Title: So, how many of you
Post by: meh on April 15, 2010, 09:24:40 PM
Are about to use an exploding volcano to explain why all air traffic is grounded in your story?

 :D

Not I!  ... That said, an exploding volcano might come in handy in other ways right about now.  *ponder*  Does it have to be in Iceland?

Not at all.   So long as you launch a bunch of material to at least 40Kfeet.

Of course, places like Chile might be quite a bit less plot-useful than California or Italy or the Philippines?

Or Savannah, Georgia.

Or Savannah, Georgia.

Too bad it's on a passive margin, eh?

Maybe a Mexican volcano like El Chichon can do something for you.

as long as its not Yellowstone, that would be bad. thought the idea has merit for an apocalyptic villain.

If you want more detailed information, a friend from another board lives about 15 miles from the eruption.

Right, maybe he can explain something from the news reports.

This:

Quote
If lava flowing from Eyjafjallajokull melts the glaciers that hold down the top of Katla, then Katla could blow its top, pumping gigantic amounts of ash into the atmosphere.

How in the frack is a lava flow from 1618meter Eyjafjallajokull supposed to melt the ice at 1450meter Myrdals Jokull to relieve glacial pressure on Katla?

Is there not a 1000m saddle in between with significant slopes to either side?

Or did the McPaper get it wrong, and the real danger is from an underground magma link?

Or did the McPaper get it wrong, and the real danger is from a pyroclastic flow descending on Katla?

Angus says that the two tend to erupt in sucession, at least they have in the past. No one realy knows why though.

Because Loki is trapped under somewhere in the close vicinity ?

I have no volcanoes in my WiP.  I do however have a key thing in the one next down the pile where a lack of volcanoes is plot-significant.

Thanks for the answer.   Do the locals regard this as 'mostly over'?

I admit, I'm tempted by an interesting world view.

5 Volcanos explode around the same time through out the world, effectively grounding air traffic the world over.

A global Economy with internet speeds, and boat traffic :) I think that could be amusing.

When the little one went off in 1820 it lasted allmost two years.
