This may be a strange thing to ask, but I would really love to hear so folks playing TDF:RPG! With all the aspects and tagging and Fate Chips being thrown around, I would love to hear how it's intended to be played. I mean, I have an idea, but I don't feel very confident about it.
Nothing really long, just a scene or something.
I would do it myself (I'm the co-host of the H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast), but I'm not sure how to play this game. I don't have any conventions going on soon and I live out in Yorkshire, UK!
Seeing (or hearing) examples of scenes being played out would really help!
-
I heartily second that request! I would love to hear a session being played out, and I'm sure it would be invaluable to lots of others new to the system.
-
Sounds like it would make a good podcast, much like what WotC did with the PvP guys and Wil Wheaton... hilarious!

Care to share a link? ;D

Not sure on a link. I got them by subscribing to WotC's podcasts in the iTunes store.

DANG! iTunes ... :(
-
You can find them on the WotC webpage for free download. Do a search for PA Webcasts or Wil Wheaton on that site and I bet you'll find 'em.

Hey guys,
The Walking Eye podcast (www.thewalkingeye.com) is going to run about 5 sessions of DFRPG starting next week. We're going to do city/character creation and then probably 3 sessions of play. After that, we'll review the game (I've already played it a bit and I'm pretty sure our review will be a positive one) and then interview some of the designers. We've got Fred Hicks on board (assuming we can make the scheduling work, it is Con Season, after all) and we'll probably interview a 2nd designer as well.
Our first session is next week, so look for it to be released roughly Saturday, the 10th!
-
Great! I subscribed to the cast!

-
I'll be following with great interest!! Always curious top hear/see how people interpret gaming systems and how they use it "in real life".

Is the mentioned cast available now? Can't find it anywhere on the linked site...
-
Unfortunately not. Real Life reared it's head and we haven't had a session since then. But we're on schedule for recording our first session this Wednesday! I'll probably edit it this coming Saturday and put it up.

Excellent. Maybe it'll help me sell the idea of playing the game to a few of my friends. also I get my books on Thursday... perfect timing :P

[anticipatory bump]
-
Just to let you know, we had a last-minute host switcheroo, and had to put things off a week. Things are on for Tuesday, honest! :)
-
Seriously looking forward to this ;D
-
From their twitter: " Ugh, got some bad news last night. The recording of our first session of #DFRPG is totally unusable. Back to the drawing board!"
I don't think the universe wants you to record this episode.
-
Well, much like Harry, we're stubborn bastards. :)
We're trying again next week. We created Anchorage, AK, and it went over really well. Everyone's really excited to play, and City Creation was so much fun it won't be a big deal to try again. We're keeping at it!
Some good news: We talked to Jim, and he's down for being interviewed by us after we finish our AP run and Review. Scheduling permitting, of course, but we'll pretty much bend over backwards to his schedule to make sure it happens, so I don't see that being a problem. The interview should be Jim Butcher and Fred Hicks, it'll be a blast!
-
That would be unbelievably awesome.
-
Hells Bells guys, they've finally gotten their first actual play episode for this game done.
http://www.thewalkingeye.com/?p=905
-
I will see if my gaming group would mind recording it monday. It will be our first session but we're all oldschool RPers even if we haven't played Fate together before.
-
Not DFRPG, but FATE in the form of Starblazer & Spirit Of The Century, and incredibly funny, off-tangent and diversionary at times - the Gutterskypes.
I actually learned a lot listening to these guys, they've some episodes with character creation and its a blast with these guys :)
But thanx a million for the link the DFRPG AP, I've been trying to find one for ages now as well!
-
Listened to the audio; it was pretty interesting. Hopefully our group's city creation will go so smoothly when we try tomorrow night. :)
-
That was good. When is the character creation session getting posted?
<Are we there yet?>
-
I've actually recorded our last three sessions of game so I can go back and write a story out of the game. We're kind of all over the place but I think that's what you get when there's a large group of ADHD friends together. Ours would PROBABLY be tough for people to follow.
-

We're recording character creation tonight! I'm thinking of making a security specialist wizard. Kinda like Harry meets Blackwater, only less evil. Or our Indiana Jones analog. He's tempting too...
-
Ah, really looking forward to that. I listened to your city creation thread and I'm really, really, really looking forward to seeing how ours goes. The part that was the most fascinating was how it bounced from city to city and then it was like DC was the magic moment when everybody went YEAH...
Also enjoyed how the brainstorming led to all those great ideas you guys came up with.
Can't wait to see how the character creation goes :)
-
Chargen session was last night, and the sound file is a-ok. :)
Due to time constraints and a few people being unfamiliar w/ the setting/rules, we limit what we cover in the actual podcast. Which is to say we cover initial character brainstorming, then going through all 5 phases, and we pick templates and powers. We left out skills and tweaking the powers for the spellcasters.
I think the most important parts, namely how we brainstorm our characters and pick aspects are very well covered, though. I'm editing it up tonight, it'll prolly go up this Saturday.
-
Sweet. Looking forward to it :)
-
You can also find our actual play podcast on rpgmp3.com. Search for We Are All Mad Here on the main page (we are listed pretty far down.) We also have City and Char gen complete. We did rattle off our skills and such, but did not debate them much. I think I also mentioned my Rote spells.

Enjoyed your treatment of Austin. Interested to see how your group plays on with only 3 players and with 2 of them being wizards. Are the character sheets posted anywhere to look at? The details all flew by in a blur.
-
I will check if we have the pdf's anywhere. I loved the way Austin came out, my favorite was the electric company angle because it came out of left field but worked so well.
-
That'd be great if you dug them up - I like how the CEO was tied in to the shopkeeper's grandmother :) Not too sure about the magical glowing top hat though...!
-
I chatted witht eh DM, he said he will try to get the pdf's on a website, and when he does, I'll provide the links.
And as for the top hat... well the guy is a bit crazy.. :)

Here is a text version of Red
High Concept: Homeless wizard fighting his way back to sanity
Trouble: I can perceive so much, its unreal.
Do to a mental attack from the past, Red's grasp of reality can be slippery. His refusal to ask for outside help does not help the matter.
Background:
The Strange family was one of the 300 old families that originally settled austin county years ago. Red's father wants John to give up his powers and become normal again, just as he had done. When john is in trouble, his father's people have a habit of showing up with solutions to problems, Too bad the Terms are always so bad.
Aspect: Father's help has strings attached.
Father is old money, always wants to help but only if I do it his way.
Rising Conflict:
Over the years, Red has developed an overactive sense of independence, he has trouble accepting help from all but his closest allies.
Aspect: I can and will do it myself!
As a reaction to his fathers need to control, Red is stubbornly independent.
First Adventure:
When a psychomancer comes to town, Red meets with him head on. But will red succeed when the psychomancer had him as a target all along?
Aspect: We are family
Red considers trusted friends to be more important than family ties, He has developed a small group of friends he can trust, and will do anything for them.
Phase 4
Aspect: Sometimes its so bad, you can smell the crazy.
Might change this one..
Phase 5:
Aspect: Trust me, I'm the good kinda crazy
Invoke example: Red can turn on the charm while acting like an oddball, gathering goodwill because everyone thinks he is a lovable goof.
Compel example: Cops and other persons of authority can be scared by him and often try to push him out from the public eye.
Skills
5) Discipline (lots of skill because he was always good at what he did)
4) Lore (His Lore began to grow after his downfall),Alertness
3) Conviction, Investigation, Contacts
2) Intimidation,Resources (has tons of 'junk' that work fine), Athletics,Raport
1) Presence ,Endurance , Fists, Guns,Deceit
Powers
Evocation
Elements (earth, spirit, fire) Specialization in earth control + 1
Thaumaturgy
Specialization in crafting frequency
The sight
Soulgaze
Wizards constitution
Rote spells:
Buoyancy (Maneuver 4 shifts 3 for effect 1 for duration (whole scene))* This is different from the book, but was told that Fred Hicks says the book example was wrong and maneuvers created by spell act the same as maneuvers created by normal means)
Toss Object (Attack earth 5 vs athletics, picks up a nearby object and tosses it at the target) much like Grasping branches spell example needs nearby object to function.
Gravity overdrive (Earth offensive block, (requires staff) shift 6: 5 for effect, 1 for duration, acts as grapple)
Debris shield (Earth Block, 5 shift for effect)
Magic Items
Evocation Focus Items
Rod +2 power for offensive earth magic
Glove +1 power defensive spirit magic
2 Enchanted Items
Magic top hat: Provides armor 2 2/session (frequency due to Thaumaturgy specialization in frequency)
1 Potion slot:
Power levels with Rod and glove
Offensive Earth Magic Conviction 5 (3+2 from Rod), Discipline 6 (5 + 1 from specialization)
Defensive Spirit Magic Conviction 4 (3+1 from Glove), Discipline 5
All other Off/def magic: Conviction 3, Discipline 5

Actual People, Actual Play just posted up their city creation discussion here on:

They've picked Hollywood (which is pretty damned cool)

Episode 2, character creation is now up at The Walking Eye:
http://www.thewalkingeye.com/?p=919
-
Thanks! And nice timing - something new for me to listen to when I pound out 5km on the running trail later on today :)
Its nice to see/hear some of these actual play episodes now, all of a sudden they seem to be popping up. I'm really looking forward to hearing the actual sessions of play once they get started as well.
-
I'm on the last episode of Walking Eye... it's been good to hear the actual process of city and character creations...
Even the ones that struggle it's good to know about it to help overcome the struggles.
(I've listened to all 6 DFRPG podcasts.)
Thanks for making them!
-
Any plans to publish the character sheets so we can take a look at what you folks have put together?
-
I am enjoying the city creation so far and am forwarding the links to some friends who have expressed an interest in the game.
This is helping me get a better idea of the game by listening to these.
-
I listened to the first episode and I didn't get much out of it. The rules for character and city creation were never very confusing to me, but the use of aspects and fate points in the game are what seemed a little blurry and that is what I was looking to hear more of.
Has any of the Evil Hat guys thought of doing little audio demos for their games? I think it would be really cool to hear from the creators of the game to really get a feel of how it's supposed to be done.

So what podcast did you listen to? And do you have any questions that could help anyone explain what part are you having trouble with?
-
I listend to the first episode of the dresden play session of The Walking Eye podcast. It focused on city creation, which seemed pretty strait forward in the rule book. So I didn't feel like I needed that info. The real info I'm looking for is just seeing how people use aspects and tagging and all of that in play and to see how they are interwoven.
The second episode which I have yet to listen to, says it has more about character creation, which, again, I'm not looking for help with. Just actual play.
I understand they're trying to be completely comprehensive for someone who's totally lost, but that's not me.
-
We recorded the 1st roleplaying session for our group (Guild of Geeks Dresden Files group http://www.rpgmp3.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=65 ) It should be out in a week or so. It all depends upon how quickly our DM can get the files edited and up the rpgmp3.com. He is a very busy fellow so I can't give you a hard and fast rule of when it will be up.
Also you have to realize we are new to the game too, and we are figuring it out as well. I think it would be good to listen to all of the actual play groups available so you can get an idea of how YOU want to do it.

Personally I'm glad the podcasters recorded the city & character creation bits - every group I've heard has had common threads in their city and character creation processes, and one of the things they also have in common are how different they have been - the way ideas come up, or how brainstorms come up with inspired bits and pieces has been, to me, one of the most fascinating parts of the DFRPG experience.
Maybe I'm over-reaching, but the process seems to be a GM's dream - players writing love letters to the GM that scream "THIS IS WHAT I WANT OUT OF MY GAME AND MY CHARACTER", story hooks, adventure seeds, locations, campaign themes... wow. No more creating a world setting in a vacumn.
I'm also shamelessly mining ideas that I'm hearing in these podcasts as adventure seeds & story plots to squirrel away in my back-pocket for my own game.
-
There are also items they've brought up in the sessions which I've been tempted to snag for mine along with the idea of the mystery island from books 10 & 11 (won't spoil for those not there yet). Living on the Gulf Coast, it'd be easy to say there is an island no one remembers out there.

Narrative Control (http://narrativecontrol.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=641115) - episode 49 - has a nifty segment on "The game that inspires a lot of teamwork…. Dresden Files. Partially the fate system but specifically in the “using help” section of Thaumaturgy. This is huge. Adventure worthy!".
Check it out.
[link corrected, thanks for the heads-up!]

We've got our 3rd session, the one that covers regular narrative play, up and running now:
http://www.thewalkingeye.com/?p=933
we cover quite a few of the basics: Some straight rolls, a couple social conflicts, a soulgaze, The Sight, some assessments, and a counterspell. Enjoy!
