Evocation as Zone Borders
« on: February 09, 2013, 04:09:19 AM »
Does casting an evocation block to be a zone border mean you have to halve the shift value like armor? I ask because the zone border thing is listed with the armor option in YS, but at the same time the wording only specifies the armor.

For reference:

Quote
Optionally, instead of block strength, you can
opt to have the effect work as Armor or as a
zone border instead. If you choose the Armor
effect, the armor rating is equal to half (rounded
down) the shifts put into the spell. The advantage
to doing this is that the Armor effect only
ends when the spell duration ends—the armor
survives a bypassing attack.
Compels solve everything!

A strict reading would not have you halve the power.
Even Chaotic Neutral individuals have to apologize sometimes. But at least we don't have to mean it.

I might halve the power anyway, though, if the user wanted to block to stick around after being beaten.

I'm thinking you might use this alternate version as, say, a wall of something or other cast on a doorway that bad guys might shoot/fire through but prevents egress while you run away.  Am I right?
My Purity score: 37.2.  Sad.

I believe that only refers to armor as they don't act the same way normal blocks do. Whereas zone borders are practically the same as blocks

I think it's reasonable not to halve the power, given that A) zone borders, unlike normal shields, work in both directions and B) a border bypassed by crossing it may still stick around, but no longer provides protection.

How a border is passed will generally determine if it impedes the progress of others or not, I don't see a good reason to do that differently for evocation enhanced zone borders. That is, climbing or flying over a border will leave the border there for pursuers, punching through the wall leaves a hole, allowing others to go through without also having to punch a hole in the wall.
