So You Want to Write a Novel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9fc-crEFDw
Required watching.

"I wish I could kill you and get away with it."
I've met people like that guy.
-
I've seen so many authors/editors/agents post that to Twitter. Quite a few of them with Enjorous's comment, too.
-
This was linked on Smart Bitches/Trashy Books a week or so ago--very funny stuff. I said at the time that it reminded me a little of the Dire Straits song Money for Nothing: "That ain't working; that's the way to do it/ Get your money for nothing and your chicks for free..."
-
This.
Is. Awesome.
I want to get an Ipad just so I can take this to conventions when I'm on a panel about writing ;)
-
*snicker*
but it does bring up an interesting point, if publishers are publishing fewer novels, what chance does a new author have?...8P
-
*shrugs* The same chance as anyone else looking to publish for the first time.
-
Yup, it's the old story of out running a bear. You don't have to outrun the bear, just the guy next to you.
-
Well, you have less of a chance since everyone tossed out slush piles, but it's been that way for a while now.
-
I don't get it. What's so funny?
;)
-
wow. I don't even know what to say. It's not the video, its that so many of the comments there and here seem to indicate that this sort of Don-Quixote-inspired future victim of Literary Darwinism is COMMON! :o
-
Lol. I grew out of the "Best Seller Writer" phase in my early teens. I'd like to write a novel but at least I know what it takes to do it now. :P
Added: Oh, and I too have met people like that guy.
-
That was great!
-
That video makes me feel.....guilty.
But it is very humbling for anyone wanting to seriously write.
-
It's humbling, yeah. But if you want to be an author?
Do it anyway. :D

Basic axioms for prospective authors I have figured out over the years-
- Either you have something that will sell, or you don't. There really isn't a lot of middle ground. However, if you do have something that will sell, it may take a while to make it.
- If publishers won't pick you up, and you are dedicated enough to see it hit bookshelves, save up, found your own publishing company and publish it yourself. If you make a decent amount of sales that way, you've got something worthwhile.
- No matter whether you get published right away, or get ten frillion rejection letters, do NOT become a prima dona.
- Flip side of that coin, don't let the snobbery that comes from some corners discourage you, either.
- Listen to valid and constructive criticism, ignore the snark and snottiness. You'll know which critiques have value and which don't by whether they improve your craft, or just tear you down.
- Never be afraid to dream, but also never be afraid to take advice and learn new ways to shape that dream into the words on paper.
