Title: Extending Duration on Thaumaturgy?
Post by: Wilgar on December 25, 2010, 08:37:06 PM
I know that with Evocation, you can extend the number of exchanges an effect will last, even after you have cast it.

Can the same be done with Thaumaturgy.  For example, if I want to top up my wards so they'll last another week, with out going through the whole song and dance of the full ritual?

Check YS265 "Duration and Enhanced Evocation"

Okay, I guess I didn't do a very good job asking my question.  Under "Prolonging Spells" (YS259), it says you can extend the duration of an already active evocation effect.  What I'm asking is, can you do something similar with thaumaturgy?  As an example, say I have a ward on my apartment.  When it's duration is about to run out, do I have to cast the whole thing from scratch again?  Or can I do something like what it has for evocation, just using power for duration, and that's it?

Thaumaturgy requires preperation to cast, and the rules dont say anything about that. Im leaning towards no, because you would have to cast it again to renew it.

Of note a spell that extends an existing thaumaturgic spell sounds like "solving an improbable or impossible problem" to me. ;D

The books are incomplete or wrong in a lot of instances, (IE the senior council is only around mid teens for the refresh according to Our World),  so I would say you could extend thaumaturgy yeah provided its an effect which is active for longer then a few minutes like a Ward.

Extending the duration sounds a lot like what Dresden does when he does maintenance on the wards.  I'd say yes to an anchored spell, maybe no to a more dynamic one.

This is their known powers at the time the RPG was written.  It mentions in Ancient Mai's description onYS100:

These stats are speculation at best. If
anything, we’re underestimating her—maybe by
as much as 10 additional refresh or more.

This would bump her Refresh up to -26 or more!  I assume that this is similar for the other members of the council as well.

Take a look through this thread (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,16552.0.html) over on the resources sub-board.  There are some very solid writeups of various canonical characters that are freaking scary.
