Throwing that on Babylon 5 seems a bit weird, given Babylon 5 borrowed it from much older material. And a maiden/mother/crone split is ancient, too.

That said, I agree the split was to allow the Lady extensive agency, and the Queen still some, within the human world.
not really, old Woj says that's where he got part of the inspiration. He directly calls out Babylon 5.

Babylon 5 was a well written series and was different at the time because the writer of the series had planned a five year arc for it.  Much of the ground work was set down in the first season, but as I said, sadly JMS had to alter it because he lost his main character.  It caused a lot of controversy at the time because the real reason was kept secret on the request of Michael O'Hare the actor.  After his death it was revealed that he suffered from severe paranoia and schizophrenia, even with medication it was a miracle that he was able to hold on for the full first season.
