Your strangest lines out of context :D
« on: January 29, 2014, 04:20:54 PM »
Just the other night I penned the following:
"He shouldered the leg, hiked up his skirt, and clumped up the stairs" and it occurred to me that taken out of context of the story it actually sounds kind of odd. Does anyone else have a  line they've written which sounds weird (or makes no sense at all) outside the story it appears in?

I used to know a number of vegetarians from whom "One man's meat is another man's leg" was a fairly common slogan defending their position, and it pleased me mightily to write a character who quoted that in a context of "if you absolutely have to kill someone, don't waste the protein."

(That was the same project where I got to follow "God is dead" with "Long live God." It's a shame that's so pre-9/11 as to be essentially unsellable now; there are a couple of months' polishing work left on it that I've never prioritised getting round to.)

That sounds a bit like, "God is dead; there's a position open," which appears in the recent novelization of Shada.

Most of my coolest lines are old movies lines that I throw in there so very in context to the situation that those who don't notice it just roll right on and anyone who does catches it are left snorting.

I can't think of anything :(

That's how pop-culture references should work, IMESHO; there are few things more annoying than something clearly marked as an obvious reference that you as reader don't get.

Not a written line but an actual one heard at a WorldCon.
"You just try doing that in a wool cape!"

My strangest line is probably this from my story "Not quite Dodge City":

"I am the fastest wandslinger in the territory, and I am the law here."

This little gem from an old story: (frustrated tone) "This is just great! I'm lost, in the city, with a demon who happens to be a porn hound!"
"They have no excuse to be dumb- the library is open to everyone." -my sister

Sometimes when I'm watching/reading tutorials online I can't help but think "Maybe this will help me make some crazy, grand escape someday."

Another candidate i Have is from a short story:

"I woke up dead, and the day just just kept getting worse after that."
