Title: Silly Character Concepts
Post by: bibliophile20 on December 10, 2010, 09:23:28 PM
Just ejecting these from my gray matter.  I can't bring myself to use them any further as they've attracted horrible jokes in the mishmash I call a persona... and I'm afraid that I would be incapable of using them, even as NPCs, with a straight face.

Were-Equine Bartender; likes American beers.  This is unfortunate...

Anyone else got perfectly good character concepts that are unusable due to excessive mirth/really bad puns?

No... not really.

I just had a player who wanted to play a were-something, so he flipped through an animal book... and came up with a were-herring. Or a were-dustmite.  :-X

I have to ask, regarding the herring...

Is the game set in a forested area?  :D

Awesome!!!!

I agree.

Now here's a few more, though less punny...

One of my players has a Scion of Morpheus and is occasionally compelled to help dreamers or rescue people threatened by Morpheus' twin/evil opposite Phobos.  To do this, he has to go into dreams -- essentially, deep into the private realms of the Nevernever.

Whenever he does this, he and anyone he takes with him acquire Avatars -- personas, created by the dreamer for other dreams that are not currently in use.  I vary these WILDLY depending on the target in question.  Most of the time, it's serious and can be rather dark.

For the latest round, it's a child of divorce who was targetted by Phobos because of his juicy fears that HE drove his parents apart and forced his mother to leave.  He's an 11-year-old kid who loves video games and escapist fiction (like Sci-Fi and Fantasy).  So I went quite a bit lighter this time around and just had fun with it...

So the avatars this time around are:
1) The Assassin -- A dark, brooding figure, always stalking in the shadows and rarely seen.  Wears odd armor and prefers to use an arm-mounted crossbow.  It's basically a Fantasy version of Samus Aran, with his mother inside the armor.  She may not be seen, but she's still big in his life.

2) The Warrior -- Huge, powerful, but afraid he won't be able to help.  If you scratch away the powers and descriptions, he's the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz.  And all of his Aspects/stories are re-worked bits from the original books.  ;)

3) The Wizard -- A small, tottering figure with an affinity for fire that draws his power from the Enchanted Meadow...  Again, when you look at his Aspects/stories it's easy enough to piece together that one player is cruising around as a Fire-Wielding Winnie-the-Pooh.  Heck, even his story titles are all book titles from the original series.  (Personal Favorite aspect, shamefully stolen...  "Oh bother, the building's on fire.")

A ridiculously good looking were-cat named Magnum, who works Balls models, hawking Blue Steel cologne.  People call him Le Tigre.

I had an idea for a Wizard who has an affinity for potions and sweets, and one of her Aspects was "Chocolate Awesomesauce"

*delurks*

Odd idea I was kicking around: high concept is "No, Really, I'm a 'Wizzard'!"

Basically, a Minor Talent, with Wizard's Constitution, the Sight, and the discounted Soul Gaze. For added fun, if your GM approves, throw in Mana Static.  Fun additional aspects like "Did I Do That?" and "Laugh in the Face of Danger (Then Hide Until it Goes Away)" make for a Rincewind-like character.

True believer of the Flying spagetti monster.
Thrill-seeking were-lemming.
Mythbust-Omancer. (blows stuff up in weird ways and almost randomly)
Alcho-mancer: Like the caffinomancer from baltimore, but instead of high-caffine, its high-alchohol.

One of the guys in our group wants to play a pure mortal bartender of a supernatural bar that has a haunted refrigerator/ice maker.. that sometimes causes drinks to be ruined.

Kinda silly.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as Silly, but I know that I wouldn't be able to do it without making plenty of jokes based on the inspiration.

My character idea is basically a way for me to sort of copy the Ripple from Parts 1 and 2 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The Ripple is sort of like the "punching pressure points to make people explode" thing in Fist of the North Star, except that it's used against Vampires. And the characters "alter the wavelength of energy their bodies emit to match that of the sun" by altering their breathing pattern. They then punch Vampires and MAKE THEM EXPLODE. In game, the best I've come up with is someone who uses items like the Force Rings, except that they're brass knuckles or something that store sunlight. Really, I just want to punch vampires and make them explode/seriously burn them or whatever.

Still trying to figure out how to make a Stand.

Unless your GM runs without concequences for vampire its going to be hard to one hit explode vampires of any sort you can't store sunlight without being truelly happy so unless you have the aspect truely happy your best bet is a ring of fire (da da da dada).

You could take Holy Touch, and call it something different. That'll let you bypass the catch on Red and Black Courtiers, plus it'll make your attacks Weapon: 1.

You need Righteousness for Holy Touch, though.

I gm for a guy who plays an emissary of an unnamed god of shadows, but for some random reason, he decided that he could not see, hear, taste, or smell, and instead senses shadows around him. I compel this regularly (like when an ogre was breaking into his house and he couldn't hear the banging on the wall, so he had no idea anything was happening)

Given the Oblivion War, you could play some minor god that almost had faded away.  A new comic series comes out featuring him, it's popular enough to stick around, but it changes his nature.  His trouble would be "Bad Writing" and he'd have to take the aspect "Retcon" somewhere.

Edit: Hmm, or his trouble could be Fanfiction.

Oh, the poor, poor fellow.  Hmmm... so, if you escalated as per the optional rule, would the first escalation involve yaoi fanfic, and the second escalation involve a Twilight crossover?  Or maybe the other way around? *evil* ;D

Other aspects could be "Genre-Blindness" or "Wrong Genre Savvy"...

Could be worse;  Fan Fiction as sponsored magic.

Thrill-seeking were-lemming.

Once saw a guy at a convention (Windycon, during the Schaumburg Hyatt years, FYI), dressed up in the most garishly-bright yellow and red quasi-Superman-type suit with a big red "L" on his chest; I asked who he was supposed to be and he proudly puffed out his chest and proclaimed himself as Lemming-Man, the world's first Suicidal Superhero.

A few years later, L-M returned, with a blue posterboard tube hung upon his shoulders, sandwich-board style and decorated to resemble a popular ladies' anti-perspirant; when asked, he disclosed that it was his "Secret" Identity.

This was the same guy who previously appeared in a tuxedo and 4 pairs of handcuffs...1 per wrist and 1 per ankle; his character?

"Bondage...James Bondage"
