we tend to recycle theories as new posters show up and reinvent them, and then one of us olf farts has to explain for the 17th time that Justin is D E D, and the new poster gets a feeling we are ebing unfreindly... may I sugest:
a who is cowl section?
what do the blackcouncil?
who blew up Murphy's car etc?
these are common thread that just get repated over ad infintum.
That was what the "Frequently Asked Questions" section was supposed to be. It just never got off the ground, and folks started posting stuff there that should have gone in the Books/Spoilers sections. We'd welcome any assistance in compiling a list of frequently discussed topics and links to threads where they're discussed.

Yeah, the FAQ area is sort of a hot mess right now. I'm hoping Pris and Mickey can figure out what to do with it, because I'm freaking tapped. :)
-
Seeings as I haven't been in the Spoilers area for awhile, due to my waiting for all the duplicate Changes threads to die off, I'm not sure how much help I'd be (as well as the fact I've only been active on the site for just over a year), but I'm willing.

Understandably so! Go get some quality Evie time!
I'm in the process of sectioning off threads Jim has contributed to and moving them to the FAQ section (maybe there should be a Word of Jim sub-section?), but the effort has been stalled by some ominous deadlines IRL.

Our best defense against duplicate threads is member vigilance. Just link me to both threads and I'll merge them!

Spiffalicious work here. Kudos.

Just let me know when you're done. That's the main hold-up to doing the Big Dead Topic Purge right now. :)
-
maybe there should be a Word of Jim sub-section?
Hmmmm. Well, let's get the stuff over in to the FAQ section first, and sort out Word of Jim stuff later? Or would you rather have that now? And how to segregate spoiler vs. non?

Will do. :)
-
And how to segregate spoiler vs. non?
- Word of Jim
- Word of Jim (spoilers)
Will that do? :D
... sorry, it's late, I'm punchy sleepy, I couldn't help myself. :)

I'm thinking "Loo Tender." :D
And if someone is having a "Jesus, CALL A DOCTOR NOW" situation, they probably shouldn't be posting on the forum.
I've always been alarmed by the number of people, here and elsewhere, who are posting when they should be calling a doctor, vet, preacherman, or exorcist. People hit something outside their experience heap or are just mentallyh overloaded and don't know how deep they're in until someone says "Jesus, CALL A DOCTOR NOW!"
Loo Tender?

See a topic that comes up frequently on the boards? That's what the FAQ is meant for! We'd welcome any assistance in compiling a list of frequently discussed topics and links to threads where they're discussed. Post your suggestions (with links, please!) here.
-
Pris- Would Site support FAQs be welcome, too?
-
Sure!

I should clarify that you shouldn't PM me or email me or whatever with this info. That's what the Threads That Need To Be Joined (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,8793.0.html) sticky is for!
Hmmmm. Well, let's get the stuff over in to the FAQ section first, and sort out Word of Jim stuff later? Or would you rather have that now? And how to segregate spoiler vs. non?
Might be helpful to have it sooner rather than later, so I don't have to move stuff twice. And we shouldn't need a spoiler vs. non designation. The thread subjects themselves will have a [CHANGES SPOILERS] or whatever designation in the subject lines.

Just wondering - will this include threads that have book signing Q&A summaries? They are still the Words of Jim.

Excellent suggestion. Yes, it should.

a sugestion for the spoilers section:
rather then split it on questions, which tend to wander, but split it on antagonist
for example:
the cowl section
the nicodemous section
the mab section
the marcone section
and sticky a WOJ thread at the front on each, containing a short locked list of all WOJ statements about that person; for example, a note under a 'demonreach' would be that the island was injured by the ice age glaciers approx 70,000 years ago...
could be a lot of fun for new members just to browse in, honestly.
I nominate Shecky for the project, as Duck is obviously too untrustworthy ;D
-
Good idea.
I nominate freaking EVERYONE for the project, as it's too big for one person!
-
i know! we can copy the wikipedia entries, as they are definate word of god...
esp fullautosprecious the fourth holy sword
-
help ! help! i have been split!
and my posts still arent longer then my sig!
better get out of here before someone makes peking sauce...

Okay, Mac! I'll give a bit of summary for each.
Is Mac...God? (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,15926.30.html) —A lot of talk of gods/deities in this one.
Who's Mac????????????? (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,3351.0.html) —Looks to be one of the original Mac threads.
Theories on Mac (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,8603.60.html) —More o' the same. One of the first threads I posted in IIRC. ;) Talks about WC connections for a lot of it.
Mac (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,11955.0.html) —White God theory yet again.
Who is Mac (heorot spoilers) (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,6231.15.html) —Norse Pantheon, Merlin, Elvis, Tom Bombadil, etc.
Who is McAnally? (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,991.0.html) —Okay, an earlier one than the other. Typical merlin/deity posits.
McAnally & His Bar (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,915.0.html) —Maybe THE original Mac thread. A lot of talk about Mac being a retired version of Kincaid. Linked to by Priscellie, incidentally, in the Who is McAnally? thread. :D
McAnally and the Accords? (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,6774.0.html) —Specifically about Mac in relation to the Accords, and Neutral Territory.
What About Barkeep? (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,14586.0.html) —Dragon, Merlin, God, Bombadil, the Gatekeeper, God of Beer, Vanilla.
The word of Mac 2.0 (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,16974.0.html) —Norse pantheon, again, vanilla, a god of beer, ex-special-ops guy, white god, Mr. Clean (courtesy of Mickey), van helsing, ex-wizard, Kvothe, Dagda, Cowl, changeling. Oh wait, also proposed Mad = Jim.
Mac's true id (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,17140.0.html) —More Norse. Ex-wizard. Same old, same old.
Who, or what, is Mac? (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,15905.0.html) —Ivy's father, Mister, former Gatekeeper, Hound of Ulster. Jim.
Mac's identity finally revealed (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,15320.0.html) —Bombadil. Aberforth Dumbledore. NSA man. Ex-warden.
Mac (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,14106.0.html) —NSA man, God.
Why did Mac come to Chicago? (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,8843.0.html) —Venatori Umbrorum.
A theory about Mac (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,9363.0.html) —Wizard, changeling, venatori, powers that withered like Mortimer's, former blackstaff, dragon, djinn, agent of god, black cat.
Mac and Ivy Possible stretch --- or is it? (SmF Spoilers) (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,6878.0.html) —Ivy's grandfather. Shepherd Book and the Operative, thank you Priscellie, Shecky. :D
///EDIT///
One more: Is Mac (from McAnally's) the Original Merlin (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,16734.0.html) Same old same old—but in poll format.
Okay, made it through all 87 pages of the Spoilers. These are the major ones. :)

Site Support FAQ:
What are the guidelines on user icon size?
Avatars should be less than 125x125 pixels, with the standard 100x100 being preferable. (LINK) (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,18477.msg833146.html#msg833146)
Why can’t I upload my own user icon?
New members unlock the ability to have a personal user icon at 100 posts. (LINK) (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,16837.0.html)
What are the guidelines on signature size?
It shouldn't be any taller than 5 lines of text, or 75-80 pixels (with the exception of Remember Bob sig icons). (LINK) (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,18477.msg833146.html#msg833146)
How do I post a picture?
You can’t upload a picture directly to the site. First you must upload the picture somewhere on the internet that will allow you to link to it. Then, in the post you’d like to put a picture, you surround the link to that post by the codes [ IMG ] amd [/ IMG ] (without the spaces). Your picture should show up in the thread without a problem.(LINK) (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,14229.0.html)
(I'm sure I could come up with more.)
-
Good idea.
I nominate freaking EVERYONE for the project, as it's too big for one person!
Okay, Mac's down, Amber's on the Support FAQ, whaddya want tackled next? My short list:
Cowl/Kumori
Nicodemus
Justin
Black Council
Marcone
The Swords
-
ohhhh boy:)
i geus my sugestion would be to let it lie rather then spend 60,000 hours searching the various pages of spoilers for info on say cowl;
here would be the
Cowl Section
with the first thread being a stickied, facts only woj thread; no theories or conspriacies allowed, just facts, with sources.
then the rest of the threads allow to run amuck within that heading
-
Ha, no, I just skim for those with the major discussion. The find function comes in handy for finding thread titles—if it comes up in a derailing of a thread, I don't touch it.
-
my thought on breaking up spoilers as it has gotten zilla sized would be 'archive' all the older stuff, set up a new format, and then let folks start new threads. save the poor mods about 6 months of therapy.
;D
-
Honestly I think the "SUBMIT" boards should just go away. Folks have misunderstood and misused the purpose of those boards, as some commenters have noted. I'm fine with keeping the answers sections as is or pruned or transmogrified or whatever Pris wants to do with them. But the questions/submit area is drawing conversation away from other areas of the board where it should be happening. Folks can point us at threads that should be FAQ'd within those existing other areas as it is. Am I wrong?
-
Nope. Honestly, I think you should get to bed and worry about this later today. If you aren't there already. Many thanks for what you've done, Fred.

Hmm. Should an FAQ section simply contain the answers, or should they have the answers AND a link to the actual post where the question is incontrovertibly answered? I know there are a number of people who aren't satisfied with an answer until they can see with their own eyes the WoJ on the subject.
Maybe split up the FAQ by book/character?
Dunno, just woodshedding here.

I think the most rigorous way of writing a FAQ is using footnotes1 for the references.
The organization is trickier though, I think it should go by character with a big disclaimer that the FAQ is a spoiler free section: "Enter at your own peril". I thought about using the spoiler tags for the answers, but sometimes the question itself is a spoiler and then you would have a full darkened FAQ which will serve no purpose.
________
1 footnote example.

Yup, we've seen footnotes. But I don't see how they'd apply to a FAQ in an online forum, unless you intend to hyperlink with the note.
Oh, and hey, Myyrdn Eopia - outstanding work compiling the Cowl/Kumori discussions!

Okay, so if I = thorough, and I = CIA, then, I = CIA = Gov't = Thorough? Does not compute.

I'm in love with this thread, btw. Work is killing me and FAQs were originally my baby (and my ball that was dropped). You all are making me cry! (In a good way.)

Pris, are you OK with me moving the Submit board contents to their respective Spoiler board sections? I'd like a quorum on this one. :)

etc..

Also working on that right now. Slim (William McCoy) and I have had a project in the works since November, and life is now finally allowing us to get most of the grunt work done.
