Jim and Shannon will be at Fayette First Christian Church in Fayette, MO, on March 4th, 2010, at 7pm.
This year's annual meeting will be held in the sanctuary of the Fayette First Christian Church. The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m., and Jim will be available for book signing afterward. As always, the meeting is free and open to the public. Address for the Fayette First Christian Church is 307 N. Church Street, one block north of the town square. Folks may call the library at 660-248-3348 for more information.
Shannon believes Jim will do his standard Q&A.
-
Any news on the why? Four hours round is a bit much for just a whim. ;)
-
I'm afraid we are missing a crucial name of the meeting. ;D It says annual... Annual what? But it is the closest to me, so would love more details. Wait--in March? I might be insane to travel during the March snowstorms! LOL I'll jump to Shannon's page, maybe she's put more information in there.
-
I found the info on it. :)
New York Times best-selling sci-fi/fantasy author Jim Butcher will be the featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Friends of the Library on March 4 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Fayette First Christian Church. The meeting is open to the public.

cool. thank you!
-
cool. thank you!
I will be there with my wife!
-
Why did it have to be on a Thursday? :(
-
I'll look for you both Milks! Unless another blankety blank blank blizzard moves in. :-)
-
Sweet! Just a hop over from Columbia.
-
My husband and I will be there with our son. ;D We've been planning on going, but in a realistic fashion didn't finalize it until last night. lol
It may be an eight to nine hour road trip, but I'm sure it will be worth it!
-
Gas for an 8 hour road trip: $130.
Food: $40
Book for signing: $30.
The look on Jim's face when he realizes your entire family drove 8 hours to meet him for 37 seconds. Priceless.
-
Darn. A little far from the Bay Area.

Only thing you forgot were the hotel expenses, but that's just about right. :)
I'm exceited. I just have to make sure to remember to pack the book for him to sign.

That WOULD be pretty embarrassing to get out there and forget the book.
Ah hotel rooms, yeah, so 16 hour round trip?

Yep; plus we're going to take our time and have a vacation at the same time. My husband grew up around there and he's also talking about taking me up to Chicago (never been that far north/never been to that big of a city). It's going to be an interesting time.

I'm sure that you'll have a long time of Q&A and your time with Jim and Shannon will be much longer than 37 seconds! You'll have fun! I'll see you there. (Assuming no ugly blizzards scare me away... Dang that Mab!)
-
Uh. Didn't the Catholics go nuts when a boy wizard was ruling the literary world?
And Jim gets to hang out in a church and talk about his fantastical world filled with numerous creatures and concepts antithetical to the Christian faith? I just love things like this. Brilliant.

wrong impression jsp... at Denver's Mile Hi Con I dropped down for the AM communion service and the sermon was based on Molly and the Beads about faith. ;-)
Seriously though guys from the area... The new Americinn and the local B & B don't allow a pet, even in a carrier. :-( Any other hotels in the town? I really don't want to head 10 miles south when I'll be leaving the next morning heading north?
Suggestions?

...I would pay money to hear that sermon.

This is the best I can do, I hope it helps!

Best Westerns are pet friendly.
-
We're staying at the Super 8 in Moberly, but you really don't want to stay there. Its nasty but pet friendly; fair warning. I know its a ways from Fayette (about 40 miles), but we're visiting family.
-
I wanted to head north if I was out of Fayette, but it looks like Boonville. Both the B&B in Fayette and the Americinn suggested I'd find something there. I didn't realize that Iowa was that pet friendly, but I've never had a problem anywhere before. I hate leaving him in a crate in the hotel room 10 miles away....
-
I understand. Its no fun leaving them in a crate while you're away. If it wasn't so cold I would suggest you keep him in your car. But that's more of a punishment.

My wife and I are staying in Springfield tonight and making the rest of the drive up tomorrow morning. I'm actually pretty excited about this. It's the first author talk I've ever been too.

Me too! Only a few more hours to go! (well, over 12, but oh well.)

Who all went? What did Jim talk about? Did Shannon's hair look awesome? The world needs to know!

My husband and I went with our son.
Jim talked about a wide range of things from writing to that something will finally happen with the two swords.
It was a good q&a.
And yes, Shannon's hair looked awesome!
(please excuse the lack of details, we drove back right afterwards and got home about 5 hours ago (4am CST).

I met Milks southern Arkansas (9 hours) with his wife Samantha, who was a sweetheart. He promised photos, but that will probably after he gets home as well. Someone was also there from Tennessee, I was there representing IA It was fun, even though I missed the notice about the dinner with Jim and Shannon. This very small college town pulled out all the stops and Jim seemed to really enjoy himself. They had a sign with Jim's name in lights out front--Xmas lights but it was cute. Parking was problem, which was a great sign of how full it was going to be as I came in.
I think the locals were a little overwhelmed that so many people would come so far and were thrilled with the full turnout. About a third of the people were from the Friends of the Library and the rest were apparently local fans. The questions were from fans with knowledge. Jim's stories that stemmed from questions were fun and the locals really got into it! Even the wonderful woman next to me who hadn't read them yet. She took a lot of photos as well. I might call the library down there and ask if she'll post hers as well.
A warrant for Jim's arrest had been sent last year to entice him to come. Apparently fans from Fayette attending two MO signings last year did a good job convincing Jim, or maybe Shannon to make the trip. The gentleman who introduced Jim, but didn't give his own name I think mentioned it. Half way through the Q&A the local police showed up in uniform. He had a copy of the warrant with a large VOID over the top of it framed to give to Jim. Our favorite author had a riot with it and I know Milks got that photo for sure. Later the key to the city was given to Jim for Bob. I didn't catch the story behind that I'm afraid.
And like all Friends of the Library annual meeting it concluded with tons of home made cookies and ice cream punch.
Finally, Jim donated the Changes book that he read the first two chapters from to the library. I offered a $100 to be allowed to check it out 'overnight' but the MC for the evening wasn't letting it out of his hands.
I'll try to find some time to write some more about the Q&A later and I know that the others will be posting their thoughts as well. Can't wait to see Milks' photos!
Oh and Jim dropped a hint.. 1867. Being in insurance I wonder if it has anything to do with the St Louis earthquake where the rivers ran backwards? The largest earthquake ever known in the US.
-
First 2 chapters?! Sonofa..... >< >< >< >< >< I knew I shoulda took off work and gone dagnabbit. >< Argh!
-
The 1867 Manhattan, Kansas, earthquake was a 5.1 and was the largest to originate in Kansas, but the largest continental-48 earthquake was in 1812 and was estimated at around an 8 - New Madrid, MO. Hmm.
-
Didn't get a lot of pics, but that's because I wanted to record some of the Q&A. But here are the pics I do have:

THat's the quake where the Mississippi River ran backwards for a while.
-
oops my bad on the earthquake....so what else happened in 1867? :-)

It was cool, but they'll be posted right? I think the first is up at least.

Yeah, but I'm impatient for all things Dresden, waiting for Tues feels like agony...

Hi. I'm new to the board, but I was lucky enough to meet Jim in Fayette. Judging from their replies, I met several people on this board as well. I was right behind yeLLow and her family (I played with her little boy's train) and I believe I was next to meg_evonne in the signing line. I got Storm Watch and two party decoration skulls signed (one for me and one for my friend). Glad I thought it might be a byob (bring your own Bob) moment!

Yep, that was me, and just for informational purposes my husband is jonsjava on the boards.
I wish we could have stayed longer, but it had been a long week and we headed home right afterwards.
-
Yeah, I figured you'd want to get on the road. Glad to have met all of you!

HEY welcome! Yes you were and I hope your wife wasn't too disappointed that she had to work that night. Columbia right? Gives her hug from me. Loved your Bob skulls. Stop lurking and do some posting BH
-
She was just happy I got to meet him. Who knows, maybe we'll both get to see him someday. There's always next book release! :D
-
Or maybe she'll head to that Chicago Con in Aug that you go to...sometime when we convince JB to attend? I'd head out for sure! LOL
-
It was nice to meet you, meg_evonne. I took quite a few pictures while I was there and will try to get them posted up by the end of the week. It was a really good meeting. Jim was hilarious and very nice to to talk to. He and Shannon both seemed to be very nice, down-to-earth people.
Keep shooting those EVILBLACKRIFLES, Jim!

For those that are interested, I got to record the first 13 minutes of the Q & A session in Fayette. Its a large file, but its as high of a quality that I could have gotten from my little camera.
You can watch it here: http://zyxyellowxyz.com/index.php?post=bfc74e404df4e6caa9ac715d2bce6679 (http://zyxyellowxyz.com/index.php?post=bfc74e404df4e6caa9ac715d2bce6679)
Or you can download it from (its a total of 669MB) here: http://zyxyellowxyz.com/JBFayetteMo03042010.wmv (http://zyxyellowxyz.com/JBFayetteMo03042010.wmv)
I would have loved to just have recorded him reading the first 2 chapters from Changes, but my batteries didn't have enough of a charge left (and I didn't bring anymore with me) to record it, so a picture and a memory will have to do.
I apologize about the weirdness of the angle(s), the ocasional tipping of the camera, and the fact that I didn't get more. Oh well. I hope everyone enjoys it!

"I'll write a chapter, and then I'll think to myself, 'How can I make the beta readers scream at the end of this chapter?'"
We love you, too, Jim. XD
Thanks, Yellow!

thanks for the post! some nice nuggets of info ;D

That certainly explains a LOT.
*edit* Okay, just tried to watch the video. I got about halfway through before I had to give up. By the way, this is NOT a criticism of you or your camera, Yellow - I have a weird little hearing loss in which my sensitivity to the sound is not low (in fact, I'm MORE sensitive than most people; some high-pitched noises are SCREAMINGLY OMFGTHATBLOWS in my ears), but I simply can't discern what people are saying if it's recorded or otherwise electronically manipulated. This was so close to comprehensibility for me that it was MORE maddening as a result.
About the only thing I made out completely was something about writing things to torture the betas made good books. The bastich. :D
-
I know the compression on the video on the website made it hard to understand, but, if you have the time to wait, you can always download the wmv file and you might be able to understand it better. I guess I can always try to add subtitles to it (although most of those would probably just be the answers and not too many of the questions).

and your wife was the coolest, sweetest thing ever! When Jim had to ask her two or three times what her name was for signing the book and then she got all shy and covered her mouth. It was so sweet. Gives her a hug from me again! AND it was so fantastic that she also had Shannon's book to get signed!
Oh and I remembered a couple other things Jim said. He's working on a short story from Murphy's POV that follows Changes. So what the heck betas DID Jim do to Murphy that he needs to tidy up with a short story? LOL AND he said that he might do some short stories about Harry in high school, reminiscent of Sunnydale. Now that would be a blast!
