Titania's Duty (BG SPoilers)

So I think Mab expects to die and it's Titania's duty to be prepared for it. She's in pain for having to kill her sister. Just as Mab was with Maeve.

An intriguing theory, but what is it based on, really? For that matter, how are the two the same?

If Titania has to be prepared for Mab's death, that is totally not being ready to kill her.

I think instead this is Mab saying 'be properly prepared for the apocalypse, no shirking because you're Summer and I am Winter. And yes we might die' and Titania going 'stop pretending you're the only one who is tough enough'.

Or she was saying that her Knight has the Eye now, so technically that gives Winter more power, so it is up to Summer to keep her in check.  However I think Mab is mistaken if she thinks Harry is going to let her near the Eye.

I don't think that is what she meant. In the conversation with Harry, Mab never indicated that she was going to try to do anything with the Eye.
No, I think the dialogue between the Queens have something to do with the fact that both of them worked together for the same objective. That is probably a trigger for something, and perhaps yes, that something has to do with Mab's death.

I think it's the flicker of pain that gives it away.

It could be a reference to Titania not trying to kill Harry as part of her duty, but the fact that Mab uses future tense suggests something she "expects" to happen.

Pretty much, there's only a few things that could count as Titania's duty and that would cause her emotional pain.
Currently dealing with a backlog of games.

I think so too, especially since Mab warns Harry to kill Molly if she ascends to Winter Queen. (Sounds like a Checkhov's Gun to me.) Mab is foreseeing something which will likely lead to her death, and is getting her plans in order.

The last time both Queens had spoken before now was at Hastings. We don't know exactly what happened there (or maybe I just don't remember), but it's been implied to be very significant. So the Queens meeting at this battle must be significant too... we just don't know how yet. But I have a feeling we will learn eventually...

Mab could be telling Titania to kill her if she gets infected.  She might be the only one who can if it happens any other day that Halloween.

Seems likely that was her intent. But consider that just before that Titania says to Mab "You understand what has happened. What it means." It sounded to me like this event was a milestone. Perhaps a point of no return. I suspect Titania and Mab both know their future (or at least one of the futures). And in this possible future it means that Titania will have to kill Mab. Does that mean Mab will go off the deep end?

Agreed. As for going off the deep end, could be the cause of Mab's death. Seems to be the only thing that warrants a Queens death.

That, and pissing off old enemies!

But why would Mab go crazy? Nemesis is a possibility but I feel it's something else she is expecting. The only reason Titania would do it is because Titania would be fulfilling her duty to mortals and protecting them from Mab. Otherwise why not Mother Winter or Harry or someone? There is a whole list who could do it, some with much higher chances of success.

It's also possible that Titania's duty isn't killing Mab. Could be that they both have to do something painful, a sacrifice of sorts.

It's important to note that this is also the book where they directly bring up that the two aren't talking, back when Mab uses Fix as a proxy to inform Titania because "She's not taking my calls".

She doesn't seem to actually have anything against her sister so... why isn't Titania taking Mab's calls? No, my money is on something happening back in Hastings that meant they were not allowed to see one another. And that having her show up to help fight Ethniu will have Consequences.

Consequences that will, naturally, be all Harry's fault.

It's always Harry's fault.  :P
