those three (or more) things. Feel free to pick more than one thing from a category for a single request.

If you need ideas, the Resources Board is your friend.

Here is an idea.

An Ectomancer who lost control and now has multiple spirits, some benevolent, some sadistic possessing him. While he has come to a sort of an arrangement to retain primary control of his body, these spirits do occasionally act out and do there own thing.

Put that into the format I set out, please.

A concept like that requires more work than I'm looking for right now. I might even need to make custom powers.

Here you go...

Template:  Changeling
Stunts
Powers:  Cloak of Shadows
Aspects:  Iron, My Boon and Bane; Slipping into Darkness
Primary Skills:  Craftmanship

That what you're looking for?

Important Skills: Investigation, Contacts, Rapport, Deceit
Stunts: Good cop: In good-cop-bad-cop, I'm the good cop. Roll Rapport for Interrogation
Powers: In addition to required: Inhuman Strength and Toughness, Claws

Figured his human form would be the information gatherer while his wereform would be for self-defense, in case the person he's investigating is a supernatural baddie.

I beleive there was a thread about odd character ideas or Op chracter ideas or something.  I mentioned a "good guy" denarian, a were coyote mechanic etc.

You (Sanctaphrax) asked permisson to make them.  I'm not having any luck with the search function or I'd supply a link.

Long story short if you can find hte thread, feel free to write up any character idea I listed.

Thanks, everyone. This should keep me busy for a while.

I admit that I had expected less complete sketches, but I'm not complaining.

I had totally forgotten about that old thread, but a bit of searching got me Silverblaze's post. I'll be getting to those once I've finished the requests on this thread.

Paul Kowalski (Up To Your Waist)

High Concept: Changeling "Freedom Fighter"
Trouble Aspect: Slipping Into Darkness
Other Aspects: Iron, My Boon And Bane; Winter Must Be Destroyed; Conviction Is A Virtue, Demolitions Expert
Skills:
Great: Craftsmanship
Good: Stealth, Athletics
Fair: Guns, Burglary, Discipline, Deceit
Average: Alertness, Contacts, Endurance, Conviction, Survival, Lore, Scholarship
Stunts:
Demolitions Training (Craftsmanship): Set explosives with Craftsmanship.

Powers:
Cloak Of Shadows [-1]
Inhuman Speed [-2]
Total Refresh Cost:

Refresh Total:

Paul Kowalski is one of Winter's most dedicated foes, although many naive people would assume that he was a part of that court.

He is a changeling, with a dead mortal mother and a Winter-aligned faerie father of uncertain identity. As a child, he was part of a group of changelings that was tormented and abused by Maeve.

He was never able to retaliate directly, but he nonetheless nursed a deep grudge against the entire Winter Court. When he grew up, he encountered a demon who offered to help him. He accepted, and was hidden in Hell far away from Winter's reach. In exchange, he gave the demon his Name, and accepted training in warfare from demonic teachers.

Once more or less safe, he began a guerrilla campaign against Winter. He built bombs covered with iron nails and slipped them into faerie territory. He's been doing that for years now, and he's amassed an impressive body count.

He's happy about that, but he's getting the distinct impression that his demonic "benefactor" is corrupting him somehow. Of course, his cold-blooded slaughter of Winter fey couldn't possibly be a part of that...

Theodore is the nicer half of St. Mark's Investigations, the only supernatural private investigator's firm in New York. He's an incredibly sweet, nice, harmless guy. Everyone knows him, and nobody minds when he comes around to ask a few questions.

He's also a werebear. When in his beast form, he looks a bit like a giant teddy bear, no more frightening than a stuffed animal. But that's just his appearance. In truth, his bear form is strong enough and lethal enough to tear people apart with ease.

Theodore doesn't like to fight, though, so he leaves that stuff to his partner John London. London's a lot less nice than Theodore.

Richard was once an ordinary, rather boring rich kid. He did not know that his grandmother was a wizard of the White Council, and his modest magical talent never blossomed. Then he went on vacation to Mexico, got turned by the Red Court noble Lady Sarah, and was forced to provide the Red Court with as much information and money as possible from his family.

This had the odd effect of awakening his magical talents in a rather vampiric way: Richard learned how to become a bat. By using this along with some inner strength that he never knew he had, Richard was able to become more than just a piece in Lady Sarah's game.

Now, he's a player.

But not the most skilled one. He's still struggling desperately to maintain his survival, his secrecy and his free will. If grandma finds out what he is, he's in serious trouble. If Sarah ever gets a further hold on him, he's in worse trouble. So he's in danger from all sides, and very scared.

I like the werebat.

Wonder how his shapechanging would be affected by being turned into a full RCV. Could maybe score some refresh with a catch.  Only one point would matter in this case, but the catch could be sound (high frequency, sonic, very loud, etc.) or sunlight.  The catch; in hte case of sunlight; simply nullifying the recovery, not causing damage.

No idea how full transformation would affect his shapeshifting.

I think I might give the cult leader guy there a 2 refresh discount on his second sponsored magic. It seems only fair.

On the other hand, he's going to be negative refresh anyway. So I suppose I might as well play it by the RAW.

Agreed on the might.  I'd give the discount if I was also stripping the focus / enchanted item slots from one of them; not otherwise.  Which depends on what sort of caster (s)he ends up being, really.

I got inspired by the dedresdenizing thread: create 2 characters with the (mostly) same set of aspects who are as different as possible. You've got the High concept free to use as you like, as well as the template. Level is Submerged, bonus points if you link them in the guest stories.

Trouble: that old gang of mine
Aspects: lies my parents told me, I've got you under my skin, are you now or have you ever been, the house always wins

Wow, this is a lot of requests. I wonder how many of these will get used? And what will they be used for, if they are used?

Anyway, here's the backstory of Robert Falls:

When Robert Falls was just a little boy, his father worked for the US military as an engineer working on newer and better nukes.

This was all well and good, until a nuclear test invoked the ire of a powerful Summer noble. Apparently nukes devastate the Nevernever as well as the physical world. The Nevernever behind any given nuke blast area is always a nasty place called The Wasteland.

The Summer noble named Miraz the Cat had lost his kingdom to a nuclear test, and he demanded that twenty children be given to him in exchange.

Dr Falls gave up his child, in the end. A clued-in General paid him well for that.

Robert Falls and the other nineteen children were unceremoniously dumped into The Wasteland by Miraz. This was considered to be a suitable revenge.

There they were forced to scavenge for their lives among the communities of desperate people who, in the aftermath of nuclear blasts, had been sucked into The Wasteland through the damaged veil between worlds.

Unlike most, Robert thrived in The Wasteland. He grew strong there. But is he strong enough to enforce his belief in justice on the world around him? Probably not.

On the upside, he managed to outlive Miraz. So he doesn't have to be afraid of further retribution anymore.

Mine are experiments, they will likely never be used. I thought about putting the concept up for everyone to create as many different characters from the same aspects as possible, but I thought you already made this thread, it wouldn't need extra.

Same goes for Samael, actually.

Thanks, Silverblaze.

Now for, Gideon Glass's backstory.

Gideon Glass was a university student once, studying for a degree in ecology and crusading on behalf of the environment. But one day a protest went way too far, some people got killed, and Gideon ended up wanted by the police.

He knew that he had no chance of escaping justice. He also knew that a criminal record would ruin his life. So, in a moment of short-sighted (and massively drunken) determination, he decided to sacrifice his life in a grand act of protest. He would burn himself alive in front of the local police station.

For some reason, a force called the Phoenix took an interest in Gideon at that point. It brought him back to life and gave him power. Gideon immediately used that power (and the fact that he was legally dead) to escape the police and return to his crusade.

But he needed help. So he tried to find the Phoenix again. Unfortunately, what he found was a demon lord impersonating the Phoenix. Said demon lord gave him even more power, and helped him start a cult.

Gideon wants to use his cult to protect the environment. But his sponsors have other ideas, and his debt is so great that they essentially own him.

It's "Phoenix", not "Pheonix".  ;D

Mechanically, his Mythic Recovery should be priced at about +4 catch. It won't help him during a fight with quick recovery and it won't give him immunity to exhaustion/sleep because he can't be immolated all the time (he's not immune to fire). Also, his regaining of consequences essentially requires a small ritual.
Title: Re: Character Request Game
Post by: Sanctaphrax on September 21, 2011, 06:23:52 AM
Thanks for pointing out the typo. It's fixed now.

Dunno about the catch. I figure a 7-shift fire evocation would be enough to trigger his recovery.

Losing the Shrug Off trapping is probably worth a bit more than 1 refresh.
Losing the tirelessness trapping is probably worth about 1 refresh.
The restriction on his between-scenes healing is probably worth less than 1 refresh.

So maybe +3?

Eh, it doesn't matter anyway.

Boats have been disappearing from the sea around here recently. Judging by their last radio broadcasts, the boats were attacked by something big and nasty with a lot of tentacles.

The local Warden did a bit of divination, worked out what was behind the attacks. It's a were-sharktopus. That is, it's an ordinary person who's learned how to turn into a real monster.

The were-sharktopus doesn't seem to have a motive. Personally, I think it just gets off on the idea of being a B-movie-style monster. But hey, what do I know?

We've been trying to hunt the monster down, but we've had no luck so far. We can't catch it at sea, and we can't work out who its human form is.

It's got to be someone around this town.

Ghosts are not normally big on political organization, but there are a few rulers among them. Perhaps the most powerful of those rulers is King Anaxamander I, the ghost of a powerful Greek wizard who died before the birth of Christ.

About 20 years ago, Anaxamander felt the need for an heir. So he manifested himself physically and impregnated a cultist of his. She bore a son, who was named Anaxamander II.

Anaxamander II was groomed for leadership from birth, with mixed success. The child grew up to be an excellent leader and a reliable ambassador. But he wasn't the badass mage-warrior-general that his father had hoped for. His supernatural abilities were limited to a sort of weak divination, looking into the ghosts of memories past. And he was not at all good at fighting.

The main reason for this is that he was not born with any interest in fighting. He's a lonely young man without any violent ambitions. His main interests video games, geek culture, and playing elaborate tricks on people he dislikes.

Nonetheless, he is trying to become what his father expects. He's cultivated a real talent for harsh, tyrannical leadership. He's learned how to trick his enemies into devious traps. He's drilled his father's war ghosts into a solid fighting force. And he knows how to lead that force in battle, even if he personally couldn't win a salad fight.

Fortunately, he'll never need to win a salad fight himself. He's got Number One, the ghost of a powerful Warden Of The White Council and his father's most powerful minion, to back him up. Number One acts as Anaxamander's bodyguard and butler. He's a bit like a more violent ghostly wizard Jeeves.

The being that calls itself Sarah Brown is not a human being. It is a changeling, born of a fetch mother and a human father.

Once, there was a man who sold his firstborn child to Queen Mab. But after making the pact, he refused to have any children. So Mab sent a fetch to rape him. Nine months later, a baby was born. The father had killed himself long before, out of trauma from being raped and guilt from having sent a child into fey ownership.

The baby was raised by mortals in an orphanage, with her fetch mother watching the whole time. Every midwinter, her mother would take her back to Arctis Tor for training in social skills and mental toughness. After about 18 years of this, the girl was a self-loathing mess with severe identity issues. She was hopeless and totally alienated. She was an excellent tool.

On the midwinter day of her 19th year, the girl was taken to see Queen Mab. Mab essentially forced her to make most, but not quite all, of her Choice. Just enough of her humanity remained for her to act as something other than an extension of the Winter Queen. This meant that she could avoid fey limitations, which made her very useful.

The girl has been acting as an infiltrator on behalf of Queen Mab for a little over a decade. She's grown good at it, developing her self control and her ability to manipulate people to truly impressive levels. This has done precisely nothing to improve her mental health.

However, the girl might be changing. Her most recent fake identity, that of a circus acrobat named Sarah Brown, has lasted over a year. In that time, she's grown to like being Sarah Brown. She has friends and a place in the world and even an affectionate nickname of "Squirrel". It's all fake, of course, but you can't have everything.

Here is an idea.

An Ectomancer who lost control and now has multiple spirits, some benevolent, some sadistic possessing him. While he has come to a sort of an arrangement to retain primary control of his body, these spirits do occasionally act out and do there own thing.
I'm so making that my next character.

Thanks, wyvern.

Now, Ayyapan's backstory:

Ayyapan Aadidev was born into the priest caste in India back when caste was a big deal. He had magic in his blood, and so became a wizard. He used his magic to make himself into a messiah of sorts, creating magical "miracles". This worked pretty well for a while, until a rival priest decided to have him killed. A certain faerie offered to save his life, in exchange for a large chunk of his magical power. He accepted.

The faerie took him through the Nevernever, and Ayyapan ended up in America. Hindu spiritual fakery turned out to be less than lucrative in a Christian country, so he became a stage magician. Because his powers had been curtailed by his deal with the faerie, he had to do it the old-fashioned way. He found the job to his liking, and he's been doing it ever since.

Which means that he's been on stage for almost a century. That's caused some changes in his personality, and it often seems like his stage persona is his real self. Which means that he fits in well with the faeries that he hangs out with.

PS: The court of his fey "friends" is deliberately unclear. Make it up for yourself.
PPS: The deal with the fey means that Ayyapan is substantially weaker than most wizards his age.

Never thought of the Indian Mystic angle or Faerie bargains. That's neat.

The Top Hat with the Rabbit is a good touch.  ;D

This definitely is generating ideas for when I will finally get to play in a Las Vegas game.

I LOVE that Aspect, Always on Stage. That would cause SOOO much grief. He's always on stage in that he plays a character, his Magician "Persona"(Which many Magicians do) and He's Always on Stage performing for charity and stuff.  Great excuse to get him into a strange place.

It also kinda makes me laugh that for a Vegas Magician he has no Resources skill meaning he either hasn't made it big OR his career is a Zero-Sum game because of the stupid Faeries skimming off the top.

My personal interpretation of the concept had a backstory connection  to Houdini to steep the guy in classic Magic and for the historical irony that a Wizard was hanging around one of the world's biggest Skeptics.

Do magicians in Vegas make a lot of money? I didn't think it was such a profitable occupation. Well, the fey moocher explanation would work if needed.

Could we give you a picture to interpret and build as a character rather than a description? It would be interesting to see how different people would build different characters based on the same picture. The picture I'm currently interested in is this;

But I'd rather not have this thread be it. The "rules" of this thread are pretty strict.

Sanctaphrax, please do not forget the thread about crazy concepts.  I'd really like to see your interpreteation of some of my strange ideas on there.

You already mentioned you'd get to them after requests were handled.  I just know older threads are often forgotten due to out of sight/out of mind mentality.

Kaku Xu backstory:

Where He Came From: Lies My Parents Told Me

Kaku isn't human. He's one of a monster species so rare it has no name. Members of his species absorb the parts of other creatures in an effort to become perfect.

Kaku was born in the Nevernever, and took on human form after eating his first meal: a human kidney. He would likely have grown to become just another monster, had not his parents been killed by a pair of married human monster hunters from an obscure Japanese group dedicated to the protection of mankind.

The monster hunters didn't have the heart to kill a monster that looked like a baby, and somehow they got it into their heads that they could raise him to be human. So they tried to do that, concealing all evidence of his real nature as he grew up.

What Shaped Him: I've Got You Under My Skin

The attempt to raise Kaku as a human almost worked. But when he was 15, he witnessed a car accident in which a young street racer was killed. Looking at the corpse, Kaku felt an irresistible urge to eat it. He ended up consuming the street racer's heart.

Suddenly, Kaku was an amazing driver and mechanic. The sudden rush of competence and power that came from eating someone's heart was an important formative experience for him.

His First Adventure: Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been

Kaku ended up looking for another person to eat part of. He got his chance when an assassin tried to kill his father and got a sword to the face for his trouble. Kaku snuck out to the assassin's grave, dug him up, and ate the eyes.

Unfortunately, Kaku's adoptive parents noticed. They alerted the organization they belonged to, which decided that he had reverted to the ways of his species and that he should be killed. But his parents couldn't bear to see him die, so they told him everything before smuggling him out of the country.

This left Kaku with some severe identity issues and a belief that he was a monster. It also left him with no family after the organization killed his parents for their "treason", and a set of highly capable killers looking for him.

Who He Crossed The Path Of: The House Always Wins

Guided by a belief that he was an irredeemable monster, Kaku decided to embrace his nature. He began hunting people he considered to be truly skilled in some way, including a musical prodigy, some Olympic athletes, the CEO of a major corporation, and a Nobel-prizewinning chemist.

In this way, Kaku became superhuman. He now possesses a varied set of competencies greater than that of any human alive.

He's grown fond of challenging people to contests of skill, and beating them effortlessly. It's childish, but so is he.

A long record of doing this has given Kaku a rep. His current false identity, Hubert House, is well known for "always winning".

This reputation will probably lead assassins to his door, but he hasn't quite twigged to the fact that he's being hunted  by his old gang.

Gawain De Fosse backstory:

Where He Came From: Lies My Parents Told Me

Gawain was raised in what is best described as a brothel for fey. Like all the children there, he was a changeling. And like all the children there, he had a strange childhood filled with bizarre pranks and misinformation. This gave him some very strange ideas about the world.

For example, it made him think that his name was normal.

What Shaped Him: I've Got You Under My Skin

Gawain grew up to be a good changeling, clever and deceitful. Among the children of the fey brothel, he was something of a leader. Which meant that when he was 16, he was the one chosen to represent them at a meeting with Queen Titania.

He fell in love at first sight with her. To proclaim this fact to the world, he got a huge tattoo on his back with her name and picture. But his attempts to romance her went nowhere. Eventually he worked out that the only way he was going to get her was to become the Summer Knight. And for that, he'd need to be someone who mattered.

His First Adventure: Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been

So Gawain went to Vegas to seek his fortune. He made a lot of money cheating at poker with his Glamours. Eventually, he made enough money to buy a share in a casino for himself.

When he did this, he finally Chose mortality. As he Chose, he said "I am not a faerie and I never was one either".

Though he tried to present it as an expression of his own character, his Choice was probably just an effort to qualify himself for the job of Summer Knight.

Who He Crossed The Path Of: The House Always Wins

Things went well for Gawain once he got part of a casino. He made more and more money, until he was able to buy out the other shareholders and and assume sole control. He became part of the local high society, hanging out with celebs and hosting extravagant parties. This is all part of an attempt to attract Titania's attention; one that hasn't really come close to success yet.

Unfortunately, Gawain isn't very able to pursue Summer Knight-dom much further right now. This is because the other children from the fey brothel, seeing his success, have started mooching off of him and expecting him to solve all of their problems. He feels obligated to help them.

So, Haru, what do you think? Different enough from one another?

PS: Just saw the note in the request saying that both should be Submerged. Oops. Hope it doesn't bother you.

I really like what you've done there, and yes, they are different enough, very much so. Doesn't matter that Kaku isn't submerged, he is awesome this way. Don't get me wrong, Gawain is great as well, but when you have to compete against a character like Kaku, you are going to have a hard time. Still, I think he would be fun to play, too.

Note: When the mask is possessing someone, it still has access to all of its physical powers.

Backstory:

Long ago, Loki made a daring attempt to escape his eternal prison. His method was to peel off his own face as part of a magical ritual designed to create a powerful creature called The Mask Of Loki that would free him from his torment.

The ritual worked, but unfortunately for Loki his creation showed no interest in freeing him. It took the considerable fragment of divine power that Loki had given it and ran.

The Mask had no real desires of its own, so it takes those of others. It's normal method is to possess a random passerby and then spend about a year fulfilling all of that passerby's most secret desires and most random impulses.

Fortunately for the world, the Knights Of The Cross put a stop to that about 500 years ago. They cut it to pieces and scattered the pieces across the world.

Unfortunately for the world, The Mask seems to have recovered. Or perhaps been recreated, Loki isn't known for intelligent planning.

Backstories:

Calvin Davenport was an ordinary poor kid, once. Because he was small and weak and had a big mouth, he had to be pretty sneaky just to get by. But that wasn't a problem for him.

Calvin's problem was that he kept talking back to his teachers at school. He was fairly intelligent and not yet a violent person, but he was so annoying that he ended up expelled multiple times from various schools. He simply would not shut up.

So Calvin dropped out of school as soon as he could get away from his parents. Living on his own, he soon turned to crime to make ends meet. It was during his time as a petty criminal that Calvin acquired his deep and abiding respect for guns. To him, a gun was the purest and most useful form of power.

This fascination with firearms lead Calvin into the mafia. He became a hitman for them, and did his job very well. But he couldn't deal with the fact that in the mafia there were people who had authority over him. After he mouthed off to them one too many times, they had him shot and tossed into a river.

While Calvin lay dead in that river, Death appeared to him. Death, apparently, had need of someone like Calvin. Someone who could discreetly kill the things that Death needed dead. Death offered Calvin a job and Calvin accepted before Death had time to finish his sentence.

Calvin came back to life with a rifle in his hand and magic in his blood. It took him about a week to completely exterminate the mafia he had once worked for. Once that was done, Calvin began a new life as Death's hitman.

Calvin's been doing his job for a couple of years now, and he's enjoyed it the whole time. Death's authority is usually so distant that Calvin doesn't even notice it. But sometimes Calvin feels the heavy hand of Death on his shoulder. And when he does, he always wonders what would happen if he were to turn his all-killing rifle on the one who gave it to him.

Julio Toller's mother was a powerful wizard and one of the best oracles on the Council. She took her son as her apprentice and taught him a great deal. This went well for a while, but it completely fell apart on the autumn equinox of Julio's 15th year.

On that day, Julio's mother was attempting a highly ambitious divination spell that would, in theory, allow her to see the precise location and bearer of every Blackened Denarius on the planet using a single Denarius as a symbolic link. The spell represented a solid two years of work for her, and it really should have worked.

But Julio messed it all up. He begged his mother to let him help her with the casting of the ritual, and after she finally agreed he botched the spell four-fifths of the way through. The resulting fallout killed his mother and everyone else within approximately five kilometers, except for Julio. He survived because his mother spent her Death Curse shielding him.

Everyone Julio had ever known was dead, and it was his fault. The resulting trauma caused him to lose most of his spellcasting powers.

For about a decade after that, Julio was a broken shell of a man. But then a friend of his mother's ran into him at a bar, and recognized him. His mother's friend more or less knew the story already, thanks to his own divinations, and he had once been quite angry at Julio for his incompetence. But ten years does a lot to dampen emotions, and eventually anger turned to pity.

Julio's mother's friend set Julio up with a clued-in therapist who helped Julio past most of his issues. Julio left therapy functional, but feeling as though he had a huge debt to repay to society for his sins.

In the end, Julio chose to repay society by enforcing its laws. He became a martial artist and trained with single-minded focus. He reawakened his spellcasting as best he could, and discovered that he could still Craft rather well even if the quick release of power was now beyond him. After about five years, Julio was essentially Batman.

But less awesome. Unlike Batman, Julio is poor and not a great detective. He has logistical difficulties up to his neck. He can fight and he can scare and he has amazing gadgets, but he's nonetheless found that fighting evil is really bloody hard. Most nights he just sits around in alleys hoping for a mugging.

Still, he's been successful enough to become a local cult figure. And he's actually dealt with a fair number of criminals and monsters.

PS: Edited Julio's sheet a bit to add a couple of aspects, fix a typo or two, and to add Wizard's Constitution.

Esmeralda Galloway is the heir to the powerful Galloway family. Like her father, her mother, both of her grandfathers, both of her grandmothers, etc, Esmeralda is a Wizard Of The White Council. She's a Warden, too, which is only fitting. She has a small trust fund and plenty of magical power. Every advantage has been given to her.

Her life should be easy. It's not. Here's why:

Esmeralda was always a tomboy. When she was young, she wanted to be a knight. Her parents approved, thinking she'd make a good Warden. And so when she was 16 years old, they sent her to be trained by Luccio.

At the Warden training camp, Esmeralda made some very good friends. The closest of her new friends were the ones playing in the role-playing games she GM'd. Even after training was over, that gaming group stuck together. They eventually started calling themselves the Round Table Order. This was a joke for most of them, but Esmeralda was at least partly serious about it. She was a real live knight.

This was fun and harmless until the Vampire War began. The Round Table Order was quickly forced to become a serious fighting team. Which it did quite well, until the entire Order ended up being routed by a single summoned Outsider. Esmeralda and her friends ran, but they couldn't get away.

Just when the monster caught up and all hope seemed lost, Esmeralda heard a voice. The voice of Uriel, to be precise. Uriel ordered her to turn and fight, and she did. Somehow, she won.

That experience changed Esmeralda's life. Suddenly, she had faith and purpose and a desire to change everything. She gathered up the Order and told them that it was time to do something good for the world. Nobody had the guts to gainsay her.

But even after the Vampire War and a direct visitation from an Archangel, life wasn't done messing with Esmeralda. After a couple of awkward romantic affairs, Esmeralda realized that a) she was probably attracted to women and b) she might be happier as a man.

Seeking guidance, she went to her parents. They said,

"Very minor perversions, dear. It's all fine by us, as long as you give us some grandkids.

Oh, and your uncle can probably teach you how to change your gender. He's a pretty accomplished shapechanger, you know."

This really pissed her off. An angry rejection would have been better than this casual dismissal. More-or-less just to spite them, she decided to become involved in the gay rights movement. They couldn't understand this decision, being as they were accustomed to totally ignoring mortal law. Which was by way of being the point.

Now Esmeralda has waaaay too much on her plate. She has a vaguely-defined mission from God to lead her Order on, a war to fight, and a form of equality to fight for. If this keeps up, she'll probably burn out.

Crazy ideas of Silverblaze:

1.Werecoyote Mechanic (based on a novel)
2. red court infected/white court virgin - trying to avoid falling either way.
3. somesort of abomination White Wolf style (Underworld for those who haven't played White Wolf WoD -basically a Vampire Werewolf.
4. Descendent of Judas trying to uncurse his line, sort of a denarian trying to attain redemption by fighting denarians and fleeing Knights of the Cross.
5. Wereskunk bodyguard (played this) was fun, still is.
6. I think master Chief from Halo fame or Dante from Devil May Cry may be intersting to see stated, but not to play.
7. mage who gets sponsored magic from magical parasites within own body...sponsor debt is handled like a hunger track for vampires.  Uses blood magic primarily, and blood flavored evocation (instead of water...blood...flame = boiling blood bolts and such.
8. Winter Werewolf...with cold based breath weapon
9. something like a gorgon (medusae)

Sentient golem, any type...flesh (frankenstein), stone, metal (any ) though iron or steel would be awesome...can you say catch for all fae?

Gargoyle, roosts on churches, might have holy powers...turns to stone during the day..still stone at night, but is now animate...could alternatlively be scaled and flesh/bone. Maybe human by say instead.

Ogreball (http://dfrpg-resources.wikispaces.com/Ogreball) ball:

You've created an NPC who does nothing, and does it with incredible finesse, which was my vision for it in the first place. I'd give it a metric crapload of armor that only gives its full value when it's curled up. But you've managed to get similar results with what you've got, so it's not like you did it wrong. Thanks.

I had an idea for a team of 5 PC's who each have a ring that grants them channeling corresponding to the elements fire, water, earth, air, and spirit. They are otherwise mortal. And when they combined their powers they can kind of summon some sort of representation of earth's power.

Pretty easy honestly.  The rings would basically just need channeling (element a,b,c,d,e) and ritual (summoning).  Then create a superman type guy who has a kryptonite in the form of pollution, that they summon.  Technically since you have 3 casters working on the same ritual it can be done faster and more succesfully.

Glad you like it, Repthath.

I kinda wanted to make the pangolin your way with massive armour, but the rules don't support that option very well.

Forty years ago, Alicia Chapman was a member of a lycanthrope gang. Unfortunately for her, her gang ended up trying to fight the Red Court over a matter of territory. As one might expect, Alicia's gang was wiped out.

When it was over, Alicia was captured and taken to the leader of the vampires. Said leader was a curious sort who wanted to know what a Turned lycanthrope would be like. He got his answer when Alicia tore him in half.

At that point, Alicia was all alone in the world. Her friends and family were all dead, and she was some sort of unnatural monster that the world had never seen before. She soon found that an awful lot of people wanted to kill her over that.

So she ran off and hid in the wilderness. Those who chased her, she killed. Eventually, she made a pretty comfortable home for herself and secured her territory well enough that she didn't have to worry about intruders.

And that's how she's lived for the past four decades. Sitting alone in the wild. Now she's old and tired and mostly just wants to be left alone while she dies, but her instincts won't let her.

PS: Quite happy with some parts of Alicia's mechanical side. She's a dangerous opponent who becomes much more so when the moon is full, and she has a pretty interesting trick with Blood Drinker + Recovery + Limitless Appetite.

Backstory:

Rupert Rimmer was a rising star in the White Council once. But then he was dragged into helping a Warden take down a powerful warlock biomancer. When the warlock realized he was doomed (about one second after the Warden's sword went through his stomach), he cast a death curse that removed the magical powers of both Rupert and the Warden.

Without his magic, Rupert wasn't anyone special anymore. He was just another guy. This was not something he could accept. And as long as he had his mind, he knew that he could find a way to become a great man again.

So he got to work. He searched the world for a way to retrieve his powers. What he found taught him that the only practical option was the assistance of a supernatural heavyweight. So he went looking for those. Eventually he found one in the notes of the warlock who took his powers. The warlock had been trying to create/summon some sort of virus/parasite/creature that he called "the Ultimate Life Form".

So Rupert took the warlock's notes, and with the help of his wizard friends created/summoned the Ultimate Life Form into his own body. This gave him some serious magical power, but the side effects have not been pleasant...and the higher-ups in the Council are not happy with the actions of him and his friends.

Ah, well. He still has his mind. He'll find a way to make this work. Having a thing that scares the Senior Council inside his body must have upsides.

Net was down for a few days.

These look pretty cool to me.

The werevampire is pretty nasty.  Thats the sort of thing I was looking for, I would like to think some mid powered groups would have a wee bit of trouble with that one.

Thanks.

I haven't run the numbers, but I think that the werevampire could be a tough fight for a high-level group too if it had a chance to use its Blood Drinker-based recovery. (With a full moon, of course).

And definitely echolocation for Echoes Of The Bat. Hadn't really thought about the wolf, but tracking by scent sounds good to me.

Alright, now for golems. Before I stat up a sentient flesh golem, I'm going to make a normal flesh golem and a normal iron golem. Complexities for their creation through rituals will be included.

Flesh golem first.

I was having a lot of trouble thinking of a way to make a flesh golem interesting until I thought of Mimic Abilities. Each flesh golem has a few traits from those who had their bodies used to make it. And if more body parts are added to it post-creation, it might just pick up a few traits from those, too.

Flesh Golem (On The Beach)

High Concept: Flesh Golem
Other Aspects: Mindless Servant of X, Made Out Of The Corpses Of Y and Z
Skills:
Good: Fists, Endurance
Fair: Intimidation, Weapons, Might
Average: Alertness, Athletics, Investigation
Powers:
Living Dead [-1]
Mindless [-1] (See custom powers thread)
Inhuman Strength [-2]
Inhuman Toughness [-2]
The Catch (unknown) [+0]
Mimic Abilities + Superior Programming [-4]
Total Refresh Cost:

Refresh Total:

Flesh golems are a type of construct made from several corpses stitched together. Unlike most golems, they can be created using necromancy.

The qualities of a flesh golem vary greatly depending on the corpses used to make it. Average flesh golems are simple servitors, good only for unskilled labour and low-level combat. But when an exceptional corpse is used to make a flesh golem, the resulting golem can possess a great variety of extraordinary abilities.

The creation of a flesh golem generally occurs after a wizard kills a powerful enemy or loses a powerful ally. Knowing that to waste such a potent corpse would be horribly wasteful, the wizard contacts one of the few Council members who specializes in the grey magic of necromancy. The necromancer then buys the corpse and adds it to his collection of preserved bodies, until eventually someone else contacts him looking for a servant with a characteristic that the corpse had in life. Then the necromancer dredges up the body and makes a golem.

The creation of the above golem requires a ritual of complexity 19 before modifications. If the golem was made out of totally unexceptional corpses, it would lack Mimic Abilities + Superior Programming and so it would require only complexity 15.

Skills:
Superb: Might, Endurance
Great: Fists, Weapons

Protect The Master (Endurance): +2 to Endurance defense when the golem's owner is inside it.
Puny Attacks...(Endurance): +1 physical armour when the golem's owner is inside it.

Iron golems are probably the most common type of golem. They're strong, durable, and effective against the fey. But that isn't the main reason for their popularity.

More important than any of the above is the fact that a wizard can hide inside an iron golem when things get ugly. Wizards tend to be fragile and a bit cowardly, so ten thousand pounds of animated metal makes a good place for them to be in a fight. Generally, a group of wizards sits inside the belly of the golem and hurls out evocations while the golem simply walks over all opposition. This strategy makes a good iron golem into the magical equivalent of a tank.

The popularity of the iron golem has led to great variety in their construction. Some of them are humanoid, while others walk on a dozen legs. Some are the size of a man, while others resemble moving buildings. Some are immune to magic, and a few even fly.

The stats given represent the standard model, which can carry up to 10 wizards into battle. It's slow and not all that good at fighting, but it's very strong and ludicrously tough. The complexity required to create it through a ritual is 37 before modifications.

PS: Would be interested in hearing what people think of these golem fluff bits. I'm planning a series of Generic NPCs that might be created by wizards, and I'm debating whether or not to include this sort of flavour text. Thoughts?

Once upon a time, there was a wizard named Warren Warner. He specialized in the creation of flesh golems, and he had a daughter that he loved very much. The two facts might seem unrelated, but things are rarely what they seem.

Two years ago, Warren began work on a flesh golem stronger than any he had ever made before. It had the arms of a samurai, the legs of a great sprinter, the torso of a gorilla, and the head of a crocodile.

Eighteen months ago, Warren's beloved daughter Sandra was killed in a freak accident involving two motorcycles and a quart of shaving cream.

Fortunately, her head remained intact. Warren quickly took that head and attached it to his ultimate flesh golem, so as to resurrect Sandra. He succeeded - mostly.

The new Sandra had most of the old one's memories. There were some differences, in that the new Sandra had a few memories that didn't belong to her.

Oh well. She was mostly the same. She was still just as sweet and lovable as ever, and after a quick ritual to make her body female she was actually quite attractive in a disturbing kind of way.

One might expect Sandra to be filled with angst over her unnatural existence, but she's actually quite happy. There's a lot to be said for having a body that can take out five guys in a fight without any help from you.

It should be noted that Sandra lacks the skills to use the capabilities of her body. She has no idea how to apply its vast strength. And when she fights (which is whenever she feels like showing off), she lets the instincts of her samurai arms take care of everything.

On a related note, Warren is likely to be killed by the Wardens some time in the next month. Sandra doesn't know this, but Warren does. And it's quite a strain on his mental health.

Javier Raith was born to a small sub-branch of House Raith 16 years ago. His parents raised him to be a good lust-vampire, and they very nearly succeeded. He was attractive, strong-willed, hedonistic, and an expert manipulator. Unfortunately, he had a conscience.

So when they told him what it meant to be a Raith, he freaked out. He didn't want to eat people. So he went looking for True Love and a cure for his condition. He thought he found it when he met Cassandra.

But he was doubly disappointed when Cassandra turned out to be A) just a childish crush for him and B) a Red Court Vampire. His disappointment was ameliorated somewhat when Cassandra revealed that she could cure him by infecting him, on the principle that the two forms of vampirism would cancel each other out.

In a fit of gullibility, he accepted infection. And surprise surprise, it didn't cure jack.

So now Javier needs two cures. And both Courts are looking forward to seeing what he turns into. Most think that the way he kills his first victim will determine it. And some are willing to try and test that in an attempt to win the betting pool that Javier's grandmother is holding.

Javier wants no part of this. He just wants to be a normal guy having fun with his friends. He probably won't get his wish.

Fluff text is great.  It's the difference between a character and a pile of numbers and words.  Aspects help some with that, but fluff text is always appreciated.

I just bought the game, but know nothing except what I have read here.  So  I will just tell you her background and see if she will work.

Here is a hopefully brief introduction…..It is a story I have been mulling over for years, boy did I take a hatchet to this story.

Her original name was Bezaliel, a watcher of God tasked with monitoring the course of humanity and she loved it.  She adored the people she watched over.   For millennia she watched and lent a hand whenever she could.  One day she was visited by the Lightbringer who convinced her to join him to rebel against God.  At the battle of the Fall Bez realized her mistake and withdrew from the battle entirely.  Now branded a traitor from both sides, Bez is barred from Heaven and Hell won’t take her.  She wandered the Earth till one day she sensed suffering on a personal level like she has never known, she found the source, a man crucified.  She wept at the sight.  She looked up into the man’s eyes and found him staring back at her.  He said, “My Father’s judgment has been harsh, now be my servant till I return.  Now go forth and sin no more.”

From that moment till now she has strived to protect the weak, especially children, from harm.  From time to time she will get direct orders, from above, in the form of letters slid under her door.  She is now working (a girl’s gotta eat.) as a P.I. her specialty is finding what is lost. Her current name is Amanda Morninglight. She doesn’t like guns she uses her bow or fists, but would rather talk than fight, but she can be hell on wheels if needed..

Template:  Champion of God

Aspects:  Must save the children, On a mission from God,  I’m not just a pretty face.  Hell, they kicked ME out.

Powers:
True Faith (not sure of the powers list here)
Faith Healing

Flight (wings) Wings become intangible until needed

Item of Power:
 Bow of the Heavens
Fires arrows of pure light.  Arrows stuns mortals, but is devastating to undead/evil/magical creatures. Bow is summonable,

Undying

Universal Translator (speaks/reads all human languages)

Knows a little about everything.  (not a Bob, but she lived though a lot.)

Soooo  too much?

I figure Belaziel has enough fluff.

So I'll stick to Hubert Fuller right now.

Hubert Fuller was a mortal police detective until about two years ago. He had always wanted to be like the heroes of the movies and shows that he obsessed over, but real police work wasn't as eventful as the movies made it look.

Then a letter arrived in his mailbox, saying:

"Be advised that your city is likely to be destroyed within three years. If said event comes to pass, roughly 400 000 fatalities will result. You are, to the best of my knowledge, the only person with a good chance of preventing this. So prevent it.

-The Gatekeeper

Now, normally Hubert would have ignored this. But there were a few things about this letter that made it obviously magical. For one thing, it spoke its message out loud in a voice that nobody but Hubert could hear. For another, it turned into a duck when its message was over.

So Hubert felt he had no choice but to obey the letter. Unfortunately, he had no idea where to start. His initial investigations got him turned by a Red Court Vampire, but they didn't produce much information. Fortunately, the Fellowship Of St Giles saved him before he could be fully turned.

Thanks to the fellowship, he's now pretty well clued in. He's also a fairly significant player in the local anti-Red struggles, partly because of his position in the police force. But he still has no idea what was up with the Gatekeeper's letter.

Alright, done.

So, what do people think of these two?

Bethany Maroon had a very odd childhood. Her mother was a unemployed welfare case, and her father was a redcap. They split the job of raising her.

For six months of every year, Bethany lived a fairly normal life with her mother.

For the other six months, she was raised by a redcap warband which brought her along as they wandered Faerie killing things.

Bethany stayed out of their fights, since she lacked the supernatural deadliness of her father. But after every battle, she went to see if there were any valuables to be had on the corpses of the dead. Often there were some, which really helped Bethany and her mother get by.

Living in poverty half the time and with supernatural monsters the other half taught Bethany the importance of money and the fact that, with enough creativity, it was very possible to get a lot of it.

Now Bethany is nineteen, and she's out in the world looking to make her fortune. In this she is accompanied by a young man named Jim, her friend and sort-of boyfriend. (She likes him, but the fact that she looks like an eleven-year-old kid makes her interest a bit creepy for him).

She's got scavenging skills, supernatural durability, and a head full of bizarre schemes. He's got a magical ability to blow stuff up. Together, they're going to get rich or die trying.

Eustace Scuggs is a walking stereotype. His name shows up if you google the word "redneck". He spends his days drinking, hunting, watching TV, and delivering moonshine for his brother.

It's that last pastime that landed him in his current predicament. He was delivering some special moonshine to a man who up and vanished before he arrived. Eustace didn't want the moonshine to go to waste, so he drank it.

34 hours later, Eustace woke up in the form of a Jackalope. This would have been bad enough on its own, but of course it got worse. His nephew (also named Eustace) caught sight of him. Word got around fast, and a hunt started. Eustace Sr. barely managed to escape.

Now Eustace is changing randomly back and forth from human to Jackalope. And he's scared. He's doing everything he can to work out what the hell happened to him without revealing his secret.

But his brother swears that the only special thing about the moonshine was its potency. Eustace has no idea what's going on.

It isn't possible to become a wizard without a healthy dose of inborn talent. But no amount of talent can guarantee wizardry. Aroo Reos is living proof of that.

His mother and father were both wizards of the white council. But in the war with Kemmler they both died and the 5-year-old Aroo was left completely alone.

Aroo would probably have died in a gutter if not for his magical talents. His will to live awakened his magic and he was able to call rats to protect and feed him. And so Aroo was raised by rats.

This turned out to be bad for his mental health. Which, combined with a total lack of real training in magic, lead to the crippling of Aroo's magical talents. His life skills didn't do too well either. Aroo was never able to integrate into normal society. To this day, he lives in a sewer pipe.

But Aroo's actually not so badly off. He is the unquestioned king of the sewers and the rats within them.

And a kingdom of vermin is still a kingdom.

Aroo lives happily among the rats, ruling over them like a god. He has a court of elder rats and a wise familiar/advisor named Ben and an army of rabid vermin. So far as he's concerned, he's living the high life.

You never disappoint, Sancta. Aroo's fantastic for a low-refresh character, and as unique as his Ritual style. When I came up with the idea I was (of course) having some fond memories of the movie Willard (Starring Crispin Glover) and I wondered how viable a Rodentiamancer could be. Aroo perfectly fits into the niche I imagined for him. And with so much room to grow, he could be an oddball powerhouse if advanced to Submerged level.

Thanks kindly.

One thing I wasn't sure about for Aroo was whether or not he should have Wizard's Constitution. If you use him, I recommend you consider giving him that power.
