Publishers
« on: October 31, 2017, 05:37:18 AM »
Two authors in the past year had to change the way they publish their books. Sherilyn Kenyon had to toake back the rights to her last YA book and publish it herself. The publisher kept pushing the date back to release her book. Another author, who has sold millions of books around the world for years, change publishing house all together because of two copy editors tried to change her book. One is mainly a romance author, JD has millions of books and JB knosse SK, maybe he might want to make sure his publisher is still on board with his books or make the copy editor doesn't want to rewite the book. Sorry, just an odd thing I have been thinking about for a while.

This is probably a weird time for publishers, with ebooks and everything being internet based.

They are under a bunch of pressure, but it seems odd that they'd push out a publication date.  It just means more money for them.

Odd.

As in prioritizing the printing?

Wouldn't it make more sense to get it printed and out so that it can sell?

From what I've read previously, they've only got so many printing presses.  They have to balance scheduled books with late books and newly signed authors.  On top of that, they like to balance out blockbusters across the year to keep a steady revenue stream.

I'm honestly surprised they're rolling out the anthology and the new book within three months next year.  Previously it's been said that even if the next Dresden and the next Spires books were finished simultaneously, they'd spread them out by at least six months, for steady revenue and to avoid market saturation.

Wow!

I would totally try to get best selling authors out there as quickly as possible because having a dollar now is worth more than having on later.

But not everyone has the money to buy two books in a short span.  If they released Spires in May, and Desden in June, and folks didn't have the money for both, one or the other might get a delayed purchase.  That would hurt their chances of both premiering on the NYT BS list, which would in turn hurt the word of mouth for the series.

It's smart actually, their using game theory applied to leadership. The infinite game is more important than doing good any one particular day.

I learned that from Data as a kid, but Simon Simek does a fair job explaining it too lol.

When he plays strategema with the grandmaster, he frustrates him because he's not trying to win, he's trying to keep the game in play. it goes deeper than that but that's more or less it's essence.
They're staggering their load so that they float an ok business instead of cashing in a big paycheck and floundering in the down times. Keeping steady streams to pay employee's and property tax/rent well in hand.

Oh, I understand the concept, but it flies in the face of economic theory.  lol

Don't be so sure, Simon Simek was applying it to IPhone vs Droid in his speech on it.

The basic tenant is, "a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow."

I get that someone may not be able to afford both books if you publish them to close together, but .... two different authors, with different, if overlapping fan bases, should put coin in your bank account, where it can earn interest.
