It also reminds of a fantasy author, I think it was Rothfuss, listing Moses as one of the archetypal wizards. Depending on the translation, Moses had a staff and Aaron had a rod. Staves and rods were used as symbols of power and authority, probably because of the Bible, in European history. All these things make it fitting that they would be used as instruments of power in a fantasy series.

More straightforwardly for the apocalypse, psalm 23:

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Now Harry is obviously not a very comfortable person to be around, but he's definitely walking through the shadow of death with his rod and staff.
