Writing about things from personal experience is a great way to add a feeling of realism to your stories. Unless, as in this case, you are a horror novelist writing a book about murder and cannibalism:

That... is taking research way too far.
EDITED TO ADD: If this didn't come from a fairly reliable news source, I'd think it was the plot for an episode of "Criminal Minds".
