Another chapter down and I'm up to 24,891 words on my third book.

Up to 21k on my Falon Half Blood fantasy novel!

And I just put up a new novella.  One my brother wrote in the main and helped co-author and edit.  Its a 150 page (45K) Akantha novella, entitled Admiral's Lady: Eyes of Ice, Heart of Fire and it shows what happens from Akantha's side of the equation.  Taking place from sometime near the start of book one and terminating around the same time as the events of chapter 25.

Through pass and tighten on first three chapters of #3.  The second one is extremely full, and I am not yet sure I have got it right.

Also, trying to get writing done when continually interrupted by queasy innards is not fun.  And my mother will be here for a couple of weeks and then I am off travcelling again, so this is probably the last serious writing sessing I will get for a month or so.

wow...if word can be trusted my total for 14 chapters is 91,086 words...8O
Out of curiosity, how many pages/words do you all write per chapter?
I'm averaging 13 pages and 6600 words or so per chapter...

I tend towards shorter chapters. An average chapter for me will be about 2,000 words. But with my current WIP, I'm keeping some chapters as short as 1,500.

Falon Half Blood - 30k

With my current work I'm shooting for 2.5k per chapter.  With some of my previous books I tried to keep it around 5k.  But it would dip lower and sometimes go up to 7.5k.  For me chapters revolve around two things.  Where there is a good break in the flow of the story needed, or character transitions and the other factor is how much I can write in a day's work.

It's a matter of pacing as well. Shorter chapters make it feel like the story is moving faster, and keeps an air of tension. Longer ones are better for emotional scenes with a stronger focus on character development. So I adjust my chapter length depending on those, as well.

And of course, yes, sometimes you just spot a natural break and know it's time to change chapters, regardless of length.

32.5k Falon Half Blood!

I'm sure you're doing better with chapter breaks than I am.  I'm still going by feel more often than not.  I have my overall story planned out, the broad strokes as it were.  How my characters get there is not preplanned out on a chapter by chapter basis.  So I just give a general idea at the start of a chapter, try to stay true to it, and try not to foul things up too much.

hahahahah

have fun guys!

My editor on my first and second book hammered home the importance of spotting strong chapter breaks. It's become habit now.

Speaking of which, I'm up to 28,285 words on Book 3.

My manuscript is between 3k and 4.5k per chapter. I'm currently editing and so far I've pretty much re-written everything in the first three chapters  ;D The story is still the same, but the wording wasn't terribly good. I feel like my revised draft (technically draft 3) will be awesome!

In other news, if anyone has time for a short story, venture to http://www.thomasrmanning.com/Short_Stories.html. I wrote an Urban Fantasy short titled "Spell Breaker" there's also an additional story, a sort of barbaric fantasy tale, but there's only one chapter available so far. For fun a friend and I are writing this short together, alternating chapters   :o

Things are going great! I have two beta readers lined up for a read through in early May, then release the book in June!  8)
