Title: Thorn Manacles
Post by: Mal_Luck on January 20, 2011, 04:26:48 AM
I'm playing in a game wear we use the Thorn Manacles quite often, but I've searched both the RPG books and couldn't find a way on how to run them in game.

So my question is this, how would you run the Thorn Manacles in game?

Side question, do you think the Manacles prevent the practitioner from opening their Sight?

A persistent block vs. calling up energy for magic, I'd say.  Superb at least, possibly Fantastic or higher.

Seems about right. You could also use them as an aspect and then compel it if you wanted something that would just flat prevent them from casting, but I think I like the block better, makes for more opportunity for them to actually overcome them.

I had the idea of them lowering your Conviction when summoning power for magic. Instead of having your +3 to +5, when wearing them you have it at -5 or -10 or something. So, in order to cast a 1 shift spell, it would take 6 to 11 mental stress to do it. It covers the pain when you fail as well, as mental stress or physical backlash.

I emailed Fred and got this response.  :D

My read of the books suggests they're constructed by powerful fairies
or similar, perhaps even feeding on the blood of the wearer... Hmm.
I'd probably treat them like a powerful, portable threshold like
effect, suppressing magic in a similar way.

I think I like Mijrai's idea better. It fits how I read the manacles.

It may be more like a portable Ward than a Threshold, inflicting stress/consequences directly on the manacled spellcaster instead of simply reflecting damage back inside.

I like it more as either a block or a.comparable aspect. In the former, as manacles, they can block almost.anything, almost like a grapple. In the latter, the application is obvious.
