Enchanted items
« on: November 18, 2013, 04:50:36 PM »
Typically, you can do skill replacement items up to your Lore.  You can also boost Power and frequency with crafting foci.

Question:

What if you only have channelling/evocation?

- Can you have a crafting focus item?
- Can you make skill replacement items (since they are the realm of ritual/thaum)?

Well, you can still have items, so you are crafting them. I think crafting is neither evocation nor thaumaturgy, so you can take a focus item on it with one or the other.

Skill replacement are strictly speaking the realm of thaumaturgy and you can only put spells into an item that you can cast yourself. So that wouldn't be allowed, if you only have evocation. However, sometimes if it makes sense or if it is just a cool idea, I would allow someone to create a skill replacement item without having thaumaturgy. But that would be as an exception, not as a clever way to save the refresh you'd have to spend on ritual/thaumaturgy.

There's a little bit of ambiguity here. Here's what Fred Hicks said when someone asked him.

huh.  That's interesting...it makes sense.  Maybe I'll recommend my player take ritual as well...

There's quite a lot of ambiguity, but this is how my group plays it:

If you do not have Thaumaturgy or Ritual (Crafting), you are strictly limited to enchanted items and potions replicating spells you could actually cast.  So ectomancers can have ectomancy items, but not pyromancy.

If you only have Channeling or Evocation (no ritual/thaumaturgy), you may make enchanted items but not potions.

Ritual (Crafting) allows you to make enchanted items replicating any effect of Thaumaturgy or Evocation, but you are unable to perform any other sort of magic other than crafting.

Evocation/Channeling -> Focus Items Only.

Ritual(Theme), where the theme is not Crafting -> Enchanted items within that theme, including Potions. Focus Items.

Thaumaturgy/Ritual(Crafting) -> All kinds of enchanted items. Focus Items.

Is how i run it.

I run it RAW, which means that you can use the slots you gain via Channeling, Ritual, Evocation, Thaumaturgy and Sponsored Magic for Focus items and Enchanted items of any kind.

The Raw does say that enchanted items with channeling or ritual need to be in line with the theme of your channeling or rituals, though.

True, the thematic restriction applies. The most common (as in popular) enchanted items (Block/Armor, Veil/physical camouflage, Skill replacement and Attack) can be justified with pretty much every theme, though.

You sure that's RAW, Magicpockets?

As I recall the books are ambiguous on this issue.

One of my players is a supernatural drugs dealer.  basically lots of potions.  I run all her stuff under rituals and have had no problems so far.

That's what ritual is designed to do.
