stunt or power?
« on: October 17, 2013, 03:31:19 AM »
I have an idea for a stunt/power.

this will modify the wizards touch (ow 222)
"GMs should also call for a Lore roll whenever
the practitioner comes into physical contact
with a supernatural entity passing as a normal
human, or an environment that a potent entity
has recently passed through."

the stunt will allow the wizard to detect supernatural entities
in the same zone as the wizard.

I think that'd be fine as a stunt.

Some GMs will let you roll Lore to sense nearby supernatural presences without a stunt, but for those games without such a GM you could make that a stunt.

Maybe include a small bonus, too, since it's a pretty minor effect.

Yeah, I think it's doable without a stunt--I think The Sight, for instance, already gives a +1 to Lore rolls to detect supernatural stuff, as I recall. Judging from the books, it's just something a wizard can do by concentrating--look at all the times Harry does something like "extend my wizard senses", and he doesn't have such a stunt on his sheet.

this can be loosely interpreted but there is the "in physical contact" part.
meh...
In the novels Harry has to touch somebody to tell. I think if there is a crowd of people
Harry could tell that somebody is supernatural..

Not necessarily--in Blood Rites, for instance, he can sense the Black Court vampire about to jump him and Thomas, but mainly because he was already extending his wizard senses to get a feel for mouse under the seat.

The way I look at it, the "on physical contact" thing is like an Alertness roll--it's something a wizard would spot even when he's not consciously looking for it. The 'extending his senses' thing is more like an Investigation roll, where the wizard stops, concentrates, and searches out for things. Look up The Sight's listing as a power, I believe it talks about this.

The thing I have problems with is the difficulties for determining this kind of thing.  What would you say the difficulty would be for sensing someone is a WCV in disguise?  Is it easier than a regular alertness vs disguise or does it just replace the alertness roll.

Given that Harry had a lot of difficulty telling that Madrigal Raith was even supernatural during Proven Guilty (he got a 'weird' feeling that pinged at his subconscious, but nothing else), I'd go with the WCV having a built in block equal to its Deceit, perhaps with a stunt that gives +2 to Deceit blocks used for hiding your supernatural nature.

Skin-to-skin contact I would just rule as a declaration on the part of the person doing the Lore/Investigation roll.
