Title: Has anyone else had a problem...
Post by: Whitestreak on July 02, 2010, 07:54:39 PM
with pages coming loose?

I just had pp. 39-42 come free of the binding, following a page turn.

Not even a complete page turn, either.

However, it's not a tragedy - just a minor annoyance (I've had entire books come apart through prolonged usage.) ::)

Not as of yet. Mine seem fairly durable...though admittedly I've been being nice to them due to their sheer shinyness.

If I were you, I'd flag down one of the Evil Hat folk and mention this to them.

I've passed the word to the Chapeau du Mal himself on this. :D

Zoiks! The binding style we paid for on these should be super durable (smyth sewn). If you've got a defective product, you should definitely contact us via our website and ask for a replacement.

Thanks for the information, Fred.

I'll be contacting Evil Hat in a few minutes.

I took a look, and it seems that the pages I mentioned never got sewn - the fold is clean. :o

Message sent to Evil Hat.

I'm not worried about it, though. I've got the books and I'm reading. ;D

Probably a simple mechanical mistake. We'll fix you up. :)

Isn't it worth more if it is defective because it wasn't finished (as opposed to being defective because it was torn out)?

This could be the one-eyed beanie baby of the DFRPG books.

You know, Evil Hat has consistently impressed me with their good service. I find myself holding other gaming companies up to them in comparison.

Good on you guys.

I've gotten an email from Fred, and replied.

I asked if he wanted me to return the volume, but if it's gonna be the only one with a problem, why in forty or fifty years it may increase in value!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Of course, by then, my currently unborn grandchildren will be responsible for it, most likely.

Went to my FLGS today and saw the only unspoken for copies they have, sitting on the counter (apparently they ordered them for several folks and they're all happy owners now.) :)

I have been hearing disturbing creakings in my binding as well.
For most RPG books the binding would be sufficient (and is typically considered high quality) but when books start exceeding 300 pages they often have unusually high stress loads due to torquing IIRC.  Always had trouble with Champions RPG books as well for that reason.

Similar size / page softcovers will often start shedding pages even sooner due to the glue getting torqued too much.

Yeah, this binding style is supposed to be better at handling torquing stress.

Here's a public thank you to Fred and his Hatroids!

He sent me an email with the tracking number for the replacement for the book which lost the pages.

You guys are so great! ;D

I've only had a similarly great interaction with one other game company (I've had some very crappy ones, though :( )

FWIW, I've had no problem with the binding.  And believe me, I abuse the hell out of a new corebook when I get it.  I stick notes in it, take it hiking with me on the trails near my house, stick it under my arm and haul it around anywhere I might have a free second to read- my World of Darkness corebook from 2005 has most of the back cover missing at this point.   :D

For a book its size, it's held up exceptionally well thus far.  More than happy to pay 50 bucks for something of such high quality.

Sadly, I'm going to have to add myself to the defective bindings list. First char gen session tonight with my shiny new book and one of the pages pulled loose at the top from the binding.

Very sad, just got my pre order on Friday.

The books are so lovely too....breaks my heart.

Just to let you know, the replacements arrived yesterday.

I would have posted then, but I was beat from a long day. ;D
