Title: the belial.1980 & other NaNoWriMo authors...
Post by: meg_evonne on October 28, 2009, 07:12:42 PM
I hereby declare this the official brain cell revival thread for NaNoWriMo authors.

Please suggest ONE word to be used in the novel. The more unique, the more strange, the more WHAAAHHAAHHA evil the better.  But you only get ONE.  You may go back in and change or modify as often as you wish, but must stop by Oct 31st, midnight.  The writing marathan begins at midnight...   May the hilarity ensue.

..and if the top 10 are not used?  Uhmm.  Depantsing with photos by Nov 30th at 11:59PM?  Hey, they'll all be exhausted and drunk by then anyway, right?  Maybe not, if they are still finishing up.  Make that 1:00AM the morning of Dec 1st instead.  sixty minutes to chug a few back in celebration!

Okay, I am off to find the PERFECT word to befuddle and confuse authors!

Defenestrate.

In a thread from way back when somebody else on this board--I can't remember who--posted this as their favorite word. It's now one of my favorites as well.  :)

This is one of my favorite words, too. Danged if I know why it's so popular! ;)

Oh, by the way. I dug through some old books to find several interesting words, and kept looking until I found one that did not show up on Google. Evil, evil evil.

wait.... you're going to honor MSD's Barry Manilow???  Egads, I guess I would cheat and make a humorous dedication to Barry.  I mean that might be enough to cause the Nano crowd to ditch the whole activity.

I know, my anti Barry is showing.  LOL

Let's see...  I write the words, Barry writes the songs.
I can laugh, I can cry, and I can write a novel, but I can't smile without you, Barry!
Looks like We Made It, but I couldn't have without you Barry!

Okay, I'm barfing now...  seriously!

Good Lord, do we have to use every single one of these?  The only one I think I can even remotely use is defenestrate (and since my protagonist gets thrown down a stairwell, not out a window, I have doubts about this one too.)  Okay, maybe masticate and antiquing can be forced in there somewhere. ;D

Well, that was originally my idea, but the majority of the words are going to look like sore thumbs and an author with a vocabulary hangup.

Anyone wish to change theirs to something out there, but no so out there?

Uhm I couldn't find Gastroturgy anywhere. What is that?
The rest i can figure out since my character has recently become a research librarian of sorts. Most of these words will work I think... just trying to figure out in what context.

Even Nicholas Sparks described a traffic back-up full of old people as looking like the exit line from a Barry Manilow concert. Nobosy said it had to be complimentary!

Can we get "gastroturgy" declared a "not a real word" since it doesn't occur in any dictionary I've consulted?  If we don't know what it means, we can't work it into a story, at least not in any clever way.  I mean, I could always have someone doing a crossword and asking if "gastroturgy" is a real word, but that's no fun. :D

I could tell you right now, it's not a word that's likely to be in any crossword.  If we can't find it in a dictionary, we can't verify it, it doesn't stay.  Plus crosswords don't generally use big words.

I'm keeping mine.

Besides, it should be easy to write a story involving antiquing and Barry Manilow, the theme can be murder-suicide.

Would Nicholas Sparks be a name that a trendy happening with-it person should recognise, then ?

Well, I didn't put it out there, but it seems pretty simple.  Something JB might find handy.  Gastro  (of the stomach) turgy (study of)  as in Taulmaturgy (sp).... So I take this to be the study of using gastric smells to follow someone...   LOL

Several of his books have been adapted into movies, off the top of my head I think Under the Tuscan Sun and The Notebook.

I'd say so. Eldest is a big fan of his. And she adores the movie and the book of "The Notebook".

most definitely!  who wants to study the stomach.  Although hunters and fisherpeople slit the guts to see what fish are biting at etc.  And I never understood that amazing research tool---the cow with a window.  Yes, necessary, but I really didn't need to know that!

I think the best thing that's keeping me going is that I keep telling myself it doesn't have to be good and nobody's going to read it anyway! LOL

Oh hellz yeah. ;D  My first pages are especially painful.  I blather, I ramble, I bumble around the beginning of my story and bounce off the walls a few times before I finally manage to get going.  Normally, I'd still be re-re-re-writing the beginning.  This time, I just left it back there and kept going.  It was a revelation to me!  I didn't know you could do that. I thought, y'know, horrible things would happen.

Of course, I also usually send it out to people to read and this time I'm laughing out loud when people ask if they can read it.  "No," I say.  "I like you, therefore you cannot read it."

It's freeing.
