In Skin Game Butters was the one with the problems. The only reason Murphy was taking the sword was because of Butters. The only reason Butters was ready for the sword was because he got better.

That may have been how Jim worked it out, but as far as the story itself goes, Murphy didn't secretly bring the Sword and misuse it because of Butters.  She tried to have it both ways, she didn't want to be a Knight, but in her own head she agreed with Harry that a Holy Sword was needed to balance Nic.  In the end she broke the rules because she judged and wanted to execute Nic, thus she broke the Sword and he beat the snot out of her.  Butters had nothing to do with any of that.

Or maybe she just brought the sword along in case a knight would appear. That is not unreasonable knowing how they work. And a knight did appear.

In the story, neither the knights nor the swords seem to be someplace they're not supposed to.

The sword needed to end up at Michael's so that Butters could pick it up and become the knight in SG. Karrin took the sword in case a knight would show up, and one did.

And if you follow that thought, in BG, Sanya and Butters were already in the city, no need for them to go to Mac's in order to get involved in the battle. And yet they ended up at Macs, met Murphy and they get the ones helping Murphy go to Harry in the battle. So.. seems like she had to be there, for some reason.

She was the one with the rocket launcher to take out Svangar.
Currently dealing with a backlog of games.

Molly said it pretty explicitly. I knight will be there, that is how it works.
