Title: Refinement for non human spellcasters
Post by: rickayelm on July 17, 2010, 07:51:59 PM
Are people who gain their spellcasting abilities from non human blood still limited in refinement like a human spellcaster? For example, the scion of a fire god has chanelling(fire), it makes sense that he would never have non fire spellcasting but it doesn't make sense that they would never be able to gain refinement for their fire spellcasting.

The templates are more guidelines than flat out rules.  If it makes sense to let that character have refinements, and the group agrees, let him have refinements.

Indeed, if you think about it, channeling with a refinement is pretty much the same as evocation but only ever using one element. The only bit that needs house ruling is for further refinements to add bonuses because there aren't enough elements for a pyramid.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just buy up to Evocation? It's only -1 Refresh and (by granting two elements and one Specializaion) it's actually better than a level of Refinement.

Well buying a specialisation refinement provides two bonuses and it fits the flavour better (unless he wanted to be the scion of a fire/spirit/air god).

You can also choose to "choose the other elements" at a later date. Buy Evocation (Fire, ?, ?)

I don't know, Earth and Air can fit in with the fire theme pretty well (magma and smoke leap immediately to mind), or you could even go with your own Fire-focused elemental system.

I dig the "one-element elemental system" concept, as an old school D&D player. There used to be over a dozen Elemental planes, all based off variations on the basic four. Just adding fire to the other four options could get you Magma (earth), Smoke or lightning or light (air), Steam or lighting or even napalm (water) and light, heat or even passion/rage (spirit).

True, but to be honest those things are already implied as part of the fire element, even though there is some cross-over with the other elements. For instance lightning is a cross over of both earth and air and so the book specifically states you can create lightning using either element on it's own. In the same way ice at first glance seems to be water magic, however ice can be created using fire magic to draw the heat out of something.

Admittedly, a user of both fire and earth could manipulate magma more, creating molten rock out of thin air rather than heating already existing rock, but I would personally allow the scion of the fire god to do that anyway in the same way as I'd let a water mage create ice out of thin air without knowledge of the fire element. It'd replace his ability to draw heat from objects, assuming a fire-based scion can only add more heat to an object.

As luminos says, it's just a guideline.

Oh and rickayelm, also note that a breathweapon power can be used to create manoeuvres as well as attack, so if you want your character to be able to create fire without taking mental stress that could be an option.
