Title: new gm having trouble with phases
Post by: Theodore Rockwell on August 27, 2011, 07:40:04 PM
I finally got a chance to start up a game of DFRPG but am having a real hard time wrapping my brain around the step in character creation with the guest staring stuff.  Could some one please help me to understand it?

The idea about the 1st adventure and costarring is that the character creation process is a shared experience. Each part of your backstory determines one of your characters aspects.

With the first adventure two other characters in the making co-star, they play a role in that part of the first character's bio. This lets you establish pre-existing relationships and that ties the group together.

What specifically about it are you having a hard time with?

It helps to keep the first story open ended, so someone else can finish it. If you keep the guest star story open ended as well, you can get even more people to co-star in it.

Wow, fast response time.  Ok, that part that is giving the most trouble is the record keeping part actually.  My understanding of it is that on player A's worksheet, he has his story as phase 3, then his role in the story of player B as phase 4 and his role in player C's story as phase 5.  Ok, typing it out it actually makes more sense than when I was trying to explain it.  Funny that.

Not at all. Different learning styles. Some people are the exact opposite, and then there are those who learn by doing.

Yeah.  I still think it would have helped if there had been examples of filled out worksheets for a group.  Would have saved my table from my head.

That's true. I've learned it by building a character in a group, too. The way I approached it at first quickly seemed wrong, so I read the article again with that mistake in mind, and suddenly it made more sense.
